What happens here

This video provides an update on two concurrent DIY vehicle projects: a 1977 Jeep J20 restoration and a one-ton axle build for a Jeep LJ. The J20 frame has already been stripped, primed, and painted, and its existing Dana 60 rear and Dana 44 front axles have received upgrades like disc brakes, locking hubs, and Bilstein shocks. The current focus is on building separate one-ton axles (14-bolt rear, Dana 60 front) for the LJ, which involves stripping, grinding, and preparing components. The video also touches on future plans for engine/transmission swaps and tool acquisitions.

Man, has it been a long time, eh? [ __ ] guys. It has been a minute. What's been going on? uh moved to Michigan about three or so years ago. I rehabbed two homes in those three years. I man I should have recorded that process because those were big jobs and I know you all would have liked to see that. Um but I didn't. I was lazy. I want to get it done. I want to get a renter in there. I have a renter in there. He's great. Um, but now it's winter time. It's winter time in Michigan. So, what else we got to do? The houses are done. About a year ago, I picked up a 1977 Jeep J20. Um, and I picked up a Dana 60 rear or Dana 60 front and a 14bolt rear. Funny story. So, I get done with the houses and I'm like, "Hey, I need a I need a new project, right?" So, [snorts] scrolling on Marketplace and I'm like, I want to put the LJ on one tons, you know? So, I'm scrolling Facebook or whatever and I found a great deal on some one tons for my LJ. Well, I contact the guy and I'm like, "Hey, I'll come down in like a month or so and I'll pick up the axles for my LJ." He's like, "All right, cool. Bet." So, fast forward a couple weeks, whatever, and I run down there and I pick him up and he's a Jeep guy or whatever. Great guy. Great. Great. But he's a he's a Jeep guy. And uh we're just messing around and and having a conversation. And I'm like, "You don't happen to have a J10 or J20, do you?" And he's like, "I do. I have a J20." And I'm like, "Well, I'm going to have to see that, you know." So, fast forward like a couple months, he reaches back out to me, sends me pictures of J20. Long story short, I bought the J20, stripped it all down, pulled it all apart, got the [snorts] frame painted. I grinded the frame down, painted it, stripped the cab, stripped the engine, and uh that's what I've been doing for the last year. November 15th will be a year with the J20. So, I'm going to pull you guys off the stand here, and I'm going to take you over there, and I'm going to show you what this J20 looks like. All right. So, right here, we have a 1977 Jeep J20. went through and grinded down the whole entire frame. Took it all down to me, pretty much bare metal. Um, used uh pore 15 for the frame, did the three-step thing, and then took two coats of Rustoleum semig gloss on top. So, cuz pore 15 is not UV protectant, so I had to protect it from the sun. I know it'll never see the sun, but if it does, then it is protected at least. Um, here I went with the lug nut 4x4 rear disc brake conversion kit. I love this kit. They're super easy guys to work with. Um, great price. I think I paid like 500 for it. Maybe maybe a little less, 450 or something. But I really really liked it. Really super super super easy install. I went through and I pour 15 the bracket. I pour 15 the hubs. Got new lug studs. I pulled the shafts out and redid all the bearings in here. Um, put a solid axle, not a solid axle, solid diff cover on. Not a fan of the solid in the middle of it, but they were cheap, guys, so forgive me. Um, did Bill Steen on the rear. Um, going to the My fingers getting a little cutesy with the fingers. Um did bilings on the front again poor 15 the whole thing. I've been working on some wood projects so she's dusty but um same as the front. The front had disc brakes when I bought it. So just new discs on the front. Went with the Warren premium locking hubs on there. Um, it has a ranch rancho 2 and a half inch lift on the front and then the rear is just the original leaf spring with an addal leaf. So, we'll step around to the front. So, it is a Dana 60 rear and a Dana 44 front. Again, matching solid diff cover right there. Warren premium hubs. Same thing. Ranchos Bilstein shocks. Here's the cab. Really, really, really decent shape, guys. Really decent shape. I got to go through and I got to fill the body here. I got some rust in here. There's some rust on the floorboard over there. Excuse the duck decoys. It is duck season. Full swing up here. But yeah, the back is great. The doors are great. Both doors are phenomenal. The hood is amazing as well. Um, over there we got the fenders. The fenders are a little rusty, but BJ's Off-Road, shout out to them. They have the patch kit for that. So, anyways, that is the 77 Jeep J20. I definitely want to start making more videos on this soon. It's been a while and it's winter time here in Michigan and I got nothing else to do. So, I'm going to get at it. I am doing a engine swap in this and a transmission swap from what it was originally. Don't hate me. I'm sorry to all you original AMC guys. I'm my bad. Once I get that engine, I'll show you guys what I [snorts] got and I'll show you the build spec and and everything like that. But while I'm waiting on the engine to be built and the transmission to be built, I have an air compressor that I'm building to do this. I'll make a video on the air compressor, too. Anyways, while I was waiting on all that, I had these axles sitting on the side of the garage. So, I said, "Hey, might as well throw together a little axle build." So, here we go. [snorts] They're not in the best condition, but I think I can definitely clean them up