How to Epoxy Your Garage Floor Like a Pro | Affordable Rust-Oleum Industrial Floor Coatings

crates epoxy shelf 550 here's the product right here we've got part A Part B clearly labeled so these are it's a two component product we're going to be mixing this together I've got a drill with a stir whip you want to make sure you mechanically mix this you don't want to just use a wooden stir stick you want to have a drill so this has got to be mixed you know extremely well once it's mixed it's got a 45 minute pot life so you need to begin applying the product right away you don't want to like mix this up go to lunch come back uh cuz then you're going to be outside that 45-minute window so 45-minute pot life and then it has a 5H hour dry time so one of the great things about this product is you can actually same day you can apply your primer down 5 hours later you can actually come back and do your top coat um your flake coat your um epoxy shelf 1000 so it's a great system simple system you can actually we did our filling of our saw cuts and outside perimeter you know with our self-leveling product that we're going to be scraping you can actually start 7: a in the 7:00 a.m. in the morning you can do that filling you can do the scraping you can come back do your priming after if you scraped 5 hours later do your top coat and flate coat same day and then come back 16 hours later and then do your polyaspartic on top of your flakes so you can do the system in two days so we're going to show you the mixing of part a um and Part B of poxy shell 550 and show you priming it now before we begin our mixing we want to make sure we have everything laid out ABAB however it works for you left right try to keep your mixing station the same on each coat so you know that you need to put your B in to your a or your a into your B I also recommend strongly that everything gets premixed by premixing uh we ensure that we get that right activation I think of it like a gallon of milk every time I go to drink out of it I give it a shake CU everything settles same with this so make sure to mix it um we're going to premix for about a minute roughly and then we'll mix these together for 2 minutes at that time we'll have a 45 minute pot life to get this down [Music] an important thing we did here today was we also kept the material out of the sun allowing it to stay at a workable temperature so we didn't decrease or increase our working time and our cure times 2 minutes is a mixed time what we want to make sure we're properly activated whenever we mix this up we have about a 45 minute window now until this won't be usable we're going to get 250 ft a gallon and when you're working out of a pan that can take a little bit of a time so when working by yourself I only recommend one gallon at a time uh especially if it's getting hotter out in the day another thing if I was bringing this bucket onto the floor I would want to pour it into a secondary bucket cuz there's going to be on activated material on the side of the bucket and we definitely don't want that on the floor so by pouring it out into this container anything that's activated is going to pour out and then anything that stays in there we're going to consider that as not activated [Music] [Applause] so now I'm rolling out my primer if we've got two kits you know the garage is saw cut it out even so my first kit you know should cover the first two squares so as I'm working down I can just see you know I'm definitely going to have enough to get these first two squares with my first kit you got to work quick doing our stem walls brushing our stem walls out and then rolling right along so applying this primer nothing special you just want to get a good nice even coat on it you don't have to worry about just doing any special layout or anything you I'm just rolling up and back and getting it covered 100% so I'm just using a wide chip brush too a throwaway chip brush um this is a what is this say 4in chip brush to do the brush in here don't have to use anything special just going to be thrown away so don't want to use an expensive brush at all and I'm bringing it out far enough that I don't have to risk my roller hitting the walls we are going to be putting Cove Base in here and painting the garage so I'm not concerned about getting it on the wall but if you're not painting the garage you'll pay particular attention customer doesn't have any paint for you to do touch-ups with you can end up painting their entire garage for free one other little handy tip I'll give you just realize I stepped in a little drip of epoxy or primer I usually have a drop cloth setting right outside the garage that I can step out and onto just in case I get any uh primer or epoxy on my shoes so I'm not stepping it outside the garage cuz that could be a problem [Music] this primer um the shell 550 you use acetone so if you got anything on your you know equipment or whatever that you wanted to get off you always just have acetone ready heal with you so I've just about got this squared on you can take a look at my bucket you can see I can't even load up a roller anymore so it came out exactly what I needed ready for another mix Chris yeah ready to go so we waited to mix up you know our next batch cuz you know 45 minutes that's all you got so we wouldn't have had enough time so you definitely want to always mix up one batch at a time with more time experience like if you put it on way too thick and didn't have enough could end up you know cutting into a third kit I don't want to dry naap it and string it out too far but I want it to be coated so there's nothing left and I'm right at the end to our next kit Tony's dumping in and he had a really good tip you know these are mixing buckets and those handles are really really weak so whatever you do do not trust that handle um make sure you take and hold the bottom of it I'm taking and working it down in some of these voids you want to just get them filled up um if you fill them up now you won't have to fill them up with doing your epoxy coat the flakes will cover a lot of it but still want to get that stuff filled [Music] in so one thing a concrete primer does is it identif imperfections in the concrete that we don't necessarily see before there's a pigment coat on there so as you can see right there we have a divot we'll have a product that we can patch with tomorrow before we put down the broadcast coat goes on similar to like a spackling and you can put your broadcast coat directly over that wet on wet so we don't need to let anything dry it's a two component product so there is some mixing involved but it's all done on cardboard with the stir stick just like spackling a wall we also have a big not a big hole but a hole that appeared right there a couple other pin holes right there that will fill too I actually knew that hole was there and I forgot about it could have filled it with the sealant but we'll definitely get it tomorrow won't be a problem and I'm not putting a lot of pressure when I hit that frog tape cuz I don't want to push product underneath there but the Frog tape should keep anything from bleeding underneath there and if anything actually bled underneath there when we begin doing our epoxy um I'd actually just take my tape cuz we ret tape it um I'll just bring it out just a little bit farther [Music] I don't want to you know leave this down so I'm just going to pull this up and you'll see how well my frog tape performed nothing bled underneath I got a nice sharp line my garage door shouldn't touch that primer CU I sna my line inside of the weather strip of the door
