What happens here
After the gravel base and border are set, evenly spread a uniform 1-inch layer of washed concrete sand (also known as screeding sand) over the entire compacted gravel base. Utilize screed rails (such as PVC pipe or metal conduit) and a straightedge (like a 2x4) to meticulously level this sand bed, ensuring it is perfectly consistent in depth and grade. Begin carefully laying the main hexagonal pavers onto this sand bed. The video showcases a checkerboard-like pattern using light and dark hexagonal pavers (specifically Unilock Hexa pavers). Start from one defined corner or edge of the hexagon and systematically work your way across, ensuring all pavers have tight joints. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap each paver into its final position, ensuring it is level and secure within the sand bed.
Goal: Install the main hexagonal pavers in the desired pattern.
Tools and materials
- Level — Checking the levelness of individual pavers and the overall surface
- Paver Splitter/Cutter — Cutting pavers to fit along edges or for complex shapes, although a full hexagonal pattern may not require many cuts
- Rubber Mallet — Tapping pavers to set them firmly into the sand bed
- Screed Rails — Creating a consistent 1-inch sand depth for the setting bed
- Shovel — Spreading sand
- Straightedge — Leveling the sand bed by dragging it across the screed rails
- Wheelbarrow — Transporting sand
- Hexagonal Pavers — Forming the main walking surface of the paver pad
- Washed Concrete Sand — Creating the setting bed on which the pavers are laid