and make something out of them. So, 2000 2005 14bolt rear. Count the bolts. There are 14 of them. I will do the shave kit on here. Do the trusses, pull the hubs off, regeear, all the thing like that. Um, this is the front 2005 Dana 60. I just got done pulling the knuckles off, pulled the shafts out. That was a pain. But now I'm going to go through. I'm going to cut off these. Cut off this side. Strip this axle completely down to nothing. Clean it all up, paint it, and then we'll regear it. I just got done building this axle stand. Don't steal it. No, I'm just kidding. I don't care. It's 2x two tubing, quarter wall. Um, it sits about 42 43 in tall. A little tall for my liking, but it won't be too bad being able to do gears up on here, you know, get this straight. Gears welding the truss might might actually be pretty good. Um, [snorts] yeah. So, I built I built this one and then I'm like, "Oh, hold on. I want to hold two axles." So, then I built an extra stand on the bottom. So, now I can hold both axles and it rolls. I wouldn't say that it rolls the best, but you know, it it definitely rolls. So, anyways, I'm going to get this stripped down. Um, I might film a little bit of it. I might not. We'll see. So, just like that, guys. I'm going to strip down these axles here. Um, I don't really have a tripod. I lost my mount for my GoPro. So, there are tons of videos on YouTube with stripping these down. Um, so I don't think I'm going to film it. Um, [snorts] but I'm going to get at it. I'm going to cut these act cut these brackets off here and I'll let you know halfway through how it's going. Peace. Oh, the cleanup beer. You know what I mean? This has been two hours. I've been on this mouth for two hours. You know what I'm saying? Um, I feel like I am not getting anywhere with this. And all the videos that I've watched, whether it's uh JK Gear and Gadgets or Money Beard or Dirt Lifestyle or whatever, Nate and all them guys, um they always say that it it takes forever, you know. So, that's what we're doing. We're taking forever. I do have a plasma cutter. I am not using [clears throat] it because one, I don't have 220 in this garage and it's 220 and it does have a plug for 110, but it's just not it's not worth it. Um, so I'm doing it with a sawza and an angle grinder. I found that the sawzaw removed the biggest parts the quickest. Like I got a 12-in blade on there and I can just freaking make through a lot of meat real quick. So that's what I've been using and then I'm trying to finish it up. Kind of sculpt it out with uh the angle grinder. I've gone through four blades in the two hours and I've gone through four saws blades in two hours. I'm using Harbor Freight blades. Shout out to Harbor Freight. And then I'm using old Diablo that I had um laying around. So old Diablo blades for metal. And I'm using Harbor Freight angle grinder blade, the Hercules one, cuz they're on sale for like six bucks or something. So I'll show you guys what progress I had made and then what we have left yet. So here we go. So here's what the progress that I've made. This looks horrible, right? Like I got to watch some videos tonight or something and see how to go about getting this off. Um, but then this will all just be a grinding wheel and I'll I'll take more of my cutting wheel and I'll kind of get that all off there. I haven't even started this side yet. I think I'm going to go with the Barnes truss only because it's cheaper. I'm gonna go with the Barnes four-wheel drive truss. Um, I know a lot of you guys I think it's Rekch is what a lot of you guys run, but [snorts] I'm going to go with Barnes cuz this is half the price and I have a little bit more time to fab it up. So, I'm going to go with the 14bolt Barnes, the 60 Barnes. I think the 14 is out of stock for the TJ LJ swap. So, we'll have to see. And then after I get it all put on, we'll start gears, shafts, and stuff, brakes, and stuff. Um, I do need a new welder. [snorts] I'm looking at the ESOB EM 210. Um, just the MIG welder or the Miller 211, Millermatic 211. >> [snorts] >> Um, I'm tempted tempted to get the um Arc Captain. I've been watching a lot of videos is putting down some good welds, but I don't know if I trust it. So, anyways, stay tuned. I'm going to swap between this project and the J20 project as the winter progresses. Um, in two weeks we are gonna have the engine supposedly gonna have the engine for the J20. Um, I got to run down south like four or five hours to go grab it. So hopefully I can get that mounted in. I got the brackets from BJ's Off-Road >> for the uh motor mounts and then we'll get those put in there. We'll get the transmission crossmember put in there. I do have that all painted up. I might have to make some modifications to that. But um and then we're going to do a little paint booth in here and we'll get the compressor, the 60-gallon compressor built up and we'll start hitting it with a DA sander. Once we start hitting a DA sander, we can go through weld it all, patch it all, prime it all, and then these axles I'll kind of just do in the middle of uh if I'm painting or if I just don't want to work on the J20 or whatever. So stay tuned. We're gonna we're gonna do both projects. I'm going to try not to do um two projects in one video. Like if it's a if it's a one ton series, I'm going to keep the one tons separate from the J20 and if it's J20 series, I'll keep the J20, whatever, so on and so forth. Um I do like housing stuff and I do like just random projects here and there. So I'm going to film just random stuff whether it's working out in the yard or whatever. So, anyways, I'm going to finish this beer. I'm going to somewhat halfass clean up my mess, and I'll talk to you guys later. Peace.
