What happens here
Once the foundational structures (retaining walls, steps) for the different patio levels are in place, apply a substantial layer of compacted granular base material to the main patio areas. This material is typically crushed gravel (e.g., limestone, granite) and is critical for drainage and providing a stable, non-shifting foundation for the pavers. Spread the gravel evenly across the excavated area in lifts (layers) of 2 to 4 inches at a time. After spreading each lift, thoroughly compact it using a heavy-duty plate compactor. Repeat this process until the desired base depth is achieved, which can range from 6 to 12 inches or more, depending on soil conditions and anticipated traffic. Ensure the entire base maintains the designed slight slope (1-2%) for drainage. The video prominently displays a worker using a plate compactor on a freshly laid gravel base.
Goal: Create a stable and properly graded compacted gravel base for the paver patio.

- Level — Verifying the slope of the base
- Plate Compactor — Compacting the gravel base for maximum density and stability
- Rake — Spreading gravel evenly
- Shovel — Moving and distributing gravel
- String Line — Checking and maintaining proper grade and slope
- Wheelbarrow — Transporting gravel from delivery pile to patio area
