Stoney Ridge Farmer

What happens here

This video demonstrates how to efficiently trim overgrown fence lines using a walk-behind string trimmer, specifically the DR Pilot XT, to prevent tall grass and sedge from grounding out electric fences and to maintain pastures for rotational grazing. The process includes showing the tool, loading the string, and actively trimming along multiple fence lines.

folks today on the Stoney Ridge Farm we are mowing fence lines with the cows we're going to have some fun I'm going to show you a cool piece of equipment hope you enjoy [Music] the word [Music] alive [Music] we got work to do guys welcome to the Stoney Ridge Farm I'm Josh a Sony rich farmer we're here on my 150 acre first generation Farm in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina and we've got a tool that we're going to use this is not a sponsored video this is what I do you'll never use a standard weed whacker again we're going to be trimming fence lines and we're going to show you guys exactly how I do it exactly what I do and exactly what the problem is we've got a little bit of a problem with our electric fences for the cows the cows are right there they want to move but we're not moving them yet until we get our fence lines trimmed [Music] all right guys welcome to the Stoney Ridge Farm if this is your first time or your 50 millionth time here please hit that like button consider subscribing to the Channel all around us is 150 acre first generation Farm project I'm building a farm and here is what the problem is aside from the cows drinking too much water you guys have a drinking problem you better settle down down ease off on that it's going to catch up with you one day right these are my cows they're 33 brood cows in here steers and brood cows and we are out on a disaster of a broom sedge mess that is what the problem is so if you look right here you'll see this is my electric fence on our electric fence we have to keep this trimmed up all the way down you can see we've got a lot of room sedge this means that we need some nitrogen in the soil and our pH is quite low so we've got a pH of about four in this area we'll be targeting this area with a little bit of lime and we'll also be targeting this area with hay bales we'll be unrolling those hay bales out on this broom sedge and it'll make it go away so what we've got here is an area that the cows simply cannot graze it can't get up under here they don't like eating this broom sedge and what we've got to do especially as we get over into here some of this stuff is five and six feet tall this is what we call broom sedge or broom straw and it's leaned right up against my electric fence wire so what we're going to be doing is we're going to take that string trimmer that I'm going to show you right now the Dr string trimmer we're going to cruise all these fence lines that have the broom sedge growed up in them so without further Ado let's show you the tool that I'm going to use and you won't use a traditional weed whacker after using one of these this thing is super cool awesome tool great for the farm great for the homestead so here's what we have among all the other things that are in the back of the Kubota here this is from Dr it is a 174 CC seven foot pounds evidently that's how much torque it has and this is called a string trimmer basically a portable Dr string trimmer what's it called the r Power Equipment trimmer what this has we'll tip it on back here I've got it full of fuel hopefully we don't leak any fuel out this has string trimmer string that's really heavy duty I don't anticipate that we would even harm this whatsoever with what we're doing I'm glad I looked at it though because that guy needs to go in and be locked in place we've got it set to where it cuts about that high and all we're going to do is simply Cruise these fence lines that need love so without further Ado let's fire this Critter up let's see how easy it starts I have not started it today I wanted to come into this and let you guys know just how awesome and reliable this piece of equipment is it's called the pilot XT that's what it's called again not a sponsored video I did a video a while back trimming up around my ponds and that video I think is titled you'll never weed whack again because you don't need a weed whacker to do this job you can simply push this along almost like a push mower and it'll do everything you need to do now we're going to cut and when we cut we want to be headed down the hill so we'll go all the way down then we'll walk it back and then we'll go all the way down that fence line and then we'll walk it back then we'll go all the way down this fence line so really I'm going to walk about probably a mile with this Critter and we're going to get a lot of work done versus toting a big old wind mowing with a weed whacker or string trimmer this is the Mack Daddy string trimmer so when I first got this I was very skeptical as to whether it would be something I would use on the property I'm very very skeptical I'm always skeptical of a new tool much like probably a lot of you guys are I want to make sure we're all straightened out here we're going to go ahead this is again the first time that I pulled the cable today there is a primer on here somewhere where yet there it is we'll give it one two three until we start feeling fuel all right six pull pumps there and we're gonna give her a tug [Music] we just got done weed whacking that one section of fence line I'm going to show you guys how it's loaded basically you just press these uh the two ends of a pre-cut uh it's about a 14 inch pre-cut uh section of string trimmer string cows are so grumpy we're going to push this in and we're going to latch it into place I'll show you so no string and the higher you put it up here the higher the cut the lower you put it the lower the cut pretty simple take the two ends press them down on the outside feed them through just like so okay give a little tug then lock that down make sure you're nice and even as you tug them in and lock this down over the little loops and it'll snug itself down as it starts to run so that's it both are already back in place we're ready to rock and roll much much easier than restringing a weed whacker that's for sure so we're gonna head on down and get this side real quick and then we're going to show you guys at the end of the video right up next to the fence line there's a guard on this that provides us a barrier to keep us from hitting our string trim string on the fence line so we can cruise this right up to the edge of the fence line and get a really really nice Cut I'll show you that at the end folks I'll put a link down in the video description to this Critter on Amazon if you decide you want to pick yourself up one I don't have a coupon code I'm sorry I wish I did but this is what I use on the farm so let's get busy we'll show you the last little bit on the fence line thank you [Music] foreign [Music] well they say the proof is in the pudding and the sun's going down on me but the pudding is right here that is the proof that line there and this line here all done the ones that are back over here all done all this took me every bit of 15 to 20 minutes and I filmed it so that may take a little bit longer the cows are ready to move this evening I move them twice a day to a new Paddock this is a regenerative Farm in other words when we move them every single day we put a little extra pressure on the land a little extra manure on the land the cows eat everything including the weeds including the undesirables so that's the goal everything but that broom sedge that I just mowed through now I know that's an indication of poor soil Health but we're not going to be correcting it with chemicals we're going to be correcting it with our room knit animals now here's the argument for a push mower you will never get a push mower into grass that's this high and cut it that like that you guys probably saw where I mowed through here and I got right up to the edge of the fence with the Dr mower this guard makes mowing fence lines so much easier awesome tool guys great tool for your farm I use this not only down the fence lines I also use it around the ponds and anywhere I need to weed whack I never will have to use a weed whacker again I hope fingers crossed unless we review one on the channel and that will take us through to the next tool Tuesday on the Stony Ridge Farm guys thanks a lot for joining me here today just having a little fun I wanted to show you guys a quick Tool Tech tip don't buy a string trimmer buy one of those that thing kicks butt I'll post links down the video description of that Critter in case you guys want to pick one up Dr done right right cows I couldn't get him to shut up a minute ago and now they just won't say a thing guys thanks a lot we'll see you next time on the Stoney Ridge pound that like button I hope you enjoyed this video this is just getting out on the farm and having some fun take care [Music] this thing is awesome thank you it's all good I'm gonna put it on uh [Music] we are here on life yeah I got cows man when I got an airplane up here [Applause] fashion all around us is a first generation
