Lake Speed's Final Ride: Running His 1993 NASCAR Ford Thunderbird Wide Open (In Car Cameras)

just went around I thought that be a bad gun and then it just kep on going finally got it right got there and go drive and have fun finally so we're at VIR and this is lak speed's final ride after this he's done I don't know any more than that let's find out why is this your final ride Yep this will be the final ride let's wait till we can get this out okay we'll do the here this is news to me I didn't even know that he was going to be done after this I was hoping that uh he would want to do some of the HSR events next year but guess not maybe it's his final ride but it's not job's final ride I think he's going to sell everything after this we we'll find out for sure I've never seen this I didn't know he still had it that's freaking awesome got y came legit I missed I missed a memo yesterday it was an unsaid memo just I just have to wear this every time now so this is your final ride yeah making making memories this was news to me I didn't know that until I got here yeah yeah I think that uh in reality my age and uh the amount of people it takes to take this thing to the racetrack whatever I just I think I need to let somebody else have it to have fun with with they'll have a blast with the memories most of them great what are you hoping to accomplish today what's different than the last time really just get settled down get you get KN settled down and get the car where it's driving consistent and then did his carburetor switch I'm really curious about that I think there's something there and this is the carburetor you raced with before yeah it's got a real Progressive linkage on it so you can you can ease down on the throttle and slowly it's not on you know so quickly on and off and not only that your butterflies on this one are so much bigger that when they do open the same amount I open it on them on this carburetor is considerably more than what the other one would be this carburetor only got two big blades instead of four like a normal one even if you had to S the same mechanical linkage it's going to be quicker because of the like you saying the air speed yeah the air speed going through there volume of air looks like we've already suffered some casualties oh yeah got to bleed for it right right yeah you care about it you got to bleed for it let me know if you got War pressure got War pressure morning I was say I have listened to a lot of vintage stock cars in the time since I've last heard that one and there was only a very small percentile that sound like that when you turn them on mine doesn't sound like that when I turn it on that one does sound really good it's yeah the compression on that it's like 13 13 to1 yeah that's got to be why it's 13 to one yeah having all the ta2 guys here kind of makes it feel like less of a minority yeah and there's a couple of V stock cars here too there's an old Jimmy Johnson car up there too oh there is yeah everything okay pull the hood up I smelled a bunch of oil all of a sudden on that last lap H you know me I'm like Pig pin when it comes to oil everywhere I go there's a b of oil so yeah you went out the first time and smell the oil and came back in yeah fixed some little fitting that may have been a little bit loose and all that one that's happens first one's always shed down run so that's okay so then you're going to go back out again and then after that run put the other carburetor on probably that I'm excited to see how that goes cuz I really want to see the inar footage when you can really get into the part throttle and you know get some lateral forces going on in the turns all the other footage it kind of seems like you're kind of just having to Coast through those areas and then get to the straightaway when you can lay into it I want to see you do some Wheeling inside there I didn't know you had the engine out until you called me and said you were doing the carburetor test what was the deal with that yeah so after last time we were up here had low W pressure at idle when went back and looked at some of the footage you had from in the car at the low speed Corners it was also low Idiot light was coming on took it over to Dennis pulled the pull the pan check of three or four bearings and they were all perfect and they you still see the down board gauge marks on them so it wasn't a bearing problem we went ahead and put a uh check valve on it where do you put that check valve in the system here I'll show you so where the oil feeds into the engine we have the two fittings to send oil to the B spring sprayers mhm and the one that went down to the oil pan where you put the bunk in right so what we did this time is now we have only one line that comes up here's that check valve so that only opens when the oil pressure is over 35 lb or something like that okay so once the oil pressure is over say 35 lbs it opens up then it comes up here and we got it teed so it can then run back down to run the Val to run the Piston Oilers and then it runs over here and runs the Val spring sprayers okay so we got one line so we also the leaks are the same but we're also kind of bleeding off less oil overall too suppos to have two ports coming off the oil pressure going in the engine we only have one so I guess that probably factors in too cuz it's it's got less places to all that instead of yeah I less leaks yeah yeah yeah it's going to get it's going to move more volume if it's got two dedicated lines instead of just one sharing it's not like we're running this thing 500 miles at 9,000 RPM the springs and the Pistons do need oil and we're giving them oil it's just not giving them anywhere near as much before so now our oil pressure we way overdid it that's the f h and I've noticed on a lot of the the Vintage Stock cars engines cuz I've been taking kind of visual notes on this stuff when I look at them most of them have the Piston Oiler or the the valve cover ports blocked off they don't even use them and I'm like well that makes sense the races are only like 30 minutes long so you probably don't even really need them but I I feel better back I know the B Springs like to be cool and pistons like to be cool especially these are Pistons that are really thin rings so we want to cool the Pistons we got thin rings in there so yeah you got higher margin for error if you do have an issue too might save you you got you're pulling a pin on a smaller grenade I guess but he's always beating my head risk versus reward yeah I'm taking this one all the way yeah I would do the same I think I'll even connect it on my engine too yeah I think you always take your notes the same way no cuz uh I had some here the last time so I started to go the back of the book for this one so I wouldn't get confused with which ones were which oh I was looking back at some of the stuff from when we here earlier I mean like how you format the data on the page is that always the same pretty much the same yeah pretty much the same how did you develop that system I think looking at this the the equipment that you used to get it with see how it laid out and then for years we were doing this