How to stain or oil a deck professionally. How To Stain A Deck.

What happens here

When working in shaded areas of the deck, apply the Mesmer's UV Plus oil-based semi-transparent stain to a section of the boards. Unlike sunny areas, shaded portions often don't absorb oil-based stain as readily, which can lead to puddles or a tacky finish. After applying the stain, wait for approximately 5 minutes to allow for some absorption. Then, use a rag to thoroughly wipe off any excess stain that has not penetrated the wood. This step is critical to prevent the stain from remaining tacky for days or weeks. Even on older decks that have been stained multiple times, worn spots or scratches will still absorb some stain, so wiping is still necessary for areas that don't fully penetrate. The presenter notes that on a warm, sunny day (around 80 degrees Fahrenheit), even shaded areas require careful attention to wiping.

Goal: Properly stain shaded deck sections, ensuring excess oil-based stain is removed to prevent tackiness.

working in here in this section that doesn't get a whole lot of on. And I'll usually give it just about five minutes as I'm working my way down the deck. I'll give it about five minutes and then I'm going to go back over it with a rag and just wipe off any excess that hasn't penetrated in. And it's want to just take your time along the edges. These thin penetrating oilbased stains have a tendency to splatter real easy. So, you want to just go slowly along your edges and when you get out to the field out here, you can start moving a little bit quicker. And this deck has been coated probably five or six times over the year years. And so in here in the shaded area, there's so many coats of stain that no more stain will penetrate. But Scratches and areas like that will absorb some stain. Any stain, any spots that could possibly worn down from foot foot traffic will absorb the stain. This stuff in this today, it's about 80° outside. Sun's shining over here on this portion. If you let set too long without actually wiping it down, it'll get tacky really fast and you then you won't be able to wipe the excess off with a rag out here in this area. This gets full sun every day. These areas here, see that? be putting some stain on. And this stuff absorbs out here and absorbs fully into the the wood. It's only a few places like where there's hard knots in areas like that where it's not absorbing in. And those areas I'll go back and wipe off. It's absolutely critical that you use a rag to wipe those areas that are pooling and not absorbing because the deck will be extremely tacky for for weeks if you don't do that. And that's with oil based products, penetrating oil stains, water-based products will typically will just dry and they create a top coat. I just continue working along the deck and out here in the sun. You can see it's absorbs really well into the deck. But there's any areas puddling, just wipe them off just like that.
