INDUSTRIAL H20 Cabinet Coatings. Painting HAZARDS!

this is paint live TV I'm Chrissy Idaho painter and I got a special guest with me today it's Louis hoso from surf prep and we are in California today and we just got done doing an academy or a course on uh doing finishes and what was that course about Louis um so introduction to Industrial wood Coatings essentially is kind of what I teach on so yeah so this is pretty exciting cuz I know um just on the news recently we had you know an explosion guys were painting with and spraying lacquers and there's a big explosion and these I flew all the way down here just to see these lacquer Coatings also to see your guys' Sanders the surf Sanders cuz I heard heard them bought them saw them at the PD show pdca show and they were absolutely amazing and so we were learning some of the the prepping systems prepping Bearwood doors to get them ready for these waterbased Coatings and then we were spraying with the all Apollo sprayers today so for me the liability when it comes to um using lacquers and I know I've sprayed lacquers for a lot of years and so of you abolutely and so now you've crossed over to using rener Coatings and so what is it with these Coatings that makes them safer and um and actually good enough for you to use yeah no absolutely so these are all water-based Coatings um the biggest difference is these are industrial wood coating so they're designed to dryy fast and have um you know a nice look to them and durability you know so the pre-cat lockers that you're used to using what I've used and my father and my grandfather have all used we're seeing the same durability and ease of use out of these water base and this was a door right here this was barewood right here and we took we sanded the door and then we sanded it with the guys's Sanders The Sur cup Sanders which sand cut really fast makes the sanding process really easy and then we shot two coats of the rener coating on top of that and then we put a glaze right a powder glaze a powder glaze and then and then a patina patina so is that the so is that the patina the color or um so they refer to it as the product so some people say powder glaze some people say patina some people say Breakaway glaze it's the style of and then we clear coated that and that was all done in one day absolutely and um how much time would it take to do that typically on um a cabinet door like this is it done in a day or is it so this morning uh we came in and I did the entire finishing schedule in one hour one hour yep with no interruptions just going on and what I noce we all we all sprayed did our own doors and we literally were able to do this as fast or if not faster than lacers y absolutely incredible and then the safety issue they are water-based Coatings so it cleans with water and then you don't have um all the solvent smells exactly and then I think it's you know a customer issue so oh yeah absolutely it's a liability issue liability and the the customers themselves don't like the smells of loers it's never really been that big of an issue for me but um I know um for some people they're really scared to spray lacquer based Coatings or solvent based Coatings in Interiors because of the extreme strong smell with the r coings we were spraying them in here all day not wearing respirators we did have good ventilation and stuff but I know you uh you believe in them but uh you went down to the factory which is in North Carolina and I know did a little bit of research on it and worked with the chemist and so what was that all about to discover that these products are really really good and good enough for you to use yeah absolutely so you know as a guy that's always used solvents um it was really hard for me to imagine myself coming into water base and rener had approached me about using their Coatings and uh I just flat out told them you have to prove it to me that they were and they did we uh we were in the lab for about about 3 to 4 days uh I think we ran through about 80 doors all different species all different types of Coatings after we had got done um spraying everything we took them to the lab with the chemist did adhesion tests uh we did cold check tests a 30 cycle cold check test um you know chemical resistance so yeah good so the these these uh Coatings right here they are legit in your mind and if you don't know who Lewis is you are very well known in the industry and you're known you kind of describe it to me uh what you do you're a refinisher I'm a painter and I'm trying to learn a little bit about your trade that's why I'm here and so what is your background just to give everybody a little bit of background on you so I'm a third generation refinisher slf finisher um my grandfather and my father have that's all they've done is industrial wood coating clear finishes and pigmented finishes um when I started my professional career I started doing the same but ended up kind of transitioning into uh contract finishing so I any cabinet shops Mill Work shops that needed some overflow work done or if a coding needed to meet a certain specification they would come to me for something like that so if it was anything you know they couldn't match the stain you know that's where my expertise kind of kind of comes into so you've been doing this a lot of your life yeah so you're you're definitely an expert