What happens here

This project details the ambitious process of transforming a large tree stump into a functional and unique bathroom sink and vanity. It involves selecting a suitable log, extensive chainsaw carving, hand-tool refining, allowing the wood to dry and crack naturally, sealing these cracks with resin, and finally staining and sealing the entire piece to create a waterproof and visually striking fixture. The project also covers the integration of plumbing and matching existing bathroom aesthetics with live-edge walnut slabs.

[Music] know by the wind show me a piece of my past the cylinder is where we go Six Feet Under [Music] since you closed down my spine all right you guys today we're gonna be looking at what I call Frankie's masterpiece this was a project we started about a year ago and we asked the guys if they wanted us to try to turn an old log into a sink or a boulder into a sink and most of them said do the log we pulled this out of a big pile of wood that we were actually gonna be burning yeah I come out of your yard actually this came off the tree first we cut the tree down and we found the naughtiest piece we could and we let her dry for a year and there she is right there then Frankie came up with the idea of using some walnuts labs because we couldn't get a countertop in and then we had the challenge of how do we mount the faucet Frankie light turned that on so these guys know that this is a functioning and so today we're gonna take you through everything good bad and in-between this thing did have some very unique challenges didn't it Frankie yeah so we're gonna show you how this thing Lattin biggest one was the cracks that's the crack the cracks were the challenge that cracks were what threw us off but the fix summon and it still hold water yep holds water works fine drains runs works yeah functioning well what the heck did we call this a log sink Frankie stump stump stump sink all right there it is so let's be clear when I say the project took over a year to complete we didn't work on it constantly that long but last year we got a wild hair up our butt and started to cut down tree after tree after tree and had a massive pile of logs we asked you guys would you rather see us try to turn a boulder into a sink or a whole log into one and well you guys know the rest of the story from there so last year we found the perfect log section with the biggest knots and a whole bunch of branches out of it cut that to a round roughly sink height and set it to the side to let it start to air dry for about a year [Music] that's straight I don't think she's great okay so sweet leaner and see if she's straight yeah well maybe she is huh hard to say hard to say and we can only ship it to this weight right straight well the Box can always be cut but you don't read even after we polish it yeah should you be standing here put your own spy can take down another I said probably taking a right down to 36 but that's all right you can always cut it down right before week I pull your thing I throw it every two so now this is the back right but it was laying on yes Joe I'm gonna cut across and hollow that off the plane at this point is the car brought the back Frankie can you point that out one more time just to lighten everything up so we're not we're not flushed yet we're just getting it lightened up so that's gonna the whole backsides coming up right there that's all gonna be hid right up against the wall this log is kind of unique because she's pretty flat like a backside which is nice good yeah it's definitely good for us now once we get it laid enough we can set it on concrete to see how we sit yeah we might even have to smooth this you know straighten this out a little bit more but I'll do this the top belt sander okay but the bottom I if it's if it needs to be cut I'll do it with the chainsaw I wonder yeah we wonder how we're gonna mount the faucet wanted to confirm yeah just gonna have to go right through here drill we mount it right off the wall - yeah the faucet could be yeah yeah we could come up right through the wall right through the wall there sneaking right so I've seen them coming straight out those are kind of cool are you guys tell me in the comments down below did we mount the faucet through the wall or do we try to mount the faucet on top so we don't have a giant sink basin great up here is gonna be the sink so there's not much countertop space so we may end up building a countertop around the sink or off to the side a nice live-edge shelf or something to come up with it but that's Plan C plan plan a is get the stop done plan B is we're gonna do a headboard for my aunt right oh yeah and then Plan C is we'll see if what we are you plumbing well you're getting this - no we'll get this working then Oh Anna you get the whole thing working okay yeah we need water running okay through this video to work and anything you screw up we need to share okay because I'm gonna guess I don't screw up what I'm gonna guess one or five of you guys if this turns out cool may want to do it and only bet the best way to do it is to share what we the mistakes we make right how not to build a wood stump or Wood stump most stumps wood Frankie yeah okay he'll never have to build the stump see it's not even a stump no trees it's a tree it's like the crotch of a tree tree crotch okay all right we gotta lay it down where we going huh you want to put it push it down on to that all right yeah there's your backside this is where this is gonna come in bald little guy Oh a little Makita all right then that way I want to worry about going all the way to yeah okay same thing and then BOOM cut back here now I didn't even take more out once I sink in that depth you know they get out yeah Jane to work and yep well that's gonna take a little bit to carve that all oh yeah this will take you some time right now okay sorry [Music] so you started hollowing out the backside right Frankie all right and the small Makita wouldn't do it right you just couldn't get the depth out of it but I'm sure made it easy to handle right yeah yeah I mean I used it still using so you switch the bar out and that was that's the same one you use to chop the bottom off with top and bottom yeah top and bottom and so yeah literally it's just a matter of carving out the backside so we're just not trying to handle so much weight going down the steps and for the plumbing oh yeah yeah yeah and that's where we're gonna hide the plumbing so let's show these guys how you did it [Music] everything's trembling oh my shelters are opening okay so