How to Build a Air Compressor on a Budget

What happens here

Install a drain valve assembly at the bottom of the air tank to remove condensed water, which can cause rust and damage if left inside. This assembly includes a 2-inch to 1/2-inch bushing, an 8-inch length of 1/2-inch black iron pipe, a 1/2-inch 90-degree elbow, and a 1/2-inch ball valve. The ball valve allows for easy and controlled draining of accumulated water. The creator opted for this manual setup over an automatic drain to save costs, considering his expected usage frequency.

Goal: Enable regular draining of condensation from the air tank.

Tools and materials

  • 1/2-inch 90-degree Elbow — Changing the direction of the drain line
  • 1/2-inch Ball Valve — Controlling the flow of water for draining
  • 2-inch to 1/2-inch Bushing — Adapting the tank's drain port size
  • 8-inch 1/2-inch Black Iron Pipe — Extending the drain line
  • Wrench Set — Tightening fittings

See if we can get a couple pictures of the drain for you guys. So, [snorts] down here, we have a 2-in to 1/2 in bung, or not bung, bushing. My bad. And then we have a 8 in half inch Black iron two and a half inch valve works perfect. I was going to throw a auto drain on there for like 30 bucks and I still might, but I'm not going to use this compressor that much to justify having the auto drain. So, it needs a paint
