Masking Tips To Spray Kitchen Cabinets

this paint life tv i'm christy idaho painter in this video i'm out here in a kitchen we're doing some kitchen cabinets i'm going to give you some tips and tricks how i mask off face frames doors and drawer fronts so if you want some tips masking your kitchen cabinets or counter jobs stay tuned for this video [Applause] [Music] all right we're out here at the kitchen job doing some kitchen cabinets that's very small kitchen this is just a two day job i'm going to be masking off some door um face frame door face frames and we're gonna be masking off some drawers and we've got a few pet screws around there you'll probably hear them in the background so i'm masking off some doors right now these are drawer drawer fronts i'm masking off some drawer fronts using inch and a half frog tape if your job's going to extend you know more than a day you definitely want to be using green frog tape or blue frog tape to mask on anything because it actually comes off a lot easier than our orange production tape so i use green frog tape on all my face frames when i'm doing any filling in i'll use the orange frog tape to fill in because it's a lot less expensive so i'm masking the drawer front still keeping my rollers exposed i'll show you how i actually match those rollers you don't want any overspray on your rollers at all because it'll affect the functioning of the rollers now i just use paper i like masking with nine inch paper and you can there's multiple options you can cut fold a lot of different ways you can deal with your paper i like to just fold it up and then i'm going to fold it down crease it and then i'll tack it and this is where i start doing some tacking and filling in i'm gonna be using production tape that doesn't cost as much if i'm gonna be masking over my rollers i'm going to use frog tape because i don't want anything sticking to those rollers so i'm going to cover those rollers up so they're not going to get overspray i definitely like my masking to look you know neat tidy professional just in case the customer you know walks in looks at the job site you can see every aspect of their house is being treated with professionalism you can see all the paper nine inch paper fits perfectly right on there i like this added insurance adding some tape to my edges just like that it sticks really well to the exposed adhesive on your frog tape then i'm just going to cover my rollers once again i'm not worried about the metal work on these rollers they're not you can't see them they're not exposed so just like that just definitely want to make sure you get them covered a hundred percent check for leaks make sure there's no leaks in your masking and that's what that looks like you know if you're unsure whether this is gonna push through or tack down you know once again use production tape stick it on there now that's stuck a hundred percent just like that the paper is cheaper than plastic so i use paper on my drawer fronts the paper's not big enough to cover the doors so that's where i'm gonna show you using plastic i like using um folded the 3m plastic the masking process is extremely fast once you you look learn how to do it once you've done it fast and efficient a lot of people are not a lot of people but some people are going to say well i could have those kitchen cabinets painted by hand before you have a mask off and i'm not going to argue how fast you can do it but i'll argue about the finish quality a sprayed on finish is way better than a brushed on finish it's going to look like it came out of the factory so we always want to spray our our cabinet finishes so so those drawer fronts are masked off right there we've got a area right here ideally you want to have this all emptied out so you can not have to mask around your products and stuff that are going to break and stuff and customer didn't empty out this sync part so i'm just gonna have to deal with it i can empty it out myself but um there's nothing in here that you know i'm worried about breaking just a bunch of household chemicals another drawer front just going to mask this drawer front off just like this i like working from top to bottom it's a lot easier than because i can get my hands up underneath work from top to bottom there's not very much of a lift on the bottom part so i'll show you what that looks like you know attacking my tape to that here in just a second i'll show you we've got we're going to be doing the floor i use any type i'm anytime i'm masking onto the floor i use yellow frog tape yellow frog tape won't damage the floor especially if it's a hardwood floor it's not going to lift up the coating on the hardwood floor so you're masking on hardwood floors make sure you're using yellow frog tape this is kind of a um this is a rubber looks like um it looks like wood but it's not it's a rubber product so [Music] take your time get this measured out just right you want the exact length right you're going to tack it right up top this is our plastic paper make sure just slow down get it right here within a quarter of an inch tack it up it's not sticking very well because the it's dusty under here see it dust so it's not sticking so great up under there i'm gonna try to stick some production tape up there see if this will help it stick the production tape has a lot stronger adhesive so i'm just working right along i'm not going to be painting the insides of the cabinets or i'm not going to be painting the underside so i'm masking these off i'm going to be masking the countertops off you