What happens here
This project chronicles the process of acquiring inexpensive heavy machinery, such as backhoes and loaders, from auctions, and then undertaking the necessary repairs, maintenance, and cosmetic restoration to bring them back to functional and aesthetically pleasing condition. It highlights the challenges of working with used equipment and the satisfaction of transforming it into reliable tools for various tasks, emphasizing cost-effectiveness over purchasing new machinery.

(10,121 characters)[Music] [Applause] [Music] all right guys it's the dirt monkey here well it looks like I found something that would definitely puncture a tire on one of my cars but this is not what we're gonna be talking about today well actually it is we're gonna help you guys not get when you go to an auction because when you go to an auction you're going to have three different types of equipment at the auction two of those pieces of equipment are going to be safe you're going to be okay bidding on them but one of those pieces of equipment you have to avoid like the plague we're gonna cover that today and we're going to go over a piece of equipment that I bought not too long ago and we're also going to talk a little bit on how to prep a piece of equipment for sale Frankie is out here working on this piece of equipment now and in a future video we're going to show you what we're going to be doing with this piece of equipment to maximize our profits on this before our new owner comes into place so without wasting any more time let's get into today's video all right it's always an interesting day when Frankie's in the shop no he's getting this one ready to sell but we did not buy this one on an auction we did buy a different one on an auction now I bought this John Deere 310 a tractor loader backhoe on an auction site unseen my winning bid amount was $20,000 but what I ended up paying was closer to 23 almost $24,000 before I was out the door more on that in this video and here comes my kitty a nova who's a good kitty who's a good kitty all right let's go see what's Frankie is doing in the shop hey Frankie can I turn your radio down a bit all right I got a quiz you I got a camera running just so you know but my quiz is have you ever bought something off from an auction yeah okay what I'm telling the guys is there's three different categories of equipment and an auction and tell me if I'm wrong you following us did you feed an over today Frankie no Frankie likes to feed the cat the cat will usually follow him until he fits so there's three types of equipment that I found are typically you can find at an auction the first piece of equipment is fleet equipment fleet equipment is usually relatively safe and I want to ask you if you if you're noticing the same things so a piece of fleet equipment is when a giant company decides to liquidate their assets and they don't want to go and sell each piece of equipment individually they just take it to an auction they've already made their money off from the jobs they've done with the piece of equipment and they usually typically will have a dedicated mechanic that's doing the maintenance on that equipment so in terms of relative safety I would put that at it in a number-two position this is the kind of equipment it's okay it could have problems like you see this one this is an interstate logo that's not even our company they logo it but I can tell you that interstate does a phenomenal job of keeping up with their equipment you can't say that with every piece of fleet equipment that's out there so one of the key things to look for when you're on an auction site is a logo like this so if you see a little tiny logo or where they've peeled this logo off and you can see it in the background because a lot of times that's what'll happen you'll have the shadow of the old logo there that should give you a little bit more of a warm fuzzy feeling now not a great feeling but a little bit more confidence agree or disagree okay the numbers the number one the best piece of equipment you can buy at an auction is a municipality piece of equipment this is a piece of equipment that a county state or federal agency has decided to sell they have zero interest in it they don't care what the going rate of that piece of equipment is they don't need it they don't care what it sells for they may have some kind of a minimum or something like that that they want to get out of it but it's not a requirement so with that being said the number one piece of equipment if somebody's going to an auction that they should look for would be a municipality own piece of equipment and there'll be tiny indicators that it's been municipality owned you'll be able to look over the machine and look for small little stickers like this that may they may have left behind and other indicators that will say hey this was Prior owned by a large organization it's almost like hints that you've got to look dude there's just no traction under there maybe he was sliding without having anything under him I think it's pure ice down below I think that what the lots were warm then the snow hit and then they froze organization it's almost like hints that you've got to look for that would be the number one piece of equipment that I would recommend to people are john deere 310 II was municipality owned and a lot of times what happens is those pieces of equipment have more hours idling than actually working on a job so the state-owned ones they bring them out they turn them on and then they go do whatever work they got to do then they turn them off at the end of the day and that hour clock will say eight hours but the tires may not have rotated three times during that eight hour day I will by a municipality own piece of equipment or a state-owned piece of equipment over anything else plus their maintenance on those things is superior than almost anywhere else you can go to get when you buy a piece of equipment so when a guy is looking for that one piece of equipment if you're on an auction and you know it's run owned was owned by the state for sure go for that but now there's the big warning the big red flag guys like you and me guys like you and me are the ones you don't want to buy from ok now I'm going to tell you right now we're taking care of this piece of equipment but it's getting the most TLC that it's got in the entire time that I've owned it we maintain the oil we maintain the grease but very rarely do we pull the whole machine apart like you're working on right here go through every major component on it change all the fluids filters everything that whether it needs to be done or not need to be done because this machine is usually out earning its keep and so you're gonna find that a machine like this at the big auctions will look like somebody painted it with a roller brush I mean we bought you'll have areas where it's over or not even it's not even overspray it's just paint drip around tyre casings you know pick them up here right look for sloppiness because a lot of times what happens is is they'll throw a fresh coat of paint on or a lot of times the auction house will mass paint the equipment so the equipment will show up to three weeks before the auction starts and then the seller can pay an additional fee to have the piece of equipment painted and it's usually next to nothing because they come in and they take one two maybe three hours they spray the piece of equipment down spray it like this and they're on the road I mean it's Biff BAM boom they're down the road so those are the types of pieces of equipment that they don't recommend if they've been owned by an individual I tell people to definitely do their homework on those because you don't have an option at an auction to drive it and a lot of times I've seen an equipment that somebody it drives up on to the auction site they start bidding on it somebody buys it the piece of equipment dies and they got to push it off and that person owns it you can't back out of it are you guys do me a favor and in the comments down below if you've ever bought a piece of equipment at an auction or sold one will you share your story down below because I'd love hearing stories like that and people love reading them so if you could in the comments share your experiences thanks guys plus another thing to keep into consideration is the 10 to 17 percent auctioneers fee on top of the price that you are you bid on the piece of equipment did you know about that the auctioneers so that's not included so if we bid on this we're buying a backhaul which I bought that John Deere for $20,000 I was expecting to go in and break him out a check for $20,000 but there was a 17% sellers fee over the top of that now it's going to vary from place to place to place but anywhere from 7 to 17 percent is what I've seen them Nick people depending on the purchase price of the piece of equipment nope it doesn't come out of it it gets added on top of it all right we've got to break in the action and clarify something because sometimes it's full sometimes the seller has a fee and sometimes the buyer has a fee that they pay into the auction so before you start bidding on a piece of equipment make sure you know exactly what the auction fees are and those can vary we're going to talk about that in just a minute now back to our original story and so all of a sudden a twenty thousand dollar piece of equipment cost you twenty three twenty four thousand dollars in that bargain isn't quite as much of a bargain especially when you haven't had a chance to drive it you haven't had a chance to make a connection with the person so uh now I've covered three categories from your experience I know you've gone to a lot of auctions what am I missing any categories got'em alright and then in an upcoming video we are going to walk through this machine with Frankie because he's been going through it from top to bottom for what two weeks now all right so if any of you guys want to buy my loader let hit me up in the comments down below and you could own this beautiful Dirt monkey oh it's gonna be awesome it's gonna be awesome I met the problem is I may not want to sell it when you're done alright thanks Frankie alright you guys well that's my auction video I hope this videos helped you out let me know in the comments down below if you guys could do me two favors tell your buddies about my channel and subscribe and since I'm polish and can't count very well maybe do one extra favor and check out these videos that I'm putting right down here god bless and go get them you guys