when it comes to this and I know you've used uh lacquer based Coatings and and the big thing is is liability and i' and I've been using them for quite a few years doing kitchen cabinets we transition from water base kind of just Coatings I mean ano Coatings for trim the house of trim transitioned into lockers and kind of the smell you know um that didn't bother me as much but the liability the explosion possibilities with it there is no risk with this whatsoever right uh yeah so you're not going to run into that explosion risk it's much better for you and terms of health um from breathing in because you know lacquer is off gas for Malahide so once you spray that lacquer it starts to form from Malahide and I mean that's just not it's not great for you so that's the strong smell we're smelling is from Malahide h u well it's the solvents in the coating but as it off gases it's from alide that comes in the air yeah I know one of the things when I started messing with this stuff I started spraying it and we started sanding it so we were spraying and sanding in between every coat we sanded the wood the sanding was extremely easy to me I was very surprised so I thought you know we're going to be sanding on these things for days one thing the coating didn't raise the grain very much but your guys' Sanders and your guys' sanding pads and sponges made sanding really easy and it's kind of weird cuz it was kind of fun and um it kind of made sanding fun and I never thought Sandy could ever possibly be fun but what is it about the the pads that make them so good and the abrasives so our foam abrasives are just very unique they have the ability to Contour to the different profiles of uh of wood so if it's not just a flat panel and we're all accustomed to just the the flat Sanders with a piece of sandpaper and then hand sanding everything else so our braces are very unique since they Contour those and just make the job much easier much faster yeah I noticed how the the Sanders were extremely balanced yep and you can operate them very easily you can operate them literally with one finger so it made sanding very simple but go the sander the um I think you call it the 3x4 sander that 3x4 sander you can actually use that sander to sand in the profile right here you didn't have to do it by hand so It sped up the pro process a lot better and I guess the Braes last a lot longer than AB some of the major competitors out there absolutely because it's not a paper or film backed abrasive on the foam abrasive so the way the mineral is attached to the actual abrasive itself it doesn't come loose you know so the actual what we find um out in the real world you know doing cabinet jobs is that the foam will fail before the abrasive so um typically and this is honest we'll do an entire kitchen with probably two pads wow yeah and that that's and that's a big cost savings right there I know the some of those pads are getting pretty expensive $3 $4 a pad now so that when it it just really comes down to overhead and expenses so you've been using uh the renter Coatings now for how long now probably about a year now about a year now so do you are you going to be using any other uh Sol and based Coatings like say um the conversion varnishes or lacers anymore I don't see a reason to uh I will say that some of the solvent base if we're going for a high high gloss like 100 Sheen I will probably step back to a solvent U but for our day-to-day because that's very very rare that somebody says I want a piano finish you know um it'll be waterbased for me so then the the solvent finishes you can get get a higher Sheen it's easier to achieve a higher Sheen Sol yeah it's really cool I'm pretty excited so I know our cabinet painting process I we're we're not we won't have to change anything I mean I know we here we sprayed the cabinets laid them down I'm going to attempt to go back and use our method and um spray spraying them hanging and see if it still works so um I think it probably will so the the product dried extremely fast it dried just like the ler it was incredible this was in one day once again cuz we typically put two coats of primer two coats of top coat on that's four coats we do that in one day this was four coats right here in one day same thing but it feels like it's um harder I think it uh you were telling me this stuff even dries use terminology where crosslinker cross linking technology and yep so the biggest difference here is like with the pre-cap lacquer the amount of solids in them can float between 20 and 25% solids on these water base poly these Italian Coatings it's going to be much higher I mean they can be up to 70% solids you know once the hard but these particular single component products we can add a cross Linker to increase the dry time and stack time and even the durability yeah and so I don't know if everybody's familiar with stack time but why don't to CU I use a different uh turn for that so what is stack time so stack time if if this product which it does it can have a 4 to 6 hour stack time you know it's a very realistic stack time to where you can actually go ahead and take that rack of doors and stack them and wrap them right stack and wrap them so there you go so that's some really cool information if you didn't know that they existed water-based Coatings exist now cabinet painting and these
