What happens here
This project details the process of transforming a sloped backyard with a collapsed retaining wall into a stable, usable area. It involves using a compact track loader for initial clearing and earthmoving, precise reshaping of the hillside, applying topsoil, and then scarifying the soil. The final steps include seeding the area and installing erosion control blankets and barriers to prevent future erosion, providing a cost-effective and functional alternative to rebuilding a traditional retaining wall.

site where a retaining wall had collapsed it was threatening to take out the wall above it and the house as well our solution on this job site was not rebuilding the retaining wall but instead sculpting the slope so that we could drop the budget down and still save this customer's house and now today we're going to be finishing up this job and we're also gonna be checking out some brand new equipment that we've never seen before so let's get into the day's job [Music] so there's an existing retaining wall on site and it remains there we are going to bury them but before we bury it we're going to remove the top view courses so that those can never get exposed [Music] we brought in 288 cubic yards of dirt to Reece Culp this slump now we're far from done and you're gonna actually see this slop completely put back together by the time work wrapped up with this video series but if we were going to try to rebuild the retaining wall instead of sculpting the slope I'm going to say that the cost would have been about triple what this project was now before we just dive in and re sculpt the person's backyard one of the things I like to ask is how do they use their backyard do they have large gatherings and parties where they need flat space so people can get together now if they wanted to use their backyard and they needed flat space we would have been forced to rebuild a retaining wall but we would have did it actually a lot different than the existing design you see this existing retaining wall was a double terraced wall and this is a way contractors cheap I don't care who you are this is what they do they build terraced retaining walls trying to get away from engineering a big retaining wall and a lot of times what happens is that leads to failure just like you see in here if we were gonna build a retaining wall we would have built a single retaining wall a massive retaining wall in the backyard we would have put it down further on the slope giving space so we could have put geogrid in and giving enough space and save zone between the house and the retaining wall that if we were dead and gone 30 years down the road and they needed to replace that retaining wall they wouldn't have had to do anything special to give back their to do it I'm feelin me feelin me feelin me feelin me big my sale [Music] so once we've got the slope sculpted and all the structural fill soil in then we can shift gears and put the black dirt in but before we want to get that black dirt on that slope we want to get all of our demolition and removals done because once the black dirts in place we don't want to drive over the top of it [Music] a drink alright guys Tim just slapped on the Hydra bucket that's my CMP attachment and it's got a built-in scarifier right in the bucket so as he's back dragging right now what you're actually seeing him do is he's not just grading he's actually scarify in the soil loosening it up and prepping it for seed because that's the next step on this project if he had a regular bucket on right now he wouldn't actually he'd actually be compacting the dirt and actually not making it suitable for seed but he's actually right now doing all of our hand labor with just that one bucket so he can grab the material haul it down here and do it all in one fell swoop yeah it's actually I say it on camera it's actually prepping it for seat at the same time if you tried to do that with a regular bucket you'd be actually flat topping it so the seed wouldn't stick oh no you would be definitely yeah we had it like that before I mean I can back drag and show you if you want like how it just compresses it down right if you were to back-drag you could even scrape it but then you're scraping some off the top and you know then you got to go through and kind of fluff it up with a rake but yes you just literally save Sam a half a day of raking all this yep yeah that's it's gonna be then you just throw your seat down and rake it in and cover it up you know it's gonna be it's it's its weight right now I'm kind of mulching the silkier clay base stuff sandy stuff with the with the black dirt right now spinning it together mixing it up yeah so it goes a little deeper so we don't have a stratification a layering system which is I mean it's a layering so what I'm actually talking about Tim's talking about is he's not getting a layer of black dirt and then the subsoil he's actually getting it all mixed together and that's the that means the roots will grow deeper into that soil that's a it's a bit much better way of doing it because you're gonna have less erosion problems down the road and that's what we want here exactly so that's the problem that we're facing so there's buckets kind of a little bit of a lifesaver isn't it yeah that's pretty cool they keep inventing stuff man no we've been doing this for about 20-something years at least and we haven't invented never invented a you're an inventor keep doing what you're doing it will keep using what you did what you make I need stuff to make life easier oh god yes all right I'm gonna let you go hey guys well let's wrap this one up let's see where these our guys are going we're gonna be seating this one we're gonna be