What happens here
This video details the initial phase of installing a heavy-duty farm gate with an automated opener, focusing on site preparation, post-hole digging, and securing the posts with concrete. The project involves clearing an old roadbed, selecting a robust gate and a solar-powered gate opener, accurately measuring and marking post locations, and utilizing a tractor with an auger for digging. Emphasis is placed on proper post leveling and the implications for the future automated, weatherproof electrical components.

other than a guy on his farm hanging a gate and having some fun with you and sharing something fun so if you have any input or any positive influence you can give and teach us please teach us thanks a lot hey folks this is Josh Stoney Ridge farmer welcome to the farm vlog today is going to be the first day in a multi-part video series about installing a fence gate right here so we have a road that we built here last October and over the next several days we're going to be installing post heavy-duty 6x6 post and a heavy-duty gate and a gate opener from ghost controls so come along today we're gonna get a good start on this and we'll tell you a little bit about what's going on all right so first of all let's tell you a little bit about this road there used to be an old road bed that ran through here and ran all the way into town which is like a four or five mile trek through the woods to town this roads been closed for probably 60 years but there's still remnants of the road here and we went ahead and took back those remnants cleared out this area and this road kind of meanders up through the woods and goes to our waterfall area and the place where we want to build our farm state cabin and possibly the place where we'll build our permanent home all that being said what we have currently is this cable ran across here and basically it's not a physical barrier we don't need a physical barrier we just need a barrier to keep folks from coming down in here going down and doing whatever it is that people do on dead-end roads guys leave me some comments if you have any guesses of what those people might be doing down here this to me is just not secure enough now let me give you a story I had a good friend in high school they got got his neck cut from running underneath a cable that was unprotected so just a bare cable just like this so we were sure to put reflective material and we've put a piece of PVC pipe on here so that's highly visible so that nobody gets hurt we don't want anybody get hurt here on the farm so what we're gonna do on today's vlog I can't get all this into one vlog so what we're gonna do is we're going to go ahead and set our post and we'll get everything staged out here meaning we'll go ahead and get our gate we'll get our post set we'll pour some concrete we're gonna put 160 pounds of concrete per post in the ground and we'll get this all ready to rock and roll and set up now we'll talk a little bit more about the post mix and about how this stuff works as we go along cool so let's give you a little bit of Lock science on my dad's farm and on my grandparents farm there are a lot of padlocks and a lot of padlocks that you have to keep track of a key for if you forget your key guess what you're not getting in the gate well here on our farm we're using only these dial type combination type padlocks this thing is great I probably put about two drips of oil in it a year and it has lasted well I guess it's been out here since last year but we've used this on all the gates that we've had so it's been outside for four years and this is what it looks like so it's held up nicely I'll post a link down below to one of these guys it's a master lock awesome and it's supposedly very resistant to being cut even though you cut the cable a whole lot easier and you could cut that lock these are 80 pound bags of quikrete concrete that's what we use around here when I used to live out in Utah we use what they call post mix but you can't get post mix at my local Lowe's [Music] let's talk a little bit about the gate that we have so this is a Tartar farm and ranch six bar two-inch heavy-duty bull gate this heavy-duty bull gate comes with all the mounting hardware that you need right over here so it comes with a different kind of mounting hardware then you would get with a light duty gate let's get a little close-up and I'll tell you what it is so the standard gate would have just a lag bolt right here but with this gate the heavy duty gate you don't have a lag bolt you have a through bolt so we can adjust our gate and make sure that it's nice and level so one of the struggles that we're going to have to go through is being able to lift this gate to get it mounted up so if you got a light duty 16-foot gate it wouldn't be too bad for one guy to mount it up this is a heavy heavy duty gate so I'll probably have to borrow a little bit of help from the neighbor just to get it mounted up and we'll have to use the tractor also so we use a tractor to hold the gate up and we'll use the tractor to drill the holes so let's go up we'll drop the Box blade and we'll put the auger on putting the auger on the tractor is going to be the hardest thing those things are a pain in the butt to get on your tractor let's go do it totally forgot this factor I can't get the auger on the tractor because it can't get in close enough to the barn with this gate on so we'll take the gate down and drop it off first woohoo that seat was wet boy did my butt get wet I think so I swear I didn't poop my pants contact John there we're not going down the driveway better raise it up in the air so I'm gonna be careful we can't see it but there's a power line right here if I get too high I'll hit the power line with that gate all right so we got to make it through that gate in order to do that we're gonna have to go over it this is just good clean living right here I hope my neighbor doesn't come out to go to church we get a little bit hairy back it down in this poll but I think we'll be alright just take her slow and easy we'll get much slower than that all right we'll set the gate off and not the pallet there we go you guys will remember I had a lot of trouble getting this thing hooked up getting it unhooked it's gonna be no big deal when we hook this up the top link right there he's being a real pain in the butt let me twist it wouldn't adjust and it's still not twisting or adjusting so we won't need the top link to hook up to our post hole digger but it's still frustrating so what I'll have to do is unhook the two lower parts of the three-point and then leave the top link hooked up and then pull for just a little bit so I can loosen up the slack and get that thing yeah it should just slide right out or kick right out there it goes yeah if we're ever working together around the tractor and I sound funny it's cuz