What happens here

This video features a discussion between two individuals about the importance of work-life balance for employees and strategies to prevent burnout in a business setting. One speaker highlights the detrimental effects of working too many days a week, particularly with only one day off, leading to a lack of decompression time and increased stress. The other speaker shares an example of a utility company that successfully implemented a compressed work week (four 12-hour shifts) to give employees three consecutive days off, resulting in higher morale and productivity. The core message emphasizes treating employees well by providing adequate time off to avoid burnout, thereby improving long-term quality and output.

they love knowing that they're going to get up Monday and they're gonna bust their ass Monday Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday and be done with it because it does not matter how many days a week you work because if you're still on you're on that entire time you're never off when you're on Monday even if you only work eight hours use no decompression time there's no downtime hey Sean Macarthy he's the manager of a Lumber Company and he is suffering from the classic burnout I'm gonna tell you guys and gals out there that this is a marathon not a sprint and you have to treat your employees like they're going to be around forever John stopped by because he's feeling that burnout tell us about your work hours I work Monday through Friday on a normal basis and every other Saturday and the point that I want to make is six days on a week one day off is going to lead to burn off and I'm gonna challenge you that when you guys think about that you're running your business you have to give your people at least two days off here's the typical scenario when you give a person two days off a Saturday and a Sunday off they're gonna take Friday night and they're going to decompress they're gonna come down from the job they're going to start to relax and have fun Saturday they're still feeling that decompression but they're starting to come back to life Saturday's their day off Sunday morning they transgress into still feeling the lifting of the burden become Sunday evening they know what's happening Monday and they start to feel the pressure come back on again if you only give a person one day off a week there is no opportunity to decompress at all there is no downtime it's just constant dread when you work six days a week and you have one day off you are going to burn out inevitably almost exponentially faster than if you have two days off a week now I'm gonna challenge you to go be out think a little bit outside the box a friend of mine owns a utility company and he has set his schedule for his guys that they only work four days a week but they work for 12-hour shifts and every single member of that company absolutely loves it because then they have three days off every single week three days they decompress Thursday night the guys love the challenge they love knowing that they're going to get up Monday and they're gonna bust their ass Monday Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday and be done with it because it does not matter how many days a week you work because if you're still on you're on that entire time you're never off when you're on Monday even if you only work eight hours use no decompression time there's no downtime you might as well work 12 if you're on for ten hours it does not matter you're still on when you go home you don't get off until you are completely free from the job and that's the only way you're going to be compressed so if you guys think Al's out there are working your guy six days a week you can say goodbye to it they're not gonna last if you want quality employees you've got to start looking at the changes in their mentalities in their wants and their needs if you want to get rid of these people that are there great for one or two years but then you've got to turn around you've got overhead change you've got your hiring these guys that are burning themselves out thinking that they can do it but then what happens they get married they have kids they have a mortgage they start to realize that life is more than working structure your company to give the guys the ability to enjoy their work but to enjoy their life it's not that they don't want to keep working it's that they don't want to they don't want to live to work it's not the hours it's the days of the week that they put in the faster the burnout comes yes it's the days of the week they gotta have that time to decompress get that into your heads as you're running this business you want to keep guys around you've got to shift the mentality forget about working six days a week forget about working more days put more hours in on a shorter term you're going to be able to get the same amount of hours in but you're going to be able to keep the quality a health long term treat your business like and I think you'll start to notice in the long run yeah you're only working those four or five days a week and people that say come to you and say well I need something done on Friday or Saturday you know what you reschedule you get them you tell them hey look my guys need to time off Monday will get twice as much done in a shorter amount of time because my guys have to energy they have the gumption and they have the willpower to get it done so now I'm going to contradict you Sean right there I don't even give you that excuse to my customer I just say no no the answer to that is no we're off plate it's simple and it's not an out you can do a whole nother topic on the power of the word no ha ha ha god bless you guys love you guys let me go
