What happens here

The Wood Brothers are the oldest, longest continuously operating team in NASCAR history. This building, which was once their race shop, has over 75 years of Ford Racing history documented in extreme detail by the Wood family. We filmed this museum with Len and Eddie Wood back in 2023, BUT since then they have gotten a lot of new artifacts, pulled new gen 4 NASCAR cars out of storage, and set up all new displays!

You got to do it right or don't do it at all. It's almost like this stuff finds us. He cut all all this out. This one actually has what was called Highport Heads. That one right there was one of the better ones. 50s, '60s, '7s, '8s, '90s, O's, 10, 20s. Today, we're taking you through the allnew Wood Brothers Museum. Since the last video we made, they've taken things out of stores, rearranged stuff, set up new displays, and acquired new items. Just when you think this museum couldn't get any better, it did. Last year, kind of uh honoring our 75th anniversary, NASCAR Hall of Fame wanted to do a display. Well, as they were getting done with it, they said, "We're going to give you the banners." They pull on like a pair of socks with a zipper on the bottom and it just pulls it down tight. It's cloth. I would I would have bet I would have never thought it was cloth. Anyway, that's where the idea started of like maybe we can recreate that look here. And so there was three three cars and a truck sitting here. And then it was a parts washer and a Magnaflux and welders and welding tables and just and a metal rack and just it was a race shop. And so we we hired a guy to come in and we moved some stuff and repainted it. He cleaned the wall and repainted. Uh this is something Leonard fixed when he was I'm going to say 74ish 5ish for 351 is a box manifold. That was the lid. What he did he cut he cut all all this out. The distributor set here. So this was all mashed in for the distributor and for whatever reason they mashed it in back here to match it and they shouldn't have. So, somebody at Ford took an engine like with all the valves closed. They bolted a manifold on the heads with the valves like this just used like that right there with all the valves closed and poured it full of rubber. All the intake ports through the rub with full of rubber. Once it set up, you could basically take and pull them out. And uh it was all, you know, squiggly rubber, but it showed let's call it these were rectangles. All these were good. Get to this one's all pinched in. It was more Let's see. How do I want to put it? It was more like that. And this one, too. And he needed to straighten it out. So, what he did was took two distributors and cut the shaft out of one of them and made a taller base for the bottom, probably about an inch and a quarter, and basically raised the distributor cap up. raised the base of the distributor up where it's under that and he pulled that out, straightened it out where it was the same. This is straight and that's straight. 30 horsepower gain. Now Jay Kushman, he he bought this from us in the 70s after we quit running because it's junk junk to us. He gave it back to us a couple years ago for Leonard's birthday. >> That's so cool. >> So, and he gave me this was a he had a body. It didn't even have boosters in it or anything and it was all corroded up. Can you use this for anything? Well, let me see. Let me get Leonard on that. And of course, he he had some boosters and he pilot he he founded some float bowls and so he fixed that's that's what's called a 4500 Holly Dominator 1050 CFM. That's a Ford auto light carburetor right there. That's one daddy possibly run on the last race on the beach. I got two or three, but I know one of them was the last one. Could be that one. Now, he didn't cut the floor out. Floor floor stayed, but he cut everything else out. Like I said, just straighten them up. What's the bottom look like? Wow. I take that back. He has done some work here, but primarily that was still the base of the fully had the part number on it. I say cast by Buddy Bar. >> Buddy Buddy Bar. Yeah, that was a >> I don't know if that's a name or what that was. >> Bud Bud had it casted. Just put his name on it. And then this is just more for air. >> Try to help the cooling. >> Yeah. Well, just get a little That's Let's put it this way. That's early day of like like that having air under it. >> Oh, yeah. Just old stuff like we used to run under restricted plate like that's a blank right there. Now that one was machined somewhere else but Benny would make early on Benny was making them look like that hand to Leonard and then he would make them look like that. >> This era of the restrictor plate stuff is so fascinating. Well, the rules were at that time it'd have a I believe that's an inch and 3/4 hole in it because they had a go no go gauge. So, you'd have to have something go all the way to the floor and then you had to have a they had a block that