What happens here
This project evaluates the performance and usability of the Roto Shovel, an automatic handheld shovel with an auger, across various soil conditions including hard-packed, rocky ground, and garden beds. It compares its effectiveness against a manual tool and highlights design aspects relevant to its practical application in DIY gardening tasks.

(5,741 characters)i don't tell you if a tool is good i you will never hear me tell you if a tool is bad my job is to show you guys just what these tools are capable of and how they actually function in real life now when i contacted the company about the issue i was having with the roto shovel they immediately sent me out a replacement i got it within three days but i'm not really thinking that's that impressive simply because they know who i am and i'm doing a video on their tool and they don't want it to look bad so i can't tell you guys that if you have an issue with your roto shovel that you're gonna get a brand new replacement within three days but let's go check out what they said all right you guys here's the original roto shovel the battery is fully charged it's been on the charger for a while now and let's just see how she's operating so we know how it's been going then once you get it going she takes off then operation manual i really wanted to actually like this tool i was hoping it would turn out to be something that i'd never seen before it's part shovel and part auger and i thought well could this this could be something especially designed for especially useful for older people you know they got like they really don't have the arm strength of leverage and to dig would this do the work for them but the first one they sent me failed really fast [Music] yep battery's full this battery's full [Music] yeah that one's full all right we'll put this one back together and then we will test it out okay got the good one next to the old one [Music] oh crap that's in reverse oh this is the forward reverse button [Music] okay well we know that the defect is in the unit not the battery because this is the old battery takes an hour and a half to charge these up so we're going to get a fresh charge on these to make sure they're completely 100 full then we're going to see how long this one will hold up all right this is hard packed ground it's right off from the side of the driveway so this is where the cars come in and park to get around each other and it's full of rocks it's full of crap i don't know how well this area is going to be for a test ground but if we want to loosen up soil this is the spot to do it so let's just get on it oh this is gonna be but we were hitting rocks on the first one so we're gonna rock them [Music] rocks are the enemy of this thing they are they will stop it dead in its tracks and rightfully so there is not a lot of clearance between the actual shovel part of it and the auger every rock she hits she stops let's go close that's not me doing it it's this as soon as it hits a rock it stops so that's the anti-kickback kicking in right there and this is the rock she kicked out it does a good job of kicking rocks out yeah it'll kick the rocks out but this is called a roto shovel and part of it is a shovel and that means you should be able to just shovel yeah this did this on the first one too okay so pop the battery out i don't feel like getting my fingers crushed tighten it up battery is getting hot to the touch all right all we're getting is rocks i can't get a break i can't find soil without rocks so i can't really give you guys this amazing let's see how well she'll dig performance [Music] but so the guard which also seems to act as the shovel part i think is actually what's holding this tool up i'm going to guess that if we remove that guard and use the tool without the guard in place it wouldn't have anything to catch and bind on and might work more effectively but that's not the way this tool is meant to be used all right now we're in a dedicated garden area there may be rocks may not be rocks but this soil was designed to grow so let's see what happens when we start to use these two we're actually going to compare this tool which is one of my wife's favorites versus the roto shovel i mean i'm going to tell you yeah it cuts off but it is actually pretty easy so on soil that's not too compacted and overly hard you can see how she operates let's see how this thing goes it's not difficult but here's the thing is i'm twisting it i can feel it all through my core not bad but i'm thinking if you're 65 70 years old and you got a bad back or you don't like twisting on your back so if you're gonna plant a garden and you don't need to actually dig a real hole you just need to loosen up a spot to pop a seed in then this might be okay guy even the garden ground is hard up here all right well your call all right you guys this one's your call pass or fail on the roto shovel did it meet your expectations what do you think of how it performed they're not paying me to show you this i'm just showing it to you because i got one sent to me and what i do when people send me tools i don't care if it's milwaukee dewalt makita it don't matter if it's a big company or someone small like rotoshovel all i do is show you guys how the tool performs under normal operations and then typically i gradually amp it up and to show you how it does in extreme operations so you tell me roto shovel pass or fail that's our video for today god bless go get them you guys and one last thing before i let you go when you guys are all done with your roto shovel good or bad and you go to put it back in the case that's how she's gonna fit so long story short you have to pull this off which is no big deal but you've got to loosen up this set screw to pull the safety shroud off this will just come off with the flick of a wrist this part will just link in fact this falls out pretty easily goes back in the case like that but you still have the issue of that safety shroud which technically is the shovel so here it is now you've got just a shovel but it doesn't fit in the case
