I Built a $3,000 DIY Outdoor TV Console

What happens here

After final assembly, the console is prepared for finishing. A test piece of ash wood is stained with two different options: a Danish oil with light tinted walnut, and a semi-transparent walnut stain. The semi-transparent walnut is chosen as the preferred option. The entire console is then stained to achieve the desired wood tone. Following staining, a UV-resistant, water-based varnish (specifically Halcyon Varnish from TotalBoat) is applied. This varnish is chosen for its outdoor durability and UV protection. The varnish is diluted by 20% to allow for spray application using an HVLP spray gun. The application should occur in temperatures above 50°F (10°C) to ensure proper curing. The console is then allowed to cure overnight.

Goal: The fully assembled console is stained to the desired color and then protected with a UV-resistant, water-based varnish suitable for outdoor exposure.
