What happens here

This video features a man recounting a family story about using an old galvanized water heater tank to pre-heat water for their main water heater. By placing the tank next to a wood stove and eventually painting it black, his father was able to significantly increase the water temperature before it entered the electric water heater, thereby reducing the electric bill. This anecdote serves as an example of identifying areas for energy savings and consumption patterns through observation and experimentation, though it predates modern smart home energy monitoring technologies.

Dad gave me this old tank. I want to tell you about this tank. This has a little family history to it as well. This is an old water heater tank. He had this tank sitting beside his wood stove. It is a galvanized tank. We figured out that if it's sitting beside the wood stove, it would preheat the water that went into the water heater. In other words, it made his water heater work less in the wintertime. So, that was kind of cool. We did figure out that just leaving it silver, it would not absorb the heat as much as if you painted it black. So, it wasn't doing anything when we had it sitting beside the wood stove. And I'm talking about maybe, yeah, 4 in from the wood stove, 5 in from the my dad's big wood stove. No heat absorption whatsoever. Painted it black, pre-warmed the water to about 104, 105° before it went in the water heater. So, my dad effectively figured out a way to preheat the water, so he saved on his electric bill. I don't know. But, it's just the way I grew up, man. One day we'll take you down there and we'll hang out with Dad, for sure.
