What happens here
After excavation, apply a layer of geotextile fabric across the entire prepared area to prevent the aggregate base from mixing with the subsoil and to enhance stability. Then, spread a uniform layer of crushed stone aggregate (such as crushed limestone or granite, typically 3/4 inch minus) to the specified thickness for the patio and walkway base. Using a vibratory plate compactor, compact the aggregate in multiple passes, ensuring a dense and stable foundation. Add additional aggregate in layers, compacting each layer until the desired base height and density are achieved. Regularly check levels and slopes during compaction.
Goal: Create a stable and compacted base for all hardscape elements.
Tools and materials
- Level — Checking the evenness and slope of the compacted base
- Rake — Spreading and leveling the aggregate material
- Vibratory Plate Compactor — Compacting the aggregate base to create a solid foundation
- Crushed Stone Aggregate — Creating the load-bearing foundation for the hardscape
- Geotextile Fabric — Separating the aggregate base from the subsoil and improving stability
