What happens here

To create a suitable environment for planting within the stone-filled raised planter, a geotextile fabric (also commonly known as landscape fabric or filter fabric) must be carefully installed. This fabric is positioned to form a 'cradle' or pocket. Begin by laying the fabric down into the stone fill, extending it along the entire bottom of the intended planting area, and then bringing it up along the inner sides of the planter walls. This setup creates an effective barrier that will contain the planting soil, separating it from the underlying drainage stone, while still allowing water to pass through. Ensure the fabric extends slightly above the anticipated soil level to fully contain the soil.

Goal: Create a distinct pocket for planting soil separate from the drainage stone

Tools and materials

  • Geotextile Fabric — Creating a permeable barrier to contain planting soil within the stone-filled planter
  • Measuring Tape — Measuring the planter's length, width, and depth to ensure adequate fabric coverage
  • Utility Knife — Precisely cutting the geotextile fabric to fit the planter dimensions
