What happens here

Before starting the main construction, clear and level the area where the raised planters or walls will be built. Lay a stable base, typically compacted gravel, and then carefully place the first course (layer) of concrete blocks. Ensure these initial blocks are perfectly level and properly aligned, as they form the foundation for the entire structure. The video begins with this foundational step already completed, showing a ready base of laid blocks, some with visible rebar pins for added stability.

Goal: Establish a stable and level base for the planter walls.

Tools and materials

  • Concrete Blocks — Constructing the walls of the planter
  • Gravel — Creating a stable and well-draining base
  • Long Spirit Level — Checking the levelness of the base and blocks
  • Measuring Tape — Measuring dimensions and ensuring accurate layout
  • Rake — Spreading and leveling base material
  • Rebar Pins — Securing blocks to the ground and adding structural stability
  • Shovel — Excavating and moving soil/gravel
  • String Line — Establishing straight lines for block placement
  • Tamper — Compacting the gravel base for stability
