What happens here
This project details the process of transporting a large excavator that has a non-functional computer system, which also affects its ability to start and control the swing motor. The steps include initial troubleshooting, attempting jump-starts, installing new batteries, and meticulously loading the heavy, partially disabled machine onto a flatbed trailer for transport to a repair shop. The project highlights the challenges and dangers of moving heavy equipment when key systems are inoperable.

(8,706 characters)okay that was dumb [Music] show you guys the worst the worst door in the industry oh plenty of room [Music] small victory right small victory take it while you can look like i missed the party the gates just opening up all right guys we got a pretty jam-packed day today we're to be doing something we haven't done in a long time johnny when's the last time we hauled that excavator must have been two or three years ago right so we had the trailer rebuilt earlier this spring just so we can haul the excavator and today we're gonna load that bad boy up onto the trailer and we're gonna bring it down and get it put back together the computer is out on it let's take a look we've got we put jumpers on here oil's good how is that any water in the fuel hey what do you think about sticking the truck on at the same time plenty of room hopefully we'll get it started and then after we get it started we still got to get it up on the trailer if she doesn't have a computer system all right so we got two systems charging eh turning over dude that's working okay that's working it's turning over and your truck just kicked in the altar okay so what how do we get this hooked up we got your truck hooked up to the batteries we got the jumper the jumper is bypassing the batteries jumper's bypassing the batteries hooked right up to the starter right yep so we've got the jumper positive up there negative on the frame so positives up there that's the jumper tim's truck is on the two batteries that's the best results we've gotten of every any configuration we've tried yet it's good to ask johnny sometimes is that your idea i've been taking credit this whole time famous blaine how you doing buddy got a load full of crap back here don't you it was clean this morning perfectly clean this we got some stuff for you well i think an executive decision has been made since the pickup truck is getting pulled away from the excavator new batteries he's gonna get two new batteries some more time just getting one i i don't have a volt meter to see what's pushing out more you know what batteries have would you bring the old batteries with you to see if they're any good no he's gonna take him on now i figure i guess we can but we can do that some other time just get this going we know they're decent if they're gonna we'll charge them up we'll just individually charge them up that way we got some spare batteries yeah we always bring them in and test them yeah you can use them in the pieces of equipment you need them in the tobaccos or something yeah all right so you guys the worst the worst door in the industry is right above my head [Music] it's got okay look at these latches it's got two come on ah you never know if it's latched or not latched what have you that's it so it goes right above your head as soon as you operate the machine is bouncing it just comes right down and smacks you right on your skull this right here is one of the original doors that got me hating overhead door systems it has a really inadequate latch system it's on the john deere 310 e tractor loader backhoe and if any of you guys ran one of these let me know what your thoughts are on it and if you've ever had any issues with that overhead door as well what do you get two brand new ones so we're not gonna have much of an excuse for her not to fire this time whoa batteries wow big difference they make how much money do we spend just trying to get the other ones to work right yeah three guys time is money not getting stuff done on other jobs no yeah time is money all right you guys let's crime climb crime climb into the old girl and let's put her through her paces a little bit not yet there's an idol up no she won't idle up either so she's fired up all the way yeah that's the thing might not have enough oil in it something's wrong with the swing motor here now isn't it because that the computer out well it looks like the computer's out but the computer controls every component of it it just doesn't seem like it was kind of clunking when you were spinning it wasn't it ah yeah but it's saying something con failure so he's checking the oil right there he missed it that's the swing motor oil to make sure we got oil did you hear put rev up on her own yeah it did also the lights are flashing and then the windshield wiper goes every once in a while the lights are flat will move a little bit and the lights will turn off mice that's what happens when a mouse gets in your excavator she's locked up she's locked the swing motor is locked up side to side this is going to get hairy all right let's be his eyes [Music] he can't see nothing now he's got to get this precisely lined up because each one of these tracks is going to go over the trailer each side of this machine hangs over on both sides so without being able to see he's got to get that lined up exactly right i don't think he's there yet no he's too heavy on this side hey blaine come on over here let's communicate with him he's too heavy hold him up he's too heavy on this side what do you think that looks about right right yeah we're about right all right so let me kind of explain what's going on with this situation with the swing motor frozen locked in place that means that we have no control over the cab of the excavator and typically what we would do is we would just rotate the cab around drive the excavator right up onto the trailer and if the excavator tries to go one way or another way we can actually use the cab to finesse the machine onto the trailer it's not really that difficult or a big of a deal but he's completely blind so he's trying to back up and he's got to balance both of his tracks equally off from the trailer because we have just about as much track on the trailer as we have off the trailer and if we go too far one side or too far the other side we can slide the excavator completely off from the trailer and so that's why i'm as nervous as a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs because i know exactly what tim is trying to do at this point he has no ability to finesse the machine because of that swing motor being out hope that clears it up a little you gotta go over that way about two inches time more more remember you gotta hang over both sides evenly [Music] he's not lined up with the trailer though he's not lined up straight with the trailer his machine is coming this way the trailers lined up this way he's trying to compensate so you yep see that see that yep yep yep straight up you're perfect right now as you're looking at tim right now he's probably in one of the most dangerous positions he can be in in an excavator the relatively safe machinery except when you get to a point where if this goes one way or the other way you want to make sure that you go you want to make sure that you go with it you never want to fall out of the machine in a case like this so if tim falls toward me in this excavator what we really want him to do is stay locked into his seat because that cab should take the brunt of the fall if that machine starts to fall off the trailer and he falls out of the machine and then the machine falls on top of them it's game over at that point and machines falling off trailers like this in minnesota is not as uncommon as you think in fact november through april we've got to de-ice that deck and de-ice all of the tracks because those steel tracks running up a steel trailer deck is a lot like trying to climb a hill on skis it just doesn't work you're fine yeah you're twisting out but you're control it a fine bit you can see how he's going this way he's got to go that way so now normally we could we could do a lot of this with the whole machine together just the hair straight yeah you got to go that way the back end back end backhand you got to go that way yep yep yep you guys want to measure it it's this bar center your palm go ahead go measure it use your palm how close are we john so we're pretty decent it won't shut off i don't want to like try to start it and then shut it off but nothing can you put this is about the easiest excavator to steal doesn't even need a key anymore i'll just stay running all the time yeah let's [Music] all right you guys the cabelco is going into the shop i'll keep you guys updated i'm in the market for a new excavator i want something smaller i'd love to have something about 24 000 pounds i don't need anything too monstrously big i want to demo houses with it i'm looking for advice from you guys what brand what model you guys think if you guys have ran one before what do you think we should get right over here so we'll catch you on the next one you guys god bless go get em you guys god bless go get em
