What happens here
This project guides you through constructing a raised platform and an accessible ramp, suitable for a garden shed, using wood framing and decking materials. It details preparing the site, building the structural frame, adding sheeting and roofing, installing insulation and interior panels, and applying exterior siding and trim. A simple access ramp and integrated features like heating and a water bowl (customized for a dog house in the video) are also included.

(18,026 characters)this is our 9-month-old puppy Rocky and he is the cutest thing in the world and Rocky has an awesome little hangout spot here where we have a little gated fence there he can kind of roam around chew up anything he wants and dig up anything he wants but the one thing Rocky doesn't have is a really cool dogghouse and today we're going to make sure we build them the absolute bougiest Dog Resort if you will possibly can let's get [Music] started there's a few ideas that I want few features that I want to be part of this doggy Resort thing number one I want a nice long deck uh the deck will have a dog house sitting on it but uh a section where we can have like a mini pool for him the second thing I want is I want it to be able to produce heat inside so we got heaters that are going to be built into the wall uh it's going to have to be insulated really well so he could stay cool inside of it during warm Seasons uh or warm temperatures and then warm if it's too chilly outside uh and then the second thing I want is I want a little lounging deck maybe probably on the roof that's covered in like Turf and all that cool stuff so a lot of cool ideas I might just sleep in that dogghouse whenever Arena kicks me out to the dogghouse but first things first let's build a deck get some pressure treated lumber start building out our frame and see how we want her to look [Music] yeah just my luck there's a freaking stump going right in the middle where I want this and hindsight I almost regret not going with like a 2x6 cuz it'll give me or 2 X2 a little B more room to go up but in the meantime let's start sheating this section so I think the layout here is going to be some kind of water source right here nothing too big uh a little kind of walkway area cuz I'm assuming he'd walk in through here and then here's the dogghouse itself it's 36 in wide by 36 in Long and I think just to keep it consistent my tape only worked oh it's already nicked uh make it 36 in tall right cuz I want them to be warm in there and then we'll create maybe a platform on top for him to lounge and then we'll figure out the transition I'll keep the space open cuz we'll use like TRX decking so it lasts long so build some walls make the entrance through here [Music] this is an exciting day when everything comes out to actually be square and Plum oh it's a good day this is actually a great way to start learning how to frame cuz you do it on a smaller scale then you just go to a bigger scale and just learn how to manage it all at that big scale um going to throw a top plate on to secure the sides together and then we'll be able to start working on our roof so this is one of those like design U speed bumps I'm kind of running into so I kind of wanted the top to be a little hangout spot for him but I have a deck here so why would you also want to go up there and if I had the top to be a hangout spot this is how steep this ramp would have to be which I know it's not a problem for a dog but it's also doesn't look that good so because this deck is big enough for him to Lounge on I think I'm going to scratch this whole idea of a pat on top uh especially the fact that if it's flat range is going to collect on it and then start rotting this thing to hell no matter how well I try to build it so maybe the plan will be is to make a a slanted roof like this kind of like we did on the sauna for any kind of shade will be functional with the shade I might I think that might be the look so what we'll have to do is build a tiny pony wall here and then start to connecting our hurricane ties and putting our Bird's beaks on this thing so we could slant it down if you have anyone relying on your income you need life insurance it's that simple well that is why I right there is not sitting and Plumping that up so I think once we get it completely leveled and flushed to the ground we we won't be seeing our dog house bouncing like this but while I still have this all this exposed the nail did a good job I'm also going to throw some hurricane Ties on it just to be a little bit safer and then we'll start sheeting this bad boy [Applause] [Music] up this is not going to work my router bit is not deep enough to be able to cut through this 5/8 thick OSB so well so crap so I'm going to have to figure out how to cut it with something else or rip this piece off and redo [Music] it there something missing I feel like there's it needs to come out like a little Eve kind of overhang so it looks doesn't look like a chicken coopa it actually looks like a modern build I think we're going to add an Eve I think I'm going to cut the 2x4 as a pony attachment secure it with screws only bring it out to like a little bit that way it doesn't start collapsing on me second thing that's bothering me I don't not like the orientation of this the garage door is there but our window though we check up on him is through here so I think it would be better to rotate