What happens here
With the compacted base complete, install edge restraints around the perimeter of each patio section. These restraints, typically made of plastic or metal, are crucial for preventing the pavers from shifting laterally and maintaining the integrity of the patio edges. Secure them firmly into the compacted base using spikes. Following this, spread a uniform layer of screeded bedding sand (usually 1 inch thick) over the compacted base. This layer provides a cushion for the pavers and allows for minute adjustments to paver height, ensuring a perfectly level and smooth final surface. Use screed pipes or a straightedge to ensure the sand is uniformly level and sloped for drainage. Do not compact the bedding sand.
Goal: Secure the patio edges and create a smooth, level bedding sand layer for pavers.
Tools and materials
- Bedding Sand N/A — Creating a level and flexible layer for pavers to sit on
- Edge Restraints — Preventing lateral movement of pavers
- Hammer / Mallet — Driving spikes to secure edge restraints
- Level — Checking the levelness and slope of the screeded sand
- Screed Board / Pipe N/A — Achieving a uniform thickness of bedding sand
- Spikes — Securing edge restraints into the base
