Painting Brick White Fast and Easy!

[Applause] [Music] this christy idaho peter here on paint life tv i'm going to try to answer a question here in this video uh what to paint or stain your brick with now i get this question quite a bit across my entire social media platform what do i paint my brick with and i'll be just talking about brick i'm not going to be talking about wood stone or anything else now um it's kind of interesting question because i never paint brick and so i always stain brick there's a difference between paints and stains and what's interesting is you can get a stain a lot of people think of stains as being semi-transparent stains can be completely opaque so what's common and popular now as people with red brick want their brick to be white people want brick white brick fireplaces people want their red brick outside on the outside of the house to be um also white so there are stains i have stains that you can make completely opaque and they look like a paint but they still keep the natural look of the stone which uh paint does not and so a stain you can um the stain i use solid colors soft color stain from h and c you can tend to any color you want just like you can tend to paint um you're on it's unlimited what colors you can choose from and a solid color stain actually absorbs into the brick into the brick and colors it opaquely where a paint on the other hand creates a film over the top of the brick and what that film does is kind of eliminate some of the profile of the brick and the look of the brick and the natural look to it so stains are going to make it still look unnatural but it's going to be a solid color a paint is going to take away a lot of that natural look typically a paint you're going to have to prime it first and then paint it so it's going to be a two-step process a stain is a one-step process very simple and easy to do and when we're staining our brick we're spraying it on to get it on fast and quickly and then we're back brushing and back rolling to really push it into the pores and get it in deep so it's um colored opaque um what uh color opaque you know 100 are you enjoying the video so far are you finding it helpful hit the subscribe button you know staining or or coloring your brick or stone when you're getting ready to do it if you think about the house and how much paint and you start doing some calculations up how much stain you're going to use i keep using the terminology paint but it's stained you're probably going to use three times more than what you think because the brick itself has all these infinite pins pin holes angles and stuff and you gotta you gotta spray it and back brush it from multiple different angles probably five or six different angles so it's going to take quite a bit of product to get it um the color that you actually want if you're going from what red to white or whatever color you're doing that color change you know just go into it knowing you're going to use a lot more than you would just like on um if you compare it to the siding of your house so do you want to just say one thing about you know stains versus paints now stains absorb into the brick and they are self-priming you don't have to use a primer and that's a big benefit when it comes to self-priming paints i don't believe there is such a thing as a self-priming paint but stains are self-priming and they are very effective they are gonna make your brick and stone uh look more natural looking a paint you're gonna have to prime it so you're gonna be putting multiple coats of primer and paint on it and you're gonna get a lot of build to it it's just not gonna have that natural look to it and because the stain absorbs into the the stone or into the brick and a paint creates a film over the top of the brick you know over the years you're more likely to get peeling with a paint than you are with a stain and a stain you know it is going to take multiple coats but only enough to just get that opaque color to it and and get the look that you want so if you're asking my opinion should you paint or stain you know or what should you paint you know your brick or stone with i've had a lot of success with um h c solid color stain there's solid color stains out there like wood scapes that i've used over the years arbor coat is a solid color stain from benjamin moore that's absolutely amazing that i did a review on you can go check out that video and that's a very effective self-priming product just check out the tds whatever solid color you're stain you're using look at the tds make sure you can use it on brick make sure it's a self priming product and and then away you go you're going to have the brick and the look that you want if you use a solid color stain if you've got any tips or tricks when it comes to uh
