What happens here
This project details the process of transforming an existing shower and tub combination by removing the old surround, modifying plumbing, installing a new tub, preparing the walls with mold-resistant drywall and waterproofing membrane, and finally applying new large format tiles using adhesive and grouting techniques. The project concludes with the installation of a modern shower door and fixtures.

(15,695 characters)so you want to do what I want to redo the shower it's a perfectly fine shower it's new dish it's okay but it can be okay well we are where we are here's what we're gonna do here we're going to remove this first and then we'll see what we can come up with blank canvas oh I wear my perfect shirt it's Wrecking day go check it out link description help support these projects if you're ever caught in a situation where you have to remove the tub here's one thing you need to know you need to get a little specialty tool like this this removes the drain once you put it in place you can just use a screwdriver and then unscrew that and that said disconnect it from the bottom drain now we gotta cut off about an inch perimeter around there should be screws that securing this fixture into the studs [Music] and workout [Applause] all right looking good see the screws are right over there so there's gonna go right around the perimeter once you disconnect them should pop out just easily well not too easy because it's uncomfortable we'll figure something out oh I have something I'll make this a lot easier I stole this chisel from my father-in-law like nine years ago from his toolbox it's dull so it makes it perfect to break stuff out like this I didn't want to ruin any of my chisels hope he doesn't watch this [Music] and just like that this thing can come out now because it's fitted there's no way for it to just pop out toilet and all that stuff so I'm just gonna break it in chunks and stuff that's a little too hard I'll use my reciprocane saw [Music] [Applause] I think it's about time I take the curtain rod off see how strong they are not very strong are they maybe a good idea not to lean on one I think I'm gonna need a new reciprocating blade oh I know what they did they glued the bottom onto a platform so we have to take that chunk by chunk we drew first blood let's bless this thing Simba Style better put these on because knowing my luck it's gonna straighten my eye [Music] [Applause] I'm exhausted working on the shower this is why I gotta rest and rehabilitate this is why we talked with sponsors of today's video sweet night their what I personally love about The Starry Night mattress is that the support is like sleeping on a cloud not too soft but also not firm like I don't like what it's too for beautiful and at the same time when you're rolling around you're not waking up your spouse as you go to the bathroom so click the link down description below and check out the sleep night Starry Night mattress now let's go finish the shower now normally I would keep this platform because we're going to need a platform for our next tub but this one has a radius up front which is not what we're looking for now that the demo is done we got a clean slate before we start repairing the drywall we first need to put the tub in because that's the sequence of events right tub then drywall goes under that lid covers all those screws so let's go buy a tub I picked up the tub and here's the hardest part of this install it's going to be to figure out all of these measurements make sure that it lines up with our new top keep in mind what we have here is a jungle gym looking thing the drainage from the top is going to the side it's there to accommodate the previous step so we have to follow the instructions and the schematics on the new tub to make sure all our measurements are picture perfect so the tub can just slide in [Music] fingers crossed not screaming up well this is the sign I need some fresh ABS cement got a fresh can of ABS cement because the ABS you don't have to use the primer that purplish stuff in quarter turn should be good [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I learned this level trick from uh a plumber I saw a video Once do and I thought that was so brilliant because if it's off a little bit it's going to be really hard to make a nice watertight seal so all right I think that's good let's go break in our tub [Music] oh my goodness it fits Victory oh no there's bound to be something I forgot these gaskets are supposed to sit on the outside of the tub not the inside geez okay foreign [Applause] [Music] and now we'll just put everything back I am gonna use some plumber Putty for this gasket there I feel like we're doing arts and crafts this is literally like Play-Doh so when we tighten this that should compress the gasket creating a water seal and excess will squeeze out and we'll just take it off all right drain secured let's secure this one overflow secured now let's get the tub so we got to make sure this tub is leveled I don't see why it wouldn't be because sitting on concrete most tubs usually have holes in here but these folks decided to come up with a different technique where these latches go underneath and then press them down and secure in place and then the rest of them have these little plastic filaments that they sit in like that and then get screwed into the studs [Music] all right this thing's not going anywhere next thing oh you know what I just noticed this is not aligned which is I mean it's fine it's a different thing I'm gonna have to get a different water faucet here but we have to move our plumbing here which means I might have to move that and I thought oh that's nice that's not I'm not gonna have to mess with it but I I guess I will but I'll throw a drywall on the sides first and leave this last All Right Drywall anywhere there's moisture laundry rooms bathrooms I don't know about kitchens probably not the kitchens uh you got to use this green stuff it's mold resistant [Music] now that the drywall's hung we got to start taping all the seams though when we use large format towel it looks good [Music] so the new water valve finally showed up I got on Amazon 160 bucks as you can see we're gonna need to cut this off put a new 2x4 that's recessed in and then um re-uh re-center it shouldn't be too hard but we all know that things are always going to go wrong [Music] the catch this almost looks like a antique artifact wow okay so this is where the spout for the tub comes in I didn't realize it would be awkward to put a regular there so this seems more perfect for the regular so I have to cut the drywall that I already put on first mistake check [Music] usually it's a piece of copper and then you slide it on there's a little Allen key to tighten it but this one you have to screw it in so the solution is we're going to use galvanized steel this is five and a half inches long by half inch screw that in and then screw this in place I just have to make sure my spacing is correct to make sure to accommodate tile and drywall but apart from that little Teflon tape we should do it I've done five Showers of my time and one thing that I keep always screwing up on is making sure my drop ear is in the right proximity to account for the rod that's going in there for the shower sprayer and the tile and the drywall every single time after Tinker with so right now I'm going the extra mile on my sixth shower make sure it's down gone perfect and that is just putting a stop cap on there because we need to go