the sucker besides we have a faucet here that'll make it easier to fill up his water bowl and all that stuff all these things all these things that just kind of come to you as you're building and then you're just kind of figuring out as you go which way to make it right there we go and there's actually a multi use here because I have this overhang here that'll be covered in shingles I could store stuff underneath here that I don't want to get wet like dog food or whatever pretty [Music] [Applause] [Music] smart that was a perfect decision absolutely happy with a 10 out of 10 would do that again all right got to throw some OSB on top that uh start wrapping the thing with waterproof membrane throw some shingles on there I'm going to leave this open just because I still got to do all the insulation and there's no way I'm going through that doggy door I'm not going to fit first things first the roof is drip edge there's two types of drip edges I'm actually using the one that I hate the most the one that I like the most has a big lip overhang on it water drips a lot better they didn't have it today at the store so I'm using this stupid stuff that I don't like another reason I don't like this stuff is because the other one you could actually put your trim under it so you could put the stuff on anytime you want but this one you have to have your trim on uh or your your your yeah your trim for your that's not the fascia is it fascia yeah for the fascia uh so I'm going to use my little space there so later on I can put that back in uh last time I tried this it didn't work out so great so hopefully this time I don't screw myself over all right I got one and one only package of shingles did not measure how much I need but I kind of did the old one box should be fine probably going to be right but we're going to find out if you don't remember on the sauna build the way to install them is you kind of have a three- tier pattern I think they call a three tab pattern uh cut the first one in third keep the two piece or the the the 2/3 and then take a full sheet so there's your pattern start with the first one give yourself a nice uh I don't know/ inch overhang on both sides it'll only make it better just because the water will drip off and half the time it probably won't even hit your drip edge and hit your four roofing nails evenly spaced throughout the thing don't go too high don't go too low and don't go too much on the edge and most importantly make sure it's sunken flat so water doesn't get seeped into it if it's one of those weird nails that go sideways might be an opportunity for a leak time to insulate the sucker the installation is going to keep it warm in the winter time or fall time whenever it's cold and uh cool in the summertime making sure this thing doesn't cook once we throw it on I'm not going to put drywall though I'll be very curious to know if water is not going to get on it we live in a typically dry climate how would drywall hold up but I'm not going to take that experiment on today uh we're going to wrap it with another alternative that I think will be much more suitable for the outdoors so my solution is using this 38 thick wain's coat uh it's got a cool pattern to it give some texture start wrapping this puppy around hit it with some brad nails and I don't think it needs anything more than that in convenient spot to be in [Applause] way [Music] crap have this like one abdominal muscle that just like cramps and seizes I don't know I can get it in in one sheet it's way too tight it's the only option is two pieces which is going to look like I wonder if I take this stud off [Music] m trying to crawl through that little tiny box takes a lot out of you going to start wrapping this thing get ready for sighting so can start looking like uh well something really cool like the plan from the beginning sucker wrapped got her wrapped on the other side now start bringing our sighing [Music] got everything trimmed out couple of things are left on the exterior is sopit and fascia 1x6 to make it nice and girthy and then fascia there but before I do that there's a small part of me that kind of wants to put in reinforcement pole here stylistically I think it'll look fine either way though this is more contemporary uh it's more for if snow ever builds up here I don't want this thing to kind of wear out over time uh I'm also not excited about putting a post there cuz he's 9 months old and uh he still likes to chew on things and he might start chewing up the post so let's try to throw some post on here hopefully it won't ruin our vibe [Music] this is going to be the exciting part of trying to fit this thing behind the wall it's too heavy to move right now so might use like a little angle drill to screw it in place it just kind of comes with territory I don't think I could build this thing somewhere else and bring it over here this thing weighs crazy crazy [Music] I'm so Jazz we're getting ready to paint I've been playing around different colors wanted to make it really unique maybe like a dark black or something like that kind of like the s that we built but then I thought well the design of it is kind of almost like 3/4 of the width cuz it's buted up against the house so I think it only makes sense to make it as an extension of the house so we're going to paint it the exact color of the house this is shogi white uh Benjamin Mo color I believe I got it a