What happens here

This video documents the use of a mini-excavator to dig a long trench across a field. While the primary purpose shown is for installing a water line as part of a farm's utility infrastructure, the process involves significant soil excavation that can contribute to preparing the ground for in-ground garden beds by improving deep soil aeration and drainage. The video details operating the excavator, navigating terrain, encountering underground pipes (and accidentally damaging one), and dealing with rocky soil conditions.

I might just let her rip. [laughter] Sometimes that's fun enough. Oh. [clears throat] Oh man. Contact. If this handle right here works the blade. Well, once I put this down. So, you put this guy down and this works the blade. uh push and pull that. There's a uh button on here to tilt the blade this way and that way. So, that helps stabilize me. And the way the bucket works, this raises it up. Okay. This curls my bucket left, right, and then this rotates the machine left to right and brings that arm in and out. There's a thumb on this. There's an auxiliary button right here. And then you hit the thumb with your thumb. Probably see that. And for today, we want to get that thumb out of the way. It doesn't even need to be in the way. I'm going to be looking straight into the sun here. I think the thing to do is just just start digging, man. Just let her rip and see what happens, right? So, I put that shovel in where I think the water uh line is. That's where I think it is. No, got to be better than this. I am not doing a good job. I have got to get proficient at this. I am not doing myself justice at all. Oh, help me Tom Cruz. Okay. Oh, come on. Come on, bro. Do better than this. Okay. Dig. You hear me? I should have hired John to do this. I got it. Here's my pipe. And I hit it. I nailed it right there. Didn't bust it, thank goodness. But, uh, came pretty close. Uh, that'll be fine, though. We can cut it out right there. Oh, yeah. I did bust it right there. Yep. Sure enough did. All right. So, I didn't bust it that way, but I did bust it here. [sighs and gasps] idiot. Well, [sighs] at least it we know it's not going to blast water out at us. Right here we are. Um, so what I got to do is put a T in right here. I'm going to dig back just a little bit now that I know where my pipe is. Uh, I'll come back over here once I get a little more proficient. This is a learning curve. It's not the same as a caterpillar. It's It's just not the same as a Caterpillar excavator and it's killing me. [laughter] It's just killing me. Let's hammer down on this. Got to get this job done. Uh sun's set low and I got to get this trenched all the way to that fence by the end of the day. That's the goal. As you can see, this is not a light-hearted project. This is a pretty major project that I'm working on here. This trench is probably going to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 yards long. I'm going to end up buying a 300T roll of 1 inch poly pipe to connect all this up. I probably didn't need to get 1 in, but that's what I'm going to get anyway. So, we're going from 1 in to an inch and a quarter. I know, I know you plumber guys are rolling your eyes right now, but that's just the way it is here. This well is serviced by a 1- in pipe. And the well that services the farm is set up with an inch and a quarter. So we could irrigate at some point if we wanted to. This is only for backup. Okay? So it's not for fullon irrigation. It's for taking care of the cows. And I actually have the solar well dialed down to only 4 gall per minute. So it will never ever run too low. Now down here at the house, we're going to start digging next. And that's going to be even more of a challenge. So, I've got everything dug all the way back to the inch and a quarter poly for the solar well. And now we're right here where I need to be really precise. And I'm really starting to learn how to run this machine. About the time I get good at it, that's the time I'll be done with this project. Stick around, guys. There'll be a future video. We're going to be putting a hydrant in beside the chicken coupe in the garden. I've been needing to do that for quite some time. So, we're going to go ahead and get that done probably in the next couple of weeks. You can see as I'm digging right here by the cattle handling equipment that I am into some rock. There is a big rock buried in here and I can't seem to get it out. So, I'm going to have to just kind of circumvent my way around this rock. There are a lot of stones buried up here on the Stony Ridge Farm. And right up here where the outdoor kitchen is located, that's the rockiest ridge on the entire farm. That is the Stony Ridge.
