Restructuring this deck required a bit of creative framing for the new roof. Done and done!

What happens here

With the marks clearly visible, use a circular saw (e.g., 'DeWalt' brand) to make multiple parallel cuts within the marked notch area. Set the blade depth to the desired depth of the notch. For the deeper cuts or to clean out the waste material between the initial circular saw cuts, switch to a reciprocating saw (e.g., 'DeWalt' brand) to carefully remove the wood. Ensure to wear safety glasses and gloves (e.g., 'Hardy' brand) during this process.

Goal: Create the notch for the post to fit into the deck frame.

Tools and materials

  • Circular Saw DeWalt — Making the initial parallel cuts for the notch
  • Gloves Hardy — Protecting hands from splinters and improving grip
  • Reciprocating Saw DeWalt — Cleaning out the waste material and making deeper cuts in the notch
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from sawdust and debris
  • Treated Lumber — The lumber being notched
