Choose the Correct Grass Seed

The second rule is to select the appropriate grass seed for your specific area. For wide-open, sunny areas, use a "Sunny Grass Seed" mixture, as shown with a bag of Turf Champ Sunny Grass Seed. If you have a shady area, using a sunny mixture will result in grass that initially sprouts and germinates but slowly dies off over time. For shady areas, a "Shade Grass Seed" mixture, like the Turf Champ Shade Grass Seed shown, is necessary. This rule also applies to sod; if sunny sod is placed in a shady area, it will continue to grow for a few years but will slowly fade away. In such cases, overseeding the sod with a shade mixture as it fades will ensure continuous lawn coverage and the best long-term results possible.