Sherin Williams so I think I'm going to paint that and then the trim around the dog entrance door will be black like the trim around my windows and then the decking well they'll have a completely different color so we'll have multiple contrast not to mention I'm going to either stain or wrap these just so we can have multiple layers on this thing let's shoot paint [Music] moving on to the deck um we need to definitely reinforce it so I cut a bunch of my pressure treated wood going to line these up as braces and then we'll see what we're going to use for decking and uh unfortunately it's going to be pricey cuz come on it's a luxury dogghouse I guess we're going to have to be pricey I also don't want it to you know deteriorate and redo it every tier so we're going to do big well my dog's officially going to have a nicer deck than most people we're using TX deck very expensive stuff 35 bucks a a board I guess hopefully we don't have to use too many boards we're going to have this track steing running this way we're going to get an apron around and you saw me create this little box out here where we're going to put this uh bucket of water in there I wanted originally to do a pool so something like this but definitely longer and unfortunately I could find something wide enough but it's way too long it's actually the entire length of the deck which is not going to work with this method you can dip his head in there drink out of it kind of like an endless supply of water if you will um it's something it's better than nothing and besides I think with these pole partitions it creates a separation of space so I hope you like it [Music] this is my unofficial deck spacer you don't see that too often on the job site keeping it consistent I didn't uh get the hardware to lock these for TX the one that's hidden because they sell them in large boxes and I didn't want to spend 60 bucks on a box of clips that I'm only going to use like 20 of them and so this is my way of saving a little bit of money on this looks so cool I'm so glad I went with brown instead of gray just cuz we get more tones to match the white here the next thing we got going on here is trying to cut out a perfect circle now I don't want this thing to sit completely flush inside here just because I want to be able to take it out clean the thing out um but that also means we kind of have to keep these handles but they're going to look terrible on the deck so I'll just have to take it out this way going to do my best way to trace this uh that it sits just a little bit above the lip and hopefully it turns out good fingers crossed that is absolutely perfect oh that's clean it's got a perfect lip just around it maybe not so much here but definitely everywhere else that pretty dang good execution I think I got to make sure there's a platform underneath so this thing doesn't sink anymore the Banus keeps going up and up what I have here is a heater they use these heaters well they can advertise them for pets uh they advertise them for like chicken coops so essentially oh that's interesting I thought they had like a almost like a solar glass but this is like a heating pad essentially that radiates down you can stand it up kind of like a TV on a nightstand you could lay it down on the floor you can hang it up on a ceiling I think the ceiling is the best one to do it that way it kind of radiates down um I truly don't know how warm although the floor would be cool but it' be uneven so I think the ceiling the ceiling or the side is probably the move unfortunately I got to crawl in there and freaking be in the most confined space good thing I'm not claustrophobic [Music] if you're ever going to do any kind of soldering and disconnect something take a picture of it so you know where all the wires line up so you don't have to be stressing afterwards learned that lesson the hard way [Music] heater is on my thermostat's right there I can control my temperature any way I want I'm going to tuck those wires away so he doesn't get into any of that kind of stuff next thing up is we have our outdoor rug I wanted to use Turf but you have to buy it by really kind of long lengths so instead for 27 bucks they sell these outdoor rugs I'm going to cut it to shape for the inside of it and staple into place and hopefully while he's still growing he's not going to start chewing on it but he's been a good boy recently so I'm not terribly worried about it that looks so freaking cool it contrasts perfectly with the white the brown tones here this is going to be a baller baller and that dog better love this thing cuz this thing is getting to be expensive all right I still got to paint my trim black here sand this up stain it and then uh get it all DED up we'll uh show Rocky's new dogghouse and we see how he likes it all right you guys ready to see this luxury dogghouse check this out [Music] all right guys this dogghouse came out absolutely incredible it's as luxurious as you can get it's heated it's insulated it's got crazy cool architecture it's got a roof it's got a built-in water source it's absolutely perfect for Rocky I didn't do a price breakdown on this but if I was to guess it was roughly around between $1,500 to $1,800 that I was spent on this it's a lot of money but it's super sturdy it's outdoor ready and the dog can enjoy it for many many years hope you guys enjoyed it in the meantime here's a video I think you might enjoy
