Bedding, Compacting, and Backfill
At 0:43 in
Pretty much everything in one trench
What happens here
After the conduits are laid, cover them with a layer of fine, sifted sand or gravel, known as bedding material. This layer helps protect the conduits from damage by sharp rocks in the backfill and provides a stable base. Lightly compact this bedding material manually with a hand tamper or using the bucket of the mini excavator carefully, ensuring not to damage the conduits. Then, begin backfilling the trench with the excavated soil, ensuring to remove any large rocks or debris that could puncture or crush the installed utilities. Backfill in layers, typically 6-12 inches at a time, and compact each layer using a plate compactor (as seen at 0:44), hand tamper, or the mini excavator bucket. Proper compaction is essential to prevent future settling of the ground surface.
Goal: Securely bury the utility conduits and restore the ground to its original level.
