Roof Framing Math Made SIMPLE!

What happens here

The project begins with setting the foundation posts for the A-frame roof structure. In this scenario, the roof is being built over an existing deck, which has been designed to support the additional load. For standalone structures, dedicated footings would be required for each post. The video shows installing 6x6 posts into metal base connectors on top of the deck's main beams. Crucially, these posts must be braced in both directions (diagonally) to ensure they remain plumb and stable while measurements are taken and beams are installed.

Goal: Establish stable vertical support for the roof structure.

The most complicated thing about doing any roof structure is figuring out your measurements, your rise, your run, and your pitch. That's something that we're going to get into in a little bit, but we're going to start with our foundation, which is our post. Now, the project that we're talking about, we're building the roof over top of the deck structure. The deck has been designed to handle this load. If you were building this as a standalone structure, you would put each one of those posts onto a dedicated footing. So, we've got a 20 by 20 roof structure that we're building on top of this deck. We're going to have four posts. We're gonna have two at the house and two on the outside. Getting the post installed is very simple. We're going to use a 6x6 base connector on top of our beam on the deck. And then we're going to install that 6x6. And the most important thing here is they're just going to be by themselves at this point. So, we need to brace them. We'll put a brace both ways on these posts to make sure that they don't move and they stay plum as we take our measurements and we install our beams. In this application,
