Prepping for the worst Blizzard of the Year

What happens here

Access the roof using a secure extension ladder. Carefully shovel the first 3-4 feet of snow from the roof's edge, working cautiously to avoid dislodging any existing ice dams or damaging shingles. The video shows a worker using a long-handled snow shovel to push and pull snow from the roof edge, allowing it to fall onto the ground. This creates a "cold edge" that can prevent further ice dam formation and reduce the weight at the most vulnerable parts of the roof. If possible, clear snow from around chimneys and other roof penetrations.

Goal: Reduce snow load on vulnerable roof areas and prevent new ice dams.

Tools and materials

  • Extension Ladder — Safe access to the roof
  • High-Visibility Clothing — Increasing visibility, especially when working with heavy machinery or in low light
  • Roof Rake — Removing snow from the roof's edge
  • Safety Harness — Providing fall protection while working on the roof
  • Work Boots — Ensuring good traction on slippery roof surfaces
