Simple jigs are the best jigs 🤓
What happens here
To create a custom jig for marking curved lines, start with a wooden block (approximately 2x4 inches in cross-section). First, attach a small, flat metal plate to one end of the wooden block using a DeWalt 20V XR impact driver and two screws, ensuring it's flush with the top and side. Next, measure and mark a specific length on the wooden block using a tape measure and pencil. Use a speed square to draw a precise, straight line across the marked point for a clean cut. Carefully cut the wooden block along this line using a DeWalt circular saw. A hand saw might be necessary to finish any cuts the circular saw cannot reach due to depth limitations or if you need to create a notch. Finally, secure a second, U-shaped metal bracket or another flat metal plate to the newly cut end of the wooden block, again using the DeWalt 20V XR impact driver and screws. This creates a stable guide with distinct ends for tracing.
Goal: Construct a precise wooden jig for tracing curved landscape edges
Tools and materials
- DeWalt 20V XR Impact Driver DeWalt — Driving screws into the wooden block to attach metal components
- DeWalt Circular Saw DeWalt — Making straight cuts on the wooden block
- Hand Saw — Finishing small cuts or creating notches that a circular saw cannot easily reach
- Pencil — Marking cut lines on the wooden block
- Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from sawdust and debris during cutting and drilling
- Screws — Securing the metal plates/brackets to the wooden block
- Small Metal Plates/Brackets — To create stable guiding surfaces on the jig's ends
- Speed Square Husky — Ensuring precise 90-degree lines for cutting the wooden block
- Tape Measure — Measuring the dimensions for the wooden jig
- Wooden Block — The base material for constructing the custom marking jig
