PART 2: How to build a 2-tier retaining wall. #hardscape #retainingwall #howto
What happens here
Once the first base course of retaining wall blocks is securely in place, install a perforated drain pipe immediately behind it. This drain pipe, often referred to as a French drain, is critical for managing hydrostatic pressure. It will collect any moisture that seeps down behind the wall, providing a 'relief point' for the water to exit elsewhere, preventing it from building up and pushing against the wall, which could lead to structural damage or failure.
Goal: Establish an effective drainage system behind the first course of the retaining wall.
Tools and materials
- Perforated Drain Pipe — Collecting and diverting water away from the retaining wall
- Shovel — Creating a shallow trench for the drain pipe
- Pipe Sock — Wrapping the drain pipe to prevent soil and fine sediment from clogging its perforations
