How to Hang a Two Hole Mounted Picture Straight the First Time!

What happens here

First, hold the picture or calendar against the wall at the desired height. Use the tape measure to determine the vertical distance from the very top edge of the picture frame to the top of its hanging brackets. Mark the wall with a pencil at the desired top height of the picture. Next, measure the total horizontal width of the wall section where the picture will hang (e.g., between a door frame and another wall edge) and divide this measurement by two to find the exact horizontal center of the wall space. From this center point, measure outward horizontally to each side by half the distance between the two hanging brackets on the back of the picture (e.g., if the brackets are 39 inches apart, mark 19 1/2 inches to the left and 19 1/2 inches to the right of the center). Use the 4-foot level to ensure these two horizontal marks are perfectly aligned with each other and the initial top height mark. Finally, use a stud finder to verify that there are no studs directly behind the marked drilling locations, as toggle bolts are designed for hollow wall applications.

Goal: Precisely mark the wall for the picture's hanging points, ensuring proper height, centering, and level alignment.

Tools and materials

  • 4-foot Level Stabila — Ensuring the marked hanging points are perfectly horizontal
  • Pencil — Marking the hanging points and center lines on the wall
  • Stud Finder — Confirming the drilling locations are free of studs, as toggle bolts are for drywall
  • Tape Measure Milwaukee 25 ft — Measuring vertical and horizontal distances on the wall and picture