pressurize this all right the water main line is turned on I'm watching for leaks I'm probably gonna check this for the next hour make sure nothing's leaking not even a small drip sometimes these little female connectors the Teflon maybe you didn't put enough rotations in there and then I'll be comfortable putting my drywall back on mudding the rest of it as you can see already started I just need to float it because for similar to reason there's a lot of off balance parts so I want to make sure my tiling job is going to be superb okay everything is floated seems pretty even I didn't do a crazy perfect job so I'm just going to lightly say make sure I get rid of any kind of bumps grooves and then we can start applying our waterproofing membrane [Music] this part and slightly this part but mostly just this is not dry in fact I think I take too much on so it's cracking so I I gotta give it another day hopefully it'll start curing up the dam this is going to make me fall behind schedule well let's wait so the drywall finally fully cured and we can start waterproofing and the nice thing is I didn't really a full day of work waiting on this so I actually got proactive and I finished off the tile all the way up here because this used to be an arch and that sucked so I had to rip out some top piece to make sure it flows so for waterproofing we're using waterproofing membrane this is from Schluter it's kind of like the go-to everywhere uh it's just gonna go from Top all the way to the bottom and then all the seams and get overlapped by two inches to make sure that it's nice and tight by the way make sure your thinset is uh polymer enriched so there's a stronger additive to it and the trick that my towel guy taught me is that when you apply the waterproof membrane the thinset on the wall make sure the thinset is wet so that it's not too dry and it actually could have good adhesion between the membrane and the drywall let's get working folks it's a very special day because the tile just showed up the tile that we're going with is our trusted Source Bedrosian tile we're very thankful to partner with them on this this is from their color line and the color is a nomad Noir I'll link them down description below go check them out they have the best selection that it's the only place that Irene actually likes to get tile from let's get to work so the process is going to be instead of Staggering them like I've always done what we're going to do this time is a little bit different I'm actually really excited about because I've never tried this is we're actually going to line them up this way and we don't need to match any of the patterns or anything which I don't even think is even possible and we're going to space them out with my little spacers use my little cap setup to make sure they're level because with large format tile it's very easy to have a lot of big seams so this step will actually help it level so it's a Flawless install [Music] [Applause] so at the very beginning everything's looking great the start is usually the part that you need to kind of slow down and think through in terms of your tile formation because as you can see I have small pieces on the sides it can't fit an extra third long format towel so you kind of have to pre-plant so it's symmetrical so my plan is going to be here's a short one here's a short one here's a big one and then we'll continue this pattern all the way up I cannot stress enough how helpful these leveling kits are it's crazy crazy good spend the extra 60 bucks on top of your projects get that and you will not regret it [Music] foreign [Music] how this looks this came out so great um there there are mistakes and there's always mistakes I'm not going to point you out what they are and I think an average person won't catch them but when you make stuff you always know where they are but I'm proud of this and I didn't talk about these transition pieces you can buy them at your local hardware store you can get the transition pieces for your tile I personally find these metallic ones aluminum ones so much better easier to install and they create a lot Slicker look now to the grout [Music] it's at this moment that I'm so happy I went with large format towel this would be a pain in the butt if I had to do all the small little tiles my arms are killing me already [Music] we have to let this dry for the next 15 minutes I'm gonna get my bucket of water and we'll start cleaning this up [Music] wow this thing is really really starting to pop now the tile details the little lightning strikes is freaking cool now I gotta let this grab dry overnight and then tomorrow we'll start adding our shower enclosure and the one that I got is it's cool man check out this shower glass this is frameless it's beautiful I love that it has this grid pattern here it's just going to give this cool texture look here's my only problem when it's installing this thing as you can see this is a nice straight edge and here's where the problem comes and the tub here has a radius so when we put our channels in to hold our glass this doesn't create a small Gap that we need so we got to get a little squirrely here I have to Chisel in this little Notch so that sucker could sit flush in there and then we'll call kit and silicone and get rid of any imperfections but foreign oh that's perfect and there's not a lot of concealing that needs to happen after that again 100 silicone some Caulking and nobody knows what we did all right now let's put the bottom channel in first I already pre-drilled my pilot holes to make my life easier [Music] now for the top bracket there shouldn't be eyeballing getting prepared for American wings would be better [Applause] so drilling through tile you need a tile drill bit this is 3 16 perfect for the screws I got on my hammer setting uh it kind of it's the most ideal for to not overheat and also give that impact so chisels away the tile part slow and steady ones the race here well just found a fun thing the studs ends here no stud there but luckily this kit came with these anchors so I'll just have to bore these holes out a little bit more to fit the 516 anchor [Music] So the instructions say we have to put a bead of silicone 100 waterproof silicone on the inside of both of these channels that way they are secured usually I use Hardware that has little setting screws on the side but this kit for some reason didn't I'll link in the description below it's like 300 bucks which I don't know what I think about enclosures costing so much they want us to cut this rubber strip about two layers this will create the cushioning for our glass [Music] all right this is the moment bring the glass folks this thing is looking perfect I gotta drop silicone down this channel as instructions say to have more of it holding up there and then once that's done I got a silicone inside and outside bottom top all my crevices and all around the perimeter of the tub so that when water comes down it all trickles down it doesn't get into all the nooks crannies and crevices that grout perhaps cool crack over time oh [Music] I'm gonna install the rain shower head and start cleaning this puppy up and I'll show you the big reveal and turn it on for you [Music] hey thanks so much for watching the shower remodel came out incredible and if you're curious what this is behind me well that's the next big thing that we're tackling along and I am extremely anxious about it and scared be sure to check out next week and here's a video in the meantime that I think you might enjoy