see i've removed the appliances if you can remove the appliances it's always best to remove them that way you don't have to mask them off and that's why it's going to be painted behind here this is all covered up by a microwave i removed the microwave i removed the stove and i removed the refrigerator it's a good opportunity at that point in time to clean it is really really dirty behind each one of these so good chance to clean it all up so i've got frog tape yellow for the floor i'm going to be putting paper down and i mask my paper with frog tape blue the frogtape blue is a little bit cheaper than frog tape green saves you some money but it has the same paint block technology i always put production tape on my maskers because i don't need expensive tape on the masker itself so we're just spraying the base frames in here [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is a good place where you could use frog tape blue it's going to be cheaper than the orange but i want i don't want stuff to stick to my granite so just using the blue to fill this in right here so you can see i just i keep all these different tapes available to me just sitting around and uh frog tape is gonna make your project a lot easier a lot simpler you're not going to have paint bleeding through your edges i'm going to be painting the sides right here where the stove goes in i'm gonna paint this back wall it's actually never been painted before so [Music] the 2k poly that we're spraying on here will actually be really good for that back wall make it a lot more durable cleanable [Music] the thing i do got to say is it's way better to over mass than under mass and get overspray on stuff and once you've had experience spraying you have an idea of what's going to get over spray on it so you have a better idea [Applause] of what needs to be masked once you've sprayed [Music] [Applause] [Music] just want to have paper on everything here covered make sure i don't have any leaks make sure everything's nice tapped [Music] i only keep two sides sizes of products i keep 72 inch masking film and i keep nine inch paper in my vehicles i don't like to have a lot of different sizes it takes more time to manage the inventory so i like to just keep it simple nine inch paper 72 inch masking film [Music] i do get questions a lot people say well it's a lot of money and masking it really isn't and this kitchen's only going to be one roll of paper one roll of masking foam it's gonna take probably just maybe an hour and a half to mask it all [Music] i only keep two sizes of tape i keep inch and a half and one inch tape i don't use any other sizes there like to keep it pretty simple tape wise also [Music] so i'm gonna start masking off some floor down here so i use yellow frog tape to mask my floors off so i'm gonna run my masking along the edges of the floor [Music] then i'll fill that in with paper so yellow frog tape is it's a delicate surface tape so it cleanly releases off of delicate surfaces [Applause] i'm just gonna pack my nine inch paper to the frog tape [Music] so i'm masking up my face frames up here i don't want to get any over spray back up here on the deck when it's holding here so i'm just masking off and tacking my paper up to the ceiling i don't have to mask off a whole lot because i'm using a really small fine finish tip so i'm gonna mask off these big boxes i'll show you what it looks like the mask off a box i use inch and a half frog tape stick behind my face frame and you're just going to tack it behind the face frame once again i like to use you know frog tape green because it's a 21 day release if you're here on the job site for more than a day it comes off a lot easier than just a regular production tape you want something that's going to release quick and easy there's not a lip on the top and bottom here so i got a mask right down on the bottom this is a little bit different scenario than most cabinets so i gotta mask it flat [Music] right along the line [Music] and then i'll attack the plastic to that [Music] [Applause] see i like to just some people will cut their plastic with a knife but then you end up just having plastic floating around you know the job site that you got to clean up and i just like to just tuck it under [Music] one more time mask that there to get it really tight into those corners [Music] so you don't have a lips i don't have a lip to mask on top and bottom on this one so i'm just going to mask it a little bit different i'm going to put top and bottom first mask it right on the line and then i'll do my sides after that frog tape's important because you don't want any paint bleeding down on that white so so one handy little tip is also don't be reloading your maskers i like to have if i'm using paper and plastic i'm gonna have a masker for plastic and i'm gonna have a masker for paper and that way i don't have to spend time and spend time reloading them and stuff and then i also really like the ladder hooks because you can keep them on you at all times if you're working on a large job you know doing interior extra masking right here in a kitchen it's all right in front of me so i don't hold them or hang them on me because i'm in a tight space and they could be hitting stuff but just make sure you have you know a masker two maskers for each person if you got two people masking you know one guy should have a paper plastic master and the other guy should have a paper and plastic mask [Music] all right there you have it the masking process is all done we did some boxes some drawer fronts we
