Seed Or Sod? Which is better for your yard. Pro-Tips

What happens here

Similar to sod, the best times to lay grass seed are in the spring or fall. However, ground temperature is even more crucial for seed. Use a digital thermometer to check the ground temperature; it must read 50 degrees Fahrenheit or more for proper germination. Laying seed on snow (below 50 degrees Fahrenheit) will likely result in the seed being eaten by birds. Also, be mindful of seed density: too dense seeding is worse than too thin, as overcrowded seeds will compete and kill each other off, leaving brown areas. It's always easier to reseed thin areas than to fix overly dense patches.

Goal: Ensure successful grass seed germination and establishment.