putting blanket on it yeah we're not sodding this slope because it just was out of the customers budget let's be let's be real it's not in their budget it's not in their butt [Music] in behind so with the majority of the work done in the backyard we've got to clean up the path that we use to come in and out before we can get to the next step which is putting down this soil erosion blanket in the backyard and that means making sure that we get all the excess soil in the place that we drove in and out Scarah fied regraded and ready to go because this has to also get restored [Music] but the soil scarify next goes down the seed after we get the seed in place we've got to establish the erosion control blanket over the slope that's what's going to stitch and hold everything together but we don't just lay the erosion fabric out we want to make sure that we do it very specifically so as we roll one roll down we overlap kind of like ship lapping siding and you'll notice we put the rolls down the hill we don't go sideways if you go sideways and you get a big rainstorm what happens is all of your blanket just Slough saan down the hill this way if we get a rain storm the fabric will stay in place and we won't have any bunching this blanket takes a special sod staple well I guess it's not a special staple it's a sod staple they're about three and a half inches thick and you have to place them every two foot on center that's what holds this whole thing together we're gonna walk you through the wrap-up of this job but we're gonna meet with the customer during the midway portion of the job and discuss how we do design-build we're gonna do that in just a minute you'll see you a he's gone heavy on our erosion control here we have two two rows of silt fence there we have this first one and a secondary one they're running along the property line and this would have been a good application for hydroseeding but the homeowner was trying to save some money where they could so we went with the seed and straw mat option and hopefully that'll work pretty well for him we got real heavy on the seed and we went nuts with the staples stapling all this down so shouldn't be going anywhere guys this is our customer and we're actually changing the plan a little bit and what we're gonna be doing is like I was explaining earlier we actually have a little bit kind of a design-build element to everything we get into these things we have a vision but sometimes something else comes up that's actually even a better alternative this on here is a better alternative but I actually wanted to get your take on it are you cool with that or what do you think of it I think it's great because it'll get easier access down to our lower part of our yard here for future work yeah for you guys and we can utilize the artwork right and so originally we were supposed to separate the wall reexpose the wall but then your yard would be separate and that's one of the things that a lot of customers were the first time they meet with them they L they want these tiers not realizing that every time you put in a tier you basically just eliminated using an entire portion of your yard when we're gonna be able to bring that back to life the only downfall to that kids you're gonna we're gonna have a few boulders buried in here but I don't think you know I don't think that's actually structurally that helps keep this slope stabilized but you just lose a few stones that's this for future use perfect and then we're gonna cut this we're gonna fill this here we're gonna add some soil tim is worried about your wall here so we're gonna add a little bit of soil to this one to bring that grade up to stabilize this so that you don't have problems down the road and then yeah if anything else comes up down the road we got our route in and out yep make life a lot easier that's good me perfect so so this is so overall I mean I kinda want to get your take on this we agree we were able to repair your backyard at a fraction of the cost without building retaining walls by doing this well would you do this game plan all over again oh yeah I definitely would because just watching it progress it's like wow look at all this other yard that we're gonna have you spot you know well that doubled your usable space easy can say about bar money is you [Music] I'm very perfect that's that's all I want I want to make sure that you were happy with this with what we did because I mean a lot of times it's hard for a customer to see it ahead of time Tim and I look at it and go oh yeah we're going to do this this this this because we've done it 10 15 20 times before we're referencing other projects and here you guys are blindly trusting oh my god what are we getting into we're spending X amount of dollars we don't really convinced it so at the end of it I always like to see how do you actually feel about it so cool perfect so we got a little bit more work to do so we're gonna we're gonna get into it then we'll walk the site with you get the black dirt down and then the neighbors have all stopped by and they've they've liked it as well so yeah yeah the sweet this guy next door the guy across the street that guy over there number four fescue right okay then you guys can plant whatever in here and you know yeah I have a friend well your horticulturist I have a friend whose fathers a horticulturist and this spring he's going to come in you get a lot more done back here yeah those branches that you to get any bit more sunny and do wildflowers sumac and that would be good too cricket yeah I was that Sun shot that would catch on right through here yeah I'd like to stop that you can take whatever is hanging over your property technically all right we got a plan
