Apply Paint and 'Lay Out' the Wall

How To Paint In One Coat. Painting Walls In One Coat Like A Pro.
What happens here
After loading the roller, apply the paint to the wall in sections. Start by putting a loaded roller on the wall in one spot, then spread the paint to saturate the section. Once the section is well-saturated with paint, 'lay out' the paint by making consistent top-to-bottom strokes. Overlap slightly with the previous stroke to ensure full coverage. This 'laying out' step is critical for creating a uniform finish and avoiding roller marks or 'flashing' caused by inconsistent stippling or shadows. Always maintain a wet edge to avoid visible lines where wet and dry paint meet. If painting a large wall or working around furniture, you can paint the wall in two halves, rolling the top half from top to middle, and then the bottom half from bottom to middle. However, the final 'lay out' process should always be done with continuous top-to-bottom strokes for a seamless look.
Goal: Apply a uniform and smooth coat of paint to the wall, minimizing roller marks and flashing.
