Small Scale Cattle Farming 101 | When is Calving Season? Here's what matters most!

What happens here

The farmer highlights additional benefits of his regenerative and low-impact farming methods. By allowing animals to naturally cycle and calve, he avoids the need for dewormers, as his herd has not been dewormed in four years. He criticizes conventional practices of feeding hay in rings near barns, which often leads to muddy, unsanitary conditions where cows are 'belly deep in their own manure,' necessitating medications. Instead, he uses low-impact machinery, like a bale unroller pulled by an ATV, to distribute hay across the pasture. This prevents soil disturbance, spreads manure naturally, and maintains a clean environment for the animals, reducing health issues.

folks that come to the farm to buy cattle. So, that's just a little bit of the science here. If you're living in Texas, you ain't got to worry about cving in the early early spring. Just know that you're feeding mama cows and you might have to give a little protein supplement and you're going to have to give good high quality hay and you might have to do exactly what we're doing here with low impact machines rolling hay out onto the land so that the cows don't disturb the land and make a big mess and a big mud hole. Driving around right now, you guys driving around this winter. Look at those farms that you're seeing on the side of the road that are feeding these cows in a hay ring all at one spot up next to the barn. It's a mess. It's muddy. They're waiting belly deep in their own manure. And when they're doing that, we're having to give them medications. These cows have not been wormed in 4 years. Four years. No dewormer. They get dependent on that crap and they weigh belly deep in their own manure. And if you're eating in the bathroom, you're going to get sick, right? Just makes sense. Guys, thanks a lot. I hope you learned a little bit. There's a lot of information out here. Uh I hope you'll stick with me on the farm. Be sure you're subscribed. Hit that little bell. It notifies you when I post a new video. And we've got a couple more videos coming here at the end of this one. Stick around, click them, watch them. Let's have some fun.
