I Built A Futuristic Loft Bed For My Kids

What happens here

After the desk structure is complete, the entire bed frame and desk are primed and painted. The chosen paint color is 'Sea Serpent' by Sherwin Williams, a dark teal that contributes to the futuristic, almost spaceship-like atmosphere. The builder uses an airless paint sprayer for a smooth, even finish, ensuring all surfaces are thoroughly coated. This step is critical for both aesthetic appeal and protecting the MDF, preparing it for the installation of LED lighting and final touches.

Goal: Apply primer and paint to the bed frame and desk

Tools and materials

  • Drop Cloths/Masking Paper — Protecting surrounding areas from paint overspray
  • Paint — Applying the final color coat
  • Painter's Tape — Masking off areas not to be painted
  • Primer — Preparing MDF surfaces for paint adhesion
  • Respirator Mask — Protecting from paint fumes and particles

perfection. It is the next day. Everything is nice and dry. The primer is looking good. I'm actually pretty surprised to see how many runoffs that are actually blended in. There's a little concerning thing I'm going to need to sand some, but we're looking actually pretty damn good. But, the color. We got one figured out. Sea Serpent, Sherwin-Williams. Always faithful. This is the first time we're going with this color. It's modern enough. I didn't want to go black just cuz I wanted to give a little bit of I don't know, color. And uh I guess black is a shade and not a color. But, [snorts] uh Mrs. Hinch approved of this, which means your boy has got an eye for design. Let's throw it on there and see how she looks.
