How to build a Retaining Wall

What happens here

The final step involves building the new modular block retaining wall and seamlessly integrating it with the existing structure. The video showcases the completed wall, demonstrating how the new sections are 'stitched' into the original wall's foundation, creating a cohesive and structurally sound unit. A key observation is the color difference between the older wall and the newly installed blocks. This discrepancy is attributed to several factors: different aggregate sources used in block manufacturing over time, natural weathering of the older blocks, and whether the walls have been sealed. The older wall was sealed for salt and graffiti protection, which can also affect its appearance. While structural integration is seamless, perfect color matching is often challenging in multi-year projects due to these variables. The project concludes with the wall fully built, ready for the next phase of restoration (landscaping).

Goal: Construct the new modular retaining wall section and seamlessly connect it to the existing wall for a strong, unified structure.

Tools and materials

  • Gloves — Hand protection during block handling
  • Level — Ensuring each course of blocks is perfectly level
  • Masonry Saw Stihl — Cutting retaining wall blocks to fit, especially for integration and finishing
  • Modular Retaining Wall Blocks Versa-Lok — Constructing the new sections of the retaining wall
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting backfill behind the wall
  • Rubber Mallet — Tapping blocks into place and ensuring proper seating without damage
  • Safety Glasses — Eye protection during cutting and construction
  • Shovels — Backfilling behind the wall with drainage material

the old wall we're back at the site and the thing that I want to show you is how we've Stitch the wall together and this has been a couple year project so when I say that that means the first part of the wall was built a few years ago the last part of the wall as you know we just recently completed the thing to notice is although we're able to stitch these walls together seamlessly we are not able to match colors the reason we can never make the colors match exactly is simply because the aggregate from different types of the Season changes the color of the blocks themselves weathering is also another factor and if the wall has been sealed or unsealed the existing wall has been sealed for salt graffiti this wall May match a little closer in color after the wall gets sealed but you can see the difference in color although subtle is still a factor and something to consider when you're going to be doing a multi-year project this job is complete everything is wrapped up and done and we can move on to the next phase which is restoration
