Adding New Rope To A 24" Extension Ladder. Re-rope a ladder. How to repair a ladder.

This is Chris in Boise. In this video, we're going to show you how to re- rope a 24 ft ladder. And the ladders themselves come with a stock nylon rope. And the nylon rope doesn't last very long in the sun when they're sitting on our vans on top of the vans and they have a tendency to fray. And when you're using 24T ladders on a daily basis all day long, you can get rope burns on your hands. very uncomfortable. And we actually thread our uh ladders with a climbing style rope. It's a diamond braided poly rope. It's a lot more comfortable in your hands and won't burn your hands if you're extending the ladders up and down very fast. And we to complete this task, we got a 3/8 in nylon diamond braided poly rope. It's at um and to start off this task, the rope we're actually using, we purchased from Home Depot. uh diamond braided poly rope. And this is a three 38 inch rope and it comes in a length of 100 ft. And I got a yellow rope and a red rope here. They're both the same. I've also purchased rope clamps to clamp the rope at the bottom of the ladder. You're going to be needing and a knife or a pair of scissors actually cut the rope. So, I got a pair of scissors. You're going to need some type of match flame lighter to melt the end of the rope. the end of the rope. When you cut it, will fray. So, you want to take and melt it with a lighter. And then you're going to be needing a pair of pliers for your rope clamp. And you got a 24 ft ladder right here. And this ladder, the rope broke, so the rope's not actually on it. We're going to show you how to re- rope a ladder if it actually have a rope on it. If it has the rope already on it, you can see how it's strung. You can carefully take it off and string it the exact same way. we don't have the benefit of this. So, we're going to show you how to re- rope a ladder that doesn't have a rope on it. I'm going to start off. I got my rope here, and it's been cut. I'm going to just take and melt the ends so it doesn't fray anymore. Now it's Now that it's melted, we can begin working. I also got a another end right here that's already been melted, too. And I'll start working. You can work with either end of the rope. Make sure you have enough rope that's going to extend from the bottom rung of the ladder up through your pulley down to the other end and give you enough to actually extend the ladder. And we start this task off. I'm going to take my rope clamp here. Just open it up. And this is a 3/8 inch 1/2 inch rope clamp. And we'll show you what this rope clamp is actually used for. We're going to take and make a loop with this rope clamp like this. Put the rope and both sides of it. And it's just going to clamp down and it's going to hold a rope in a loop. Just take and use our pliers. Clamp it down. We'll show you what that loop is for. So, get it clamped down good and tight. Now, we got a a loop made right here. We're going to start off. This is the ladder itself. up the ladder and we're going to start off with the bottom rung right here. This is the bottom rung on the extending part of the ladder. I'm just going to take my rope, extend it through, get my loop, and I'm going to pull my rope all the way through. Just like that. And that rope clamp right here, that rope clamp is an easy way to hook your your rope to the bottom rung. If you don't have access to a rope clamp, you can actually just tie a knot. Just take tie several knots right here, but the rope won't come loose. And if you're good with knots, tying multiple knots, you can do it. But a rope clamp, you can see how nice it makes it look. And you have no knots. Now you're going to take this rope and you're going to feed it up in between your rungs just like this. I'm going to keep going all the way up through. I'll lay my ladder down. This climbing rope is a very soft rope. It lasts long and on top of our vans, it's very durable in the sun. But if the ladder starts to extend fast through your hands, it doesn't burn your hands nearly as bad as the stock rope that comes on the ladder. The stock rope is very cheap and wears out the sun very fast. Now, we're just going to take our pulley. You can see our pulley right here. And we're going to get the end of our rope. And this is the front side of the ladder that extends. So, we're going to go and here's the pulley here. We're going to pulley's facing me right here. Lot extends right here. We're just going to send the rope straight to the pulley. Now we got our ladder there. We've got all our excess rope. And now you just want to determine how much rope you want access. You can take this out. Make sure it function all the way up [Music] and all the way down. Once it's all the way down, you can actually take the rope itself, come to the second to the last rung right here, and you'll want to measure it. Get it you'll a little bit loose and come to get about a foot cuz we're going to make one more loop if we wanted to to actually attach the rope right there. And with our other clamp. So we're looking at a rope. We got it extended down. I'm going to go about 2 ft extra. Get my knife. Very careful. Little plastic's very hot. When you're I take and like to push it down with my hands to get it all nice and tight. The center of the rope doesn't melt melt nearly as easy. So, you got to get the flame on it just a little bit more. Now, the rope is melted on the end and it won't fray. Be careful. The end of the lighter is hot, so be careful with it. So now we can come down to the second to last rung. You can actually leave the process done right here. And that's your rope. And the ladder can be done if you don't want this rope actually hanging loose. You can actually just come down, loop it through the second to the last rung, just like this. You can take up the excess. And I'll take it. I'll get it about 6 in from there. And that's a little bit too much. So I'll just come up to right about here. I'll take my rope clamp. Get that rope tamp good and tight. Before you cut the excess, you want to take Now the rope itself doesn't hang free and just like that. [Laughter] I can see I got just a little bit excess and it swings loose when the ladder's fully unextended. And I got just a little bit too much left. And I'll just take and cut that off. Now the end of the rope looks pretty nice. And the ladder now has been re re-roed with a lot more comfortable rope for a professional painter that uses a ladder on a daily basis.