how'd the carving go Frankie all right and then I can knock down all the icebox on this hike this is the wall side you know so it don't that way we get closer to go you know bust up against the wall what's our plan stand it up then this is why I want to set it on the carpeting mr. CEO everything sits pretty right now I mean blot later anyway okay that's still gonna be insanely difficult to get down the steps well yeah I'm too off to strap it to a two-wheeled cart I'm thinking we should also measure it there it'll fit it'll fit down the steps down the steps through the door I'm good mighty big seriously that's still pretty heavy how deep you making the ball I'm gonna be a party needs and a half all the way around this know me how deep because I can get it maybe we got it then we got to drill a hole yeah for the plug at the bottom slam you drill the hole towards the back more not in the Senate which it doesn't happen to him to be anywhere actually there you gotta try to leave the thicker case we wanna mount the sink I think would you better not because our water lines would have to come through here too okay I think we're better off coming through the wall cuz we can cut that wall out you know if here and then they sneak everything up you know I'm saying I think it'll go to be good doing it that way so we'll go through the wall we'll go through the wall yeah and we'll put a wood plate we'll put a nice pump in here you know that's gonna be so tough to try to get down the steps I guess they don't really matter get rid of these things here you don't want these anymore I won't need them in the fireplace you'll be seeing great nothing said break up if we even walk it back what are we doing next well even if we walk it back here I want to get it on concrete oh alright you know then we'll get this pallet out of here oh you wanted a concrete country and we'll see I'll be able to tell unless it's leaning or whatever okay so now I think the stump itself is flat my cut might be for crooked or something though so you think the top is a tip crooked yeah otherwise it would that be all right - yeah we could just shim it right instead of trying to be I'm still high where you can come down what do you want to do that might have to shave the back you see the back this here if you look down here once we hit the wall here it's not far away from the wall we're gonna be up here okay so I might have to so we should mock up a wall palette I just put a level on here from your level up yeah we won't if you wanted so this is the knows where this would touch the wall right here that your fish is a little bit of gap here we can feel that with caulking or whatever yep yep so we want that against the wall we don't care what the bottom does as much right if we have to we'll just cut it you know I'm saying just cut this has to come off and s come off you know okay but we want it to work the Truman B so you guys can see that the top is not the top kind of angles well it all depends you know I think we could probably just shim it in place too but lay it down okay I know I were saying it right there from nothing it's in half - nothing for what check the bottle cut the bottom cut the other side yeah yeah okay okay that makes sense that the bar the size its and a half - nothing yep yep got it you know that'll level that out okay well but so now that we got we got it hollowed we'll get it leveled and then then start carving on the sink basin right make sense all right there she be she is maybe take this carve the sink out and then we'll see what we can carve out from the wood for the rest of it yeah so the white is the punky stuff well it's kind of underneath the bark its part you know it just it's not is not as hard to do this you know what I'm saying so we're gonna stay within instead at least an inch and a half our answer so long that and just kind of follow the contour of the law that's what I'm thinking on doing yeah that'll look cool yeah just that would be our sense shaped lady everything's trembling Oh carving out the actual sink basin didn't quite go the way we wanted it to Frankie's original plan was just to use a circular saw to carve out the initial design which worked okay but it didn't wouldn't go deep enough to actually do the entire sink base and so then he had to resort to some other tools including chain saws hand chisels belt Sanders and just it was just a bigger job than what he anticipated changing your body [Music] okay so we brought it in because of two things one eighth courses gotta acclimate temperature-wise but it's also got a dry for a while we had it sitting outside for over a year and that obviously didn't get all of the moisture moisture out you can actually see where she's cracking along the edge which is something we anticipated so it's not the end of the world that will actually get sealed with the resin so even though it's still in the process of checking and cracking so we're gonna let her dry for a while but one of the things the challenges that we came across was the discoloring of the wood where we lost the bark yep because it was pretty much kind of rotting right well we tore the bark off and then down then underneath the bark was soft so we're gonna take we took a piece of the wood that we cut off and you can see the discoloring here we're gonna experiment with three stains try to get as close as we can to match up just to get that to eliminate that brighter change yep so we got a little experimenting to do don't we yep all right [Music] all right two things in hindsight number one I wish we would have never stained the sink that that bright change in color by the time we would have polyed over it would have blended in better and what it just actually gave it more character didn't know that when we were doing it and I don't know I just wish we would have never colored that in and another thing is the cracking got way worse than we anticipated we expected tub but this thing cracked all the way through in multiple places and in the next video that you're gonna see you're gonna see how we dealt with that cracking how we installed the actual sink and the plumbing and how we finished off this project because there was a lot of challenges that we didn't anticipate so make sure you guys stick around look for part number two to be coming out soon where we show you the finished results and how he overcame all of the difficulties we had that's all we got for today you guys god bless go get them and I hope whatever you're working on whatever challenges you face come out good in the end catch you later