was kind of shaped like a stop sign and it was kind of angled on the the bottom corners and it had to fit flush in there. You could do whatever you wanted to under it. So that one right there was one of the better ones. >> This one? >> Yeah. >> And obviously that one wasn't too bad because it survived and still on the manifold. >> So once they figured out which one was good, they would weld it to the manifold. >> Yeah. Yeah. Cuz you had to So that See, you're That's probably right. Right about there is where the gap sat. No, wait. Right there. That's where the gap sat. He had to make it look like it was never there. There again, that was all legal. That was the rules. That's when he was filling intake ports up cuz they were way too big. >> Those are iron. What would that have been? Like mid80s. >> Um >> I don't know when they went through aluminum heads. >> No, aluminum heads come out around 81ish2ish. >> Really? So that's even >> that's that's about >> that's probably about late7s cuz initially we were running without you know with the bigger ports and then it didn't take long whether we need to fill them up. It did the same thing with exhaust. All that's completely illegal. >> You don't see these nextg cars in the race state on display. How do you how did that happen? This is the car that we won. 100th win with Harrison Daytona. >> AND BUSH GOES LOW. BURTON BLOCKS. He gets back up. Comes to the line. JEFF, YOUR LITTLE BOY has done it. Taylor wins in Daytona. What a magical moment. IT'S THE WOOD BROTHERS 100TH WIN. The Mercury is 100% real and that's what makes it what it is. I mean, that's a that's an Ameilia Allen award winner. And I think we went through it before about the, you know, the spatter paint in the trunk and all the stuff and it's the cracked up paint, but it's original. So, we get to this one and we we're only allowed seven chassis uh now of the next gen car. So, basically what we did was pull one out, but we had to replace it. >> Still has the engine in it. >> Oh my god. I I figured it'd be a roller. >> Well, [clears throat] so we won the race. Team Pinsky as they do our stuff. They basically parked this car away, isolated it, and it was kind of put on hold. If emergency, like if you went to three cars, you could tear up a if you went to practice and one in race and did the same thing next week, before you know it, you're short on cars. But they left it best they could. They pulled the seat insert out to move it to another car, but they basically left it set. They ask, "How do we want it restored?" Did we want like a 10point thing like Roger Pinsky all cleaned up and all spit shine everything? No. I want uh I want the scrapes and all the stuff. I want it like it finished a race. See, you can see all the confetti inside. Once the season closed and we we made it through, then we started replacing it with other stuff. And then you we early on we talked about, well, we could use wrecked up suspension or whatever damaged suspension parts, you know, just get by. It's if you don't if you do that, it's not the car. So, you you got to spend whatever it cost. The engine had to come down and be torn down for NASCAR because it won a race. And so then Doug Yates and them his group um they did that and then they put it back together and it was actually ready to go to Tallaladega. But if we if we used it at Tallaladega then you wreck and tear it up it ain't it ain't no more. So we Doug worked on a plan and we wound up using the Atlanta engine which is the same spec and we preserved it. So, this engine is fresh, ready for Tallaladega, but it's in the car to never be used again. That's awesome. Yeah. Again, we back to the You got to do it right or don't do it at all. So, that's And they they had to they cleaned the uh confetti off of it to go through inspection cuz we had to go through the scanner and all that stuff. You can't see it behind me, but I do have Neil Bonnet and David Pearson on my wall over there, but I don't have a Wood Brothers 124 scale diecast yet. So, we're going to go on Whatnot and see what we can find. Whatnot is the number one live stream shopping app where you can buy, sell, or auction literally anything. They're also giving away 20 Nintendo Switch 2, but more on that later. Pokemon cards, sports cards, electronics, tools, coins, toys, Legos, Funkos, and so much more like diecast. Auction going. He's got a lot. Let's see if he Oh, he's got a Wood Brothers car. Let's see if I can get him to run it. So, I can do this now. Yes. Obviously, I want the Vegas win car because we were at that race at the Penso 400 and we were with Pens Oil in Victory Lane for that race. Kind of like live streaming Meeks Auctions with a little social media twist cuz you can type in the chat forum. Let's flip to another one here and see what they got. Oh, same guy. Kyle Bush Atlanta win. We were at that race, too. So, I'm going to get that. You can get $15 off your first purchase