What happens here
First, carefully lay a layer of geotextile fabric (also known as a weed barrier or landscape fabric) over the entire compacted subgrade. This fabric helps to prevent weed growth and provides additional stability to the base material. Next, spread a uniform layer of gravel or crushed stone, typically 4 to 6 inches thick (materials such as ¾ inch gravel, road base, or paver base are common). Using a plate compactor, thoroughly compact this base material until it is firm and stable. Afterward, install the darker border pavers around the perimeter of the hexagonal shape. These border pavers should be set in a concrete haunch (a triangular concrete fillet on the outside of the paver) to provide a secure and stable edge restraint for the main hexagonal pavers that will be laid later.
Goal: Create a stable, well-draining base and a secure perimeter for the paver pad.
Tools and materials
- Level — Checking the level of the border pavers
- Plate Compactor — Compacting the gravel base
- Rake — Leveling the gravel base
- Rubber Mallet — Tapping pavers into place for leveling
- Shovel — Spreading gravel and concrete
- Trowel — Applying and shaping concrete for the edge restraint
- Wheelbarrow — Transporting gravel and concrete
- Concrete Mix — Setting the border pavers in place for stability
- Dark Pavers Unilock Hexa — Creating the perimeter edge restraint of the paver pad
- Geotextile Fabric — Acting as a weed barrier and stabilizing the subgrade
- Gravel / Crushed Stone — Forming the main structural base of the paver pad
