Lay Subsequent Courses and Install Geo Grid

PART 2: How to build a 2-tier retaining wall. #hardscape #retainingwall #howto
What happens here
After backfilling with drainage stone, continue the construction by laying additional courses of retaining wall blocks. For a two-tier retaining wall, geo grid is essential for structural reinforcement. The video instructs to install geo grid either after the second or third course. To do this, roll out the geo grid directly behind the newly laid course of blocks, extending it horizontally into the backfill area. The geo grid creates a reinforced soil mass, effectively making the wall and the backfill act as a single, more stable unit. It is crucial to roll out the geo grid *before* placing the subsequent course of blocks on top of it, ensuring it is properly sandwiched between the block layers and the backfill. This significantly increases the wall's resistance to overturning and sliding.
Goal: Build up the wall courses and reinforce it with geo grid for enhanced stability.
Tools and materials
- Geo Grid — Reinforcing the soil mass behind the wall, adding structural integrity
- Level — Ensuring each subsequent course of blocks remains level
- Rake — Spreading and leveling backfill stone
- Retaining Wall Blocks — Forming the subsequent layers of the wall structure
- Rubber Mallet — Adjusting the position of blocks
- Shovel — Backfilling with drainage stone over the geo grid
- Utility Knife — Cutting the geo grid to the required length
- Drainage Stone — Backfilling over the geo grid and behind subsequent courses