by using the link in the description or the QR code on the screen to enter the giveaway for 20 Nintendo Switch 2OS. Sign up to Whatnot. Make sure you're following at whatnot, but you might as well use my link to download whatnot because it gets you $15 off your first purchase anywhere on the app. If you find the right deals, you can get 164 diecasts for less than 15 bucks all day. >> And so they basically swept the swept the confetti up and put it in a like a Lowe's grocery bag, one of them little plastic ones. And then I had Vinnie make a like a lucite tube that's up front on the table. >> Oh, that's awesome. >> It's little bitty Coke bottles cuz all the stuff uh right there you can see that's that's a little Coke bottles what all those were. >> Oh, >> all cut up all the pieces. I mean >> interesting. >> I think you can see them in there, too. >> Yeah, >> cuz it was a it was a Coke Coke 0400 or something like that. So, you had to go through a lot of extra effort in some chance circumstance to even be able to have this car here in this form. >> Yeah. I mean, it took uh one race in August and uh again, we had to wait till the winter time cuz you can't Everybody's up to right here racing and so during the winter is when you do the catchup stuff. And uh we got it we got it sometime after the first of the year. Now again, I mean, it's the same tires all scrubbed up. The whole deal. It's the car. So that's This is a uniform that Harrison had won the race in. Uniform, helmet, shoes, the whole deal. Gloves. And they gave that back to us. This was not part of that display. They gave it to us. Here's a box. And open it up. Wait a minute. Okay. No. What are we going to do with this? So I asked Peggy one day something about can you find somewhere that's got mannequins, you know, like Simpson or somebody's got to have, you know, to display uniforms. I forget. I think it was Uline or somebody like that had one for like 80 bucks. >> Yeah. >> I said, "Well, let's let's just see. Let's just see if it would work." Now, it took about four of us to get that on there. And it wounds up he's probably three or four five inches taller than he really is. But uh we put that together too and it's they said well you know it's white in there. Wait a minute. Let me grab a pair of sunglasses. That's one of daddy's from uh 57 Champion Speedway. It should be fab ' 50s60s7s 80s 90s O's 10 20s. And so what they did it would be one case would have 5060s. So, we had a 50s and a 60s shirt, 70s and 80s, 90s O's, tens, 20s. So, it was a shirt to match each one in the glass case. Well, I didn't have the glass cases, so I said, "Well, let's take a let's take one of our workts and put put a cover on it, cloth on it." I had Peggy up front and Kim critiquing a little bit. What's anything wrong with this? Well, I would move this one up. Okay. All right. What? So then one of the items was uh Leonard's go-kart here that he built when he was 13 or 14 and it's a Johnson washing machine, gas powered engine on it. So that's him in 1948 sitting on it. >> That's insane. >> That's it. Now how it's how it survived, I don't know. >> I was just going to ask you that. >> I don't know. Where was it? >> Uh, some of it was at the home place and he may have had it himself. I don't really remember how it got here, but anyway, it's we've had it up front for years and didn't, you know, it's just okay. It's under under a bench under a table, I guess. Well, become different when we put it in that display down there. Um, it actually we had like uh the pit board and that jack. So, that right there ties to Uncle Leno. I'm pretty sure that's the same jack. And then uh cuz it's got that handle on the side. You see the handle on the far side? All right. See it? See it up there in that one right there? >> Yeah. >> I think that's the same one. Now that's that's before the aluminum jacks come in. Uncle Leonard made an aluminum with a aluminum I'll call it a skid plate under the bottom of it. It's at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. It's been there for I think it's been there ever since they they opened. It's upstairs on that on that third floor. And we found that picture to go with this. Now, that wasn't part of the NASCAR display, but that was that was kind of uh honoring Uncle Deleno for everything he'd won cuz I think if you look back, he won as a Jackman. I think he won something like 92 races as a Jackman. >> Jeez. >> That's got to be a record. >> Yeah. This is something Leonard made out of, you know, handformed out of aluminum, which that's why the the one in the back, I want to leave it natural to show his workmanship cuz the same thing is under this paint. We've covered it up. And then obviously Leonard and his prime on changing tires right there. And then this has to be in the early 50s right here, this picture. And then uh actually the picture they used right here, there's the engine. See, it doesn't even have