What happens here

This video introduces a long-term DIY automotive project centered around a 2003 GMC Yukon XL. The project involves acquiring the vehicle, performing an initial assessment, outlining future performance and aesthetic modifications, and addressing immediate mechanical issues. The core philosophy is to push the vehicle's original components to their breaking point before upgrading them to enhance performance and aesthetics.

i just landed in pittsburgh it's all i brought i did not check the bag i just brought like a couple changes of clothes because i'm literally gonna turn and burn drive right back to texas but i'm just waiting for my uncle to come pick me up now oh there he is out there oh my uncle picked me up from the airport back at my grandma's house where my dad grew up this is my uncle's current car he just got it project car is his old one are you ready you ready for this boom it's a 2003 yukon xl and it's not just any yukon xl the original owner of this thing was my dad i grew up riding around in this thing no joke it it got flat-toed behind her motorhome all the stuff is still on it like all the everything's still here exactly how my dad left it my uncle never changed anything he just drove it there was the the og 95 suburban that i was like obsessed with when i was little and my dad got rid of that in 2003 when he bought this i didn't like this thing because it was the one that replaced the one that i liked so i was like you know i didn't hate it but it never really had like a special place with me because it was always the one that got rid of my favorite one he had this 03 207 end of 07 2008 pretty much when he bought a 2008 suburban that 2008 suburban eventually became my pseudo-first car when i got my driver's license and was kind of what you know got ball rolling and all that stuff where i started messing with plasti dip and whatever but when he bought that 08 suburban he sold this one to my uncle who has been driving it since then so for 12 years this has been my uncle's truck he lived in maryland until recently so it didn't see a whole lot of salt i mean it saw it not as much as it would have here but it's not in terrible shape it's not in great shape either it's got some uh it's got some wear and tear i don't even know how many miles are on it honestly i think it's like 150 000. you know we got some branch scuffs and this is the only body rust i've noticed and this wasn't even here a couple years ago last time i remember looking at this thing my dad had this backup camera on there in this like pioneer head unit and my uncle got rid of the head unit because he thought it was annoying but he just left the camera license plate frame so this is straight out of 2003. it's still there i'm gonna leave it there the camera doesn't work but it has to stay there just because it's it's part of the heritage at this point all the wires are still in there this panel here does not match because uh it got dinged somehow my dad had it and he actually painted this in our garage i remember kind of helping him do it i didn't really help him i was watching him and he's like oh it doesn't match because this is lacquer and the regular paints enamel or something it's good enough that you don't really notice it because the only evidence of my dad ever working on a car that i had ever seen him do ever is this panel right here it's not not bad i mean there's a little bit of a little bit of rust right here but it's not really invasive and we're gonna be in texas so it's not gonna get any worse yeah that's uh that's my grandma's avalon she's 92 years old and it hasn't moved in probably a year so that's why it looks like freaking scary back here a little scars here i think he was you know used the wrong side of the snow scraper once or something he told me my uncle did anyway i didn't notice that these had paint matched door handles though that's pretty cool the interior is about identical to elvis same it's actually nicer it's nicer in better shape but it's still pretty dirty he didn't clean anything you can see all the all the brake systems for the flat towing the breakaway system is still here the little rod that would press the brake pedal is right here it would you know clamp onto there you really did not do anything but sign the paperwork from my dad and drive it for 12 years like that's it let's check out the engine bay here we got a little bit of rust up on the up on the hood but that's no big deal that's not too bad oh we'll just you know it's meant whatever yeah i'm thinking uh that l8088 will go right about here and this motor is gonna blow up well first we're gonna blow up the 4l60 and then we're going to blow that motor up and then we'll put good stuff in it and actually make this thing go fast fast it's actually in not terrible shape if you're familiar with vehicles that come from you know like rust belt areas especially western pennsylvania a 2003 to be as clean as this one is for being daily driven by two different people for 17 years it's not bad at all not at all it's got good tires on it the frames surface rust that's totally normal no big deal got them 16s boy i'm just kind of thinking in my head i'd like to make this thing look kind of cool not like a race car but just like cool like if i could just you know snap my fingers do some stuff to it i'd put the the sierra hd bumper on it and with the little grille spacer so it you know has a little like like my my duramax does that style and color match that just like my duramax says color match grille put some new 18 inch wheels on here like the of the newer gmc's you know tint the windows ditch the running boards simple simple stuff you know some some like kind of stockish stock looking tail lights that are leds i think those look nice even just changing the headlights so they aren't yellow anymore would be nice i don't know if i could change the bumper though because all this is still here even a little pull pin i guess things been flapping around for 12 years like that's just hilarious i remember one time uh i was riding in here with my dad was driving and my sister was next to me my mom wasn't there for some reason i don't know where she was we were coming back from somewhere and we hit a deer and i'm sitting here about like this but my head's like down here because i'm maybe like eight years old or something like that and you know it had xm radio back then my dad thought he was funny so he'd like put it on kids bop or radio disney or something and turn the volume all the way up just to bother us well he's up there we can goofing with the radio to make us mad just be funny and then we just tank this deer and i still have the original gmc badge from the grill that cracked that came off of this thing it's in my bedroom just checking it out huh i'm just reminiscing about the time uh my dad hit a deer in this thing oh i still have the original gmc badge from that this is where you had to sit this is where i was sitting when it happened except i was like down here because i was a lot shorter as you can see i tried to clean at least the big heavy stuff out of here see how the squirrels hang out and they uh load their black walnut feasts so how long has it been sitting here for so here's another little little thing that i did i forgot exactly back in the day when the prices went way up for gas i put a lock on the gas