I have hearing protection in so if I kind of talk funny that's what's up over here is our auger which is blocked by our hey spear way to go Josh I dread this this thing's always a pain in the butt to hook up I can't wait to pull the ticks off of me tonight that'll be super fun there you go all right Twitter the problem is that I pimp this the first time I used it and it just hasn't been the same ever since I bent this end I'll show you in a minute oh yeah yeah that's your problem buddy you really need two people to do this job I'm gonna hurt my back one day pull over this come on bud here we go baby make a friend there you go garnet baby party oh ho yeah what that thing was way way way more trouble than it needed to be but got some wild turkeys up here guys we've been out wild turkeys here in the field alright now for the math and science portion of this video I have a 16-foot gate I'm putting it in an 18 to 21 foot roadway I want it centered in the roadway I have a 1 foot wide or a 12 inch auger now in order to make this work and have two to three inches of play on each post where I can adjust my gate up and down in this way in that way in order to do that I need to drill my holes 17 feet and 6 inches apart so the first thing I'll do is take my measuring tape and I'll lay it out here and I'll find the center of the road and what looks good and I'll mark the center with a little bit of paint then I'll measure out my 17 foot 6 inches drill my holes and set my post my post are 6 by 6 post the actual dimensions of the six by six is five and a half by five and a half so we'll set those post in we'll put three bags of concrete in one post hole the one that supports all the weight and we'll only put one bag of concrete in the one that just supports the gate latch cool did I lose you I hope so ok so here we are we've got our holes all marked out alright there's one hole right here is the center of the gate and right there is our next hole everything's all marked out now we're going to take this auger which is three feet and we're going to drop it all the way in so we've got 8-foot post and we want to drop them in to where there are about five feet of exposed post leftover now this doesn't have to be SuperDuper exact we're on a grade if you can't tell we're on a nice big hill right here so it doesn't have to be SuperDuper exact but we do have to think about which way we want our gate to swing let me get you back a little bit further and we'll talk about that the gate is going to have to open inward this way because there's a downhill slope if we mounted the gate and it opened this way there's a chance it could gouge into the ground as it goes up right here so what we need to know is this post on this side is going to be a little bit shorter than this post over here and they need to be pretty much at the same level so that the gate can be level this gate will need to be perfectly leveled because we're going to be installing a ghost controls opener on it and if it's not completely level it will prematurely wear out the machine so lots of thought needs to go into the we're gonna dig these holes real quick and then we're gonna get some posts in the ground and get some concrete okay so we've got our post holes dug but as you can see we're gonna have to get out Old Faithful here and use her to get all the dirt out of the hole so I've got a little bit of digging ahead of us one two beautiful post holes remember to measure twice and dig once good thing about this post hole digger situation is all the dirt down in here is nice and loose that's a nice big hole get our 6x6 here and drop them in the ground yeah daddy like that looking good let's go drop the other one in if you never picked up a 6x6 let me tell you they're a stout post that's for sure watch closely kids this is how I learned to put concrete and a fence post hole simple easy lovely get back here dusty so what you didn't see is I went between these two posts and I measured to make sure that my gate was gonna fit just right awesome so we'll go ahead and pour our three bags of sack cretan in here and get this post leveled and then we'll start measuring and adjust this post as we need to this far back and forth to get it right hold your breath nice now you can ask a million guys a million different ways to level the post I built fences for a number of years as a side job so this is how I level a post I take my level I put it on one side then I take it and I put it on the other side and I work it in and I shake that concrete in and eventually it'll all tighten up on it and be nice and level I also want to make sure that you're square with where you want your gate to so you can only twist it while the concrete is still fluffy in there okay we got our two bags in right now we'll get it fairly level and then we'll put our last bag in level level all right we've got our three bags in we'll check level this level as it can be it's awesome right on Center we'll come back with the Gator with a bucket of water and we'll pour a little bit of water in here it doesn't take much water to set ups at Crete so we'll spend about a half hour over here pouring water in it's gonna get dark on me here in a second so I got to hurry up and get this done I can always come over in the dark and pour a little water in these now I know what you're thinking don't you need to get a shovel and a wheelbarrow and mix this something pour it in wet well the answer is no the answer is the post will set up straight and level just like this just pour a little bit of water in it and we'll shake it back and forth and we'll check level again before we leave it'll be great it works just fine I built a mini offense like this so we'll get down here on this other post we'll repeat this process we'll measure our gate again it's 16 feet we'll measure back and forth until we get it just right before we put the concrete in this post then we'll go back over it pour a little water in it and then put a little dirt on top that's it set in these posts guys thanks a lot for joining me here on the farm be sure and stay tuned for the next part of this series we'll be hanging the gate and we'll also be installing the ghost controls Solar Charger controller it's gonna be pretty cool pretty fun we've already done a mighty mule and I use a mighty meal every day so I'm really curious about this ghost control setup it's supposed to be really cool it's got key pads all sorts of fun stuff so be sure you tune in to the next video and we'll get rockin with this a little bit further I'm hot I'm sweaty look at this I'm sweat is dripping off my elbow crazy thanks guys we'll see you next time pound that like button subscribe to the channel welcome to the Stoney Ridge farm [Music] Pierce we've had some ways those Denise Tony Reed oh that is american-made that is not American made everything attachments baby whoo