doesn't have anything on the front yet. Uh so that's early version on the engine. So that was taken a while back. >> Did Leonard make this to attach to a ball? >> No. I'll have to confess. I've picked that up at the flea market. I mean, at a antique shop. >> It's cool regardless. >> Well, it look it looks apart. >> It does look the part. >> Well, now that box right there, that was daddy's first tool box right there. of them. >> You would throw that in the trunk and on the way he went. >> Actually, a fellow, one of our old crew members, Charlie Chapman, he and he passed away in the last 3 days. He called me, I'm gonna say six, eight months ago, maybe a year ago, and said he had an old toolbox that daddy had given that we had got a new one and it just sitting there at his house and wanted know I did I want it back. I'll take it. So that's that was a that was something that went and came back. Is that one of those ones in the >> I don't think it's one of those cuz the the drawers don't match up heightwise. So really be honest with you that looks to be older older than those. >> What about the table it's sitting on? Is that the same table? >> That's table. Yeah. There was Leonard at some point put an extension out of but that's the table. >> That's so cool. >> It's just like the the lathe. That's the table. I mean, he made that table right there. That's that's that's the lathe right there. And Daddy with the band saw the drill press down there. We believe it was a guy named T. Taylor Warren who was NASCAR photographer. Now, don't get me wrong, Daddy always wore shirt tail in and everything, but they do like look like they have cleaned up for these pictures. That's that forklift. >> Oh, >> that's hilarious. >> It's out there. >> I showed it to him. What a piece of >> It got moved out of here [laughter] when we when we upgraded over here. It had to go. >> Wasn't room for it. >> You don't seem too sad about it not being in here anymore. >> Hated. >> And then that wagon right there is one that's probably over on the other side right there, too. It was that's the first wagon I think we ever had. Everybody had >> and I can tell you this that that right there that's that bandsaw right there. That that's it turned sideways. So actually one more piece of it. That right there it's a brake riveter. H >> I got it turned different. Wow. Where was all this stuff? >> That's a jail shop. >> I mean, like, if that was in the 60s, >> where did this stuff sit until you put it in here? >> Well, I mean, we used we used it all >> the way through the '9s and everything. >> Well, not this. It's just got it just got set somewhere. >> Huh. >> And then when we cleaned out, moved up here, here it come. Uh, let's see. Now, I will say this, the band saw probably in and drill press probably went to daddy's house. That's daddy's first air compressor he ever bought. >> 1956. So, that was at daddy's house. Now, let's go ahead and tell a little ugly part of that. It was not good. So, let's just say it was turned around this way. So, the belts was over here and it was at his house. And let's just say it was wired straight into the fuse box. And let's just say to turn it on, you had to reach up here and turn it like that. >> Oh. >> And let's just say he had his fingers on it one day and he turned it on. It basically pulled his fingers. It pulled was it three of them? >> But I mean it he it got okay. >> Yeah. But it we we were already in Mortal um because like it had been about 2005 and they took him to the hospital in Winston, but it basically pulled three finger fingertips off. >> Did they put them back on? >> Uh no. Now I came back up here cuz we both came up from Morsville to Winston and I came on back up here and then we're laying in the floor and there was no very little blood. And what they did, they went they went up his inside of his arm and cut skin and basically made him new fingers. >> Did it like cauterize it cuz it was so like >> I don't know. But I what I do know is we went that we were allowed we could go back one at a time and he pulled whatever the towel off of it and it let's just say if it was right there right there up was gone and it was a it was a bone. picked the wrong. >> Yeah. [laughter] >> Okay. It was all three. It wasn't that one. >> Flipping us off. [laughter] >> But he pulled it off and it was basically a white bone. A little round round end on it right there. >> And and the kind of the odd part of it was even though the skin came from here, he grew fingernails back. >> Really? >> Wow. Not >> not not not like he'd been to a manicure place. What do you call it? >> It grew fingernails back. >> That's interesting. >> I don't know how. >> They they never were able to >> and they told daddy to basically keep doing this right here. The part they didn't tell him was keep doing it both ways. And so any towards the end his hand was more like formed like that. But of course that was better to…
