Do you need to lube your sprayer? airless pump repair.

this christy idaho painter here on paint live tv i'm going to give you a couple tips today when it comes to airless sprayers how to keep your gun operating smoothly on a daily basis and another tip lubing your sprayers something that some people have not even heard of it's amazing how many people don't know you need to lube your sprayers so you don't have to repack them as often so if you want a couple tips running your sprayers keeping your guns operating smooth smooth smoothly stay tuned for this video [Applause] [Music] all right the first thing i want to talk about is lubing your sprayers now it's amazing to me how many people i don't even know you need to lube your sprayers so most airless sprayers out there do take some type of lubrication to lower lubricate the piston in it so you don't have to repack it as often and repacking can be expensive so you want to lube your sprayers a lot of do-it-yourself sprayers that you can get at the big box stores don't take lubric lubrication because they're not professional spares once they uh discontinue working they're no longer rebuildable and so they don't take lubrication and they don't last very long all right so i got two titan sprayers in front of me titan when it comes to lubricating your sprayers they have a lubrication called a piston loop very simple easy to use lubrication right here you definitely want to look at the manufacturer of the sprayer that you're using use a lubrication that goes with that sprayer graco has what we call tsl throat seal liquid now there is a difference between these like it's liquid so if you have a titan sprayer you definitely want to use titan's lubrication if you have a graco sprayer you want to use graco sprayer or graco's lubrication and kind of like um with other sprayers use the lubrication that comes with the sprayer itself so one question i do get is can i use graco's tsl in my titan or can i use titan piston lube in my graco sprayer and i know i have talked to the graco engineers and you can use titan lubrication in graco sprayers they don't recommend it they say it's not going to ruin the packings i haven't talked to titan about using graco tsl and titans units i have heard some painters say that they you just they just use mineral oil now these lubrications are typically a mineral oil base but there are some additives in some of them like graco has some other additives besides just mineral oil so i wouldn't recommend just using mineral oil i would use the oil that goes along with your um pump itself like tritech has their lubrication that goes with the tritech sprayer and vice versa so you know worst comes the worst don't just stick anything down in there get the lubrication that actually goes with your sprayer now different sprayers have different methods of lubrication we're going to show you how to lubricate these two small pumps right here so this is a titan 440i which doesn't have any type of auto lube features on it it just has a port right here that you just dump the amount of lubrication in there now you have no idea how much lubrication is going down into the packings in that piston area there is kind of a reservoir right there if you do start to overfill it it's going to spill out and run down um your manifold right down here it's just going to run down the face of this um right down there it's not going to cause any damage or anything it will if you're taking it inside a customer's house it's eventually going to get dripped um drip on the floor and stuff like that all it takes is just a little bit just a squirt of it just drop it down in there and that's going to lubricate your package you should be doing this yo just about every time you use a sprayer depending on how much you're squirting in there just take a little bit of just a little bit of lubrication in there a titan 440 impact has a reservoir right here you can take up this cap right here and there is a reservoir that houses your liquid so you don't have to go grab your lubrication and fill a port you just dump some right in here you're going to fill this thing up right here it does have a sight glass on this side right here and i can i can never really see that sight glass and see if it's full or not i just look down inside and i'm going to get it right to the top now it's full this reservoir houses quite a bit of the oil it doesn't hold a full um bottle of it but now all i got to do is just a couple squirts i've noticed you know just um two squirts every time i use it it's gonna keep it um lubricated if you do too many squirts once again the reservoir down here is gonna overfill it's gonna come down the face of this manifold just grab yourself a rag and wipe it off that's how you lubricate your sprayers once again it's very important that you do it you do have a piston that's moving up and down in there it's got packings on that piston and that lubricate that lubrication lubricates the packings so they don't have to be repacked as often if you don't lubricate your pump you're going to have to repack it way sooner than if you lubricated it i know once uh one painter that i talked to he had a titan 440i for three years he had no idea you even needed to lubricate it didn't even know what that was right there and it was three years old and um still hadn't needed to be repacked which is to me is absolutely amazing but why risk it take and lubricate it to keep that thing you know operating smoothly some sprayers have a like graco sprayers have you know um a protective cover that snaps forward and you just and you're you can actually see the piston and you're just going to squirt the liquid the tsl on that piston put the tip of this on it and run it down there until the reservoir is full and then it's lubricated once again if you overfill it it kind of just makes a mess but it's not going to really harm or hurt anything because they're usually just mineral based mineral oil based lubrications now how do i lubricate my guns so you know they stay functioning properly i hear a lot of people saying you know when i'm releasing the trigger paint's still coming out or the trigger is sticking and paint still coming out i've actually had graco contractor guns and pulled the trigger before uh released the trigger and paint was just shooting now the trigger would not stop and at that point in time you know i realized lubricating my guns would help resolve that problem at the end of the day i always lubricate my guns to keep them functioning properly but then also to keep the paint from sticking to them it makes them easier to clean i keep wd-40 in my vehicle right here at the end of the day i always tie my sprayers up just like this i have just this is just electrical wire i like to wrap on the sprayer so it holds my um holds my hose you know rolled up and i keep it right tight to the handle and then i keep my gun in an upright position right there and then i'll set this in my vehicle and then i'll lubricate it and once again the wd-40 is what i use i like lubricating the threads right here of my gun because if any paint gets on those threads what that does is it keeps paint from building up on the threads or if paint gets on it it makes it a lot easier to clean there are on little guides rods right here i like to lubricate that and the um wd-40 is going to work down inside those rods and then i like to you know squeeze the trigger open it up and then in the opening of your diffuser right here i like to put some wd-40 down inside there because there is a seat a ball and a seat there and if any paint gets built up on that crow or any type of crows or anything sticks on there it's going to cause your gun to leak so i like to put wd-40 down inside there you can just put wd-40 on other parts of the gun like on the trigger and stuff like that it keeps things functioning properly this gun right here we've got um same thing right here you can see we've got done spraying a lot of cabinets with this this gun and right here there's some paint built up on it needs to be cleaned i'm going to get a wire brush out but i'm going to squirt a little bit of wd-40 on that on the rods right here and once again one of the reasons why i have an upright position like this a little bit of pressure behind that somebody didn't release the pressure on the gun so it's always good to release you never want to store your guns with pressure or your pump with pressure underneath it it's bad for the packings going to release that trigger drop a little wd-40 down inside down on there on the rods once again the reason why i like how my gun's in an upright position like this is it allows that rod and even on contractor two guns there's i'm kind of like these slides and guides paint will get down there down inside there gum up and it causes the trigger not to function properly or the trigger to even stick and i've had it happen multiple times you know with graco guns once i started uh lubricating them in this fashion with wd-40 and allowing that wd-40 to work down on those guides or rods i never had paint um building up gumming up or sticking on there never had a trigger stick again again before i get ready to spray i'm going to take a little wire brush clean the end of that and um that'll clean off really nicely but if paint gets built up on them pretty heavily at the end from spraying cabinets i've been spraying cabinets all day long you'll put some wd-40 on there it's going to make it a lot easier to clean that's simply how i keep my guns running you know functioning properly once i started lubricating them you'll in this fashion once i've never had a gun ever stick before nothing like trying to thread on you know a gun extension or a thread on your housing having paint gummed up on there once again the wd-40 will keep the paint from sticking on there it makes it clean off a lot easier you're with a five and one tool or a wire brush so lubricate your guns lubricate your pumps and you're going to have a better pa better experience spraying and not having your equipment break down on you so there you have it some tips and tricks
