Rottler Manufacturing: The Unsung Hero of Combustion Engines (100 Years of Made In America)

What happens here

Inside the lobby, the host and Ryan examine an antique Rottler Boring Bar from 1923, which represents the genesis of the company. They discuss the historical context of its use, explaining that in the early 20th century, Model T engines wore out quickly due to rough roads, and engine blocks were often bored while still in the car using this manual tool. They muse about the resourcefulness required to run such a business in early Seattle, which was isolated from major automotive hubs, necessitating local repair solutions.

Goal: Demonstrate Rottler's first product and its historical significance

Tools and materials

  • Ford Model T Engine Block Ford — As a demonstration piece for the boring bar