cap you know uh when this thing was getting flat towed behind the motorhome once somebody when we camped in a walmart parking lot somebody actually siphoned all the gas out of it because somebody had stolen my valentine one really there yeah and uh in any event um so this you got broken into in this thing too yeah how'd they do that um i think i left it unlocked when my dad had it he got his nav unit and blackberry stuff stolen out of it but they smashed two windows because if you look at it they're uh they don't match each other for something like vaguely remember that and they're always little pieces of glass in the carpet they never seem to go away okay yeah see this one's got the ppg stamp on there yeah and yeah ppg ppg and then the other two are like the original windows the guy who i had working on this thing a little little guy in frederick which was good because he didn't i didn't want to go to the dealer anyway he lost the official key and so because that you know the official one has like a little it's like rubberized whatever [Music] that battery was feeling it [Applause] sounds like a little bit of an exhaust leak [Applause] can you hear that well there's a there's a blower in there i don't think he's happy with the blower all right so we got squirrels they're rolling around like bingo balls this is built in arlington the factory for that is like two miles from the shop i pass it every day i see the the suspension lights probably on because this ride height sensor bar right here yeah it's not connected to anything anymore that would uh that would make a light happen i think it'll make it to texas yeah i mean as you can tell when you first started it up you could sort of hear a bit of a washing machine noise so to speak yeah and after it warms up it goes away you don't hear it anymore it likes running it doesn't like sitting here and getting abused by the squirrels how the squirrels where they would have gained there must be a there's a bunch of them in there there's more down there yeah this is a whole stash whatever you could hear in there flipping around was pretty loud did you show the blower motor off or did it just stop doing it it might wherever it stopped it may have ended up stopping in an area oh yeah there's something there's something wedged in there for sure how'd it go turn on [Music] there we go i feel like i'm just picturing like the lottery going on in there with these freaking things all right hopefully we don't need any air conditioning on the way back luckily the weather's about prime so it shouldn't be a problem [Music] [Applause] seems fine to me i've had essentially the brake lines and fuel lines all been replaced at one point or another but it still feels like if you you punch the brakes you're gonna feel really soft got 199.09 on it should go for like a little thousand mile jaunt just so i can say i did the 200. i'll i'll hit i'll hit 200 on the way back yeah send me a text i will that's that's pretty monumental that big it's a big deal it is this is very interesting there's a lot of a lot of history in here i never drove this thing before i remember riding in it even once my uncle had it at this point it's been his more than has been my dad's or even the one i wrote around him but it was always kind of like just there and it's it's weird now i i can pretty much guarantee that at some point when i was little i wanted out in the garage and hopped up and see this thing and you know wiggled the wheel and like pretended i was driving it and stuff and now we're about to turn into it racing machine what do you think what do you think about all this all this you just listened to what's going through your mind right now i want to know because i'm just 24 hours ago it was not even on my radar to go to pittsburgh and now i just i bought a plane ticket as soon as i got back from the gym how about a flight this morning i'm here and now this is what i'm doing so kind of pumped kind of confused but that's where that's where the good stuff is hear that still makes all kinds of weird noises i swear the 93 suburban i have makes less weird noises than this does well there it is that's the new project plan is uh tomorrow you know get do a paperwork stuff i'm gonna take it back up to my dad's house i'm gonna get some more stuff there like i got like a you know tv and things like that that i want to bring back to texas for my newell that i didn't take with me last time so i'm gonna get that little some more stuff maybe grab some some more parts i got a 4l80 laying around i've and using it but not until we blow up the 460 first that's the plan my kind of mo with this thing is nothing is going to be preventatively replaced before breaks we're going to find out when it breaks how much it takes to break it and why it broke so basically motors just everything to stay the same we're just going to turbo it see what dies first and then once the transmission blows up then we'll upgrade it and once the motor blows up then we'll upgrade it and once the rim blows up then we'll upgrade it that kind of stuff to push the limits of everything that's in there just so you guys can see from a true testing perspective how far this stuff will go that's kind of my plan make sure you hit that subscribe button so you don't miss the future videos especially with me driving it back to texas because i'm planning on making a couple stops at some other youtubers places in between here and there because there's kind of a lot of stuff between pennsylvania and texas so stay tuned for that and following this is a little bit of a bonus footage of my grandma telling the story of her 70s pontiac granville with the 455 when she accidentally jumped it she's not 91 years old and has all kinds of ridiculous stories kind of can't remember him sometimes but i thought this clip was pretty funny yeah remember when the your pontiac granville with the with the big block why don't you tell uh tell that story about what you did with that documentary no i mean i just i just it's and it's a true story always in a hurry i always i was late i was going to be late i had another girl in the car with me and we were going to visit this other girl and then i figured oh wait i gotta hurry up give it some gas and i start going because there wasn't any traffic because it was out in the boonies and going and uh and then faster than i had been going and i went pretty fast and the next thing i know there was a big noise the car the car wasn't was up off the road it was it was up off the road oh and then i had to check and see if my friend was okay because the top of her head went right into the top of the car you got some air is that what happened we said the car was off the ground oh yeah well it was what it happened all so fast it doesn't stay off the ground i don't know you were telling us about it and you're like oh it went off the railroad tracks like the movies that's how you told me about it so you wrecked the granville yeah you totaled the total you only had the car for like a week or something too oh wow what are you bragging no i'm just saying so within she had a car for a week jumped it off the railroad tracks and then you totaled it i don't even think you were in our life when i did you mean i'm your son it might not be in your life it was down i love them you know that i love those big cars it was definitely a road yacht