every race you know you're sitting there doing it so I kind of had a format already from past we had forms before now I'm just using BL sheet piece of [Applause] [Music] did you think they black flaged you yeah the second time by accident he meant to Black Flag somebody else oh that was evidently coming behind me but he did Black flag's out when I came by so I thought well heck I was just in the grass while ago maybe something's going a Miss I couldn't tell anything everything was running fine driving fine huh but I tell you what this like I don't know if it's if it was all on the track he said it was all on track four people had spun out really but man I spun that thing did three Loops that's how really yeah and I wasn't even running hard I wondered that cuz I saw you coming down the end of the straight away and then it took you like five minutes right over that corner right over there third three just went around I thought I be bad gum and then it just kep on going like you on ice skating R CU I didn't have a lot of confidence in my grip but then after you run some it feels like it's yeah going to be okay I was wondering about that watching it go through there I'm like this is just awful over there it is when the BMW's passing you cuz like you have to be off the gas for that long it's like okay this is terrible I sat up by the the one flag stand over there watched about three laps I'm like this is boring I'm going to go somewhere else cuz it's just like out for a Sunday drive or something this valve is is wet I don't see any leaks under the car but I don't like the idea of this thing it's kind of seeping a little bit somewhere yeah right so not loving that so what I want to do here first I probably need to get a pair of channel locks hold this I probably need your help we're going to hold that and then adjust each of these fittings so this is a 9/16 that's too small I need a little bit bigger I don't I don't have a good quantification of what fractions are bigger than other ones I'm just like in my mind they're more arbitrary numbers that go in a certain order yeah I'm with you on that the 1016 I'm going to get 1016 too the metric system is a lot better yeah sorry it's just true for tools definitely just tools and Hardware I'm not about to get into reading kilometers but as far as you know mechanical things I'd much rather use a metric system yeah with you on that is the battery turned off battery is turned off now okay so we get a um surprise zap from that yeah alternator pole how many heat Cycles are on those tires several is that the one that those tires have been on the car every time you've used it yeah okay yeah say these are well they got 42 on them that means they're good okay are they specially matched tires so you can hold the outside I don't far as I know four tires if they're not you could always come in for some ice cream yeah I like they're marked for whe get okay I don't think he got the joke I got it yeah oh yeah Soviet Union still existed when that shelf pens oil Ultra Platinum 0 w40 in it at the recommendation of lakes speed Jr himself he had done his own testing and he recommended he said this would be perfect for that and I said really I didn't know that I thought you know race engines got to have some fancy race Lo that you have to buy you know through some other thing that's not the storm not not here so next time your oil light comes on you think of us you think of lak speed getting back in his car you think about all the videos you've watched on this channel that you've enjoyed you grab that yellow bottle and you dump it in track but I can hear you driving through that part of the track this [Music] time had had a lot better grip and more control was it fun again yeah that was was getting fun I just kept pushing my limits just a little bit more a little bit more but uh yeah it was starting to there's some places on the track that I know that in the past I can run a little deeper and I was just inching up inching up each time getting a little closer a little closer that's good that sounds really good I just got to figure out it's probably one of those stupid fittings under there it's a little bit loose again or something and we'll go back out there and find out what job really does I think it's coming from that conglomeration again Bas on you right yeah it's up here it's pulled up on the head it have to be coming up from up top play out there for getting we good enough to start getting hot yeah I was starting to get hot that was definitely the best idea was to go back to the back take the time easy then I just start picking them off one at the time you ripping through them pretty quickly yeah it didn't take long it was hard for me to Pace you almost cuz I'm like oh you know I'm waiting around wait for him to come around I'm like go there he is already I was passing everywhere on the race track about starting the essence starting Ence crowded me I had to go over the Cur pretty big you know when you shifted into third gear and you're going 100 mph little NY there one time got cuz he had already waved you know he was knew I was back there it didn't move over enough when the track went like that it's on top of the valve cover too so it's coming from the top somewhere yeah it is I'm just double cheing all these all over the front of the [Music] Val oh yep I found it already it's this one work loose again yeah I don't know if we ever tightened that one in particular but it's loose now see I burn out I did no John for there I John Forest burn out after right past the Red Barn there I just slowed down there was another car had just stop just a little bit ahead of him stopped did back look the back saw blue smoke that oak tree turn is really hard to D it's it's so slippery getting off of it still I see those guys let them going in they go straight to the all the way the outside of it and then turn and try to drive off of it straight I try to do that still it Stills that breaks back there are some other things you can do to get that fall B what would you do trailing arms the front of the trailing arms get them loll changes the geometry of everything so the car will squat huh and how does that impact what the rear end does on the rest of the track no I've never done it I just know some guys that have and they won the race oh so evidently it wasn't too detrimental huh I wonder where these ones at okay those are different oh so it's not even six piston at all no it's four piston oh wow T got to get him not to Throttle Down quite so hard right here okay go like 30 ft farther the boss man gets really sensitive about burn out I know it's a hard C I know I know I know but he he's hitting it pretty hard oh yeah he was he's trying not to spin out over there not having enough Tire temperature he's trying but was he doing maybe 30 ft more that probably would have been better right yeah I've never tried this big long pull thing before I thought maybe it' help me reach over the fence a little bit get a bit of a different angle for you guys always trying to be better here oh and he's got a raising friend too [Music] a [Music] oh I got to say two things one I need a
