How to avoid weeds in your paver patio (part 1). #paverpatio #hardscape #diy

What happens here

The next crucial step involves laying down a geotextile fabric, often referred to as landscape fabric or filter fabric, directly over the thoroughly compacted subsoil. This fabric serves as a vital separation layer, preventing the underlying subsoil from migrating upwards and mixing with the base stone layer that will be placed on top. This separation is essential because if soil particles mix with the base stone, it can compromise the stability, drainage, and load-bearing capacity of the foundation, ultimately leading to settling and increased weed growth. The geotextile fabric also helps to evenly distribute the load from the patio across the subsoil, further enhancing the overall stability and longevity of the paver system. The fabric should completely cover the entire excavated area and extend slightly up the sides of the perimeter to fully contain the base stone.

Goal: Separate the subsoil from the base stone to prevent mixing, maintain stability, and improve drainage.

Tools and materials

  • Landscape Pins — Securing the fabric to the ground, especially at seams and along edges, to prevent shifting during subsequent steps
  • Utility Knife — Cutting the geotextile fabric to size and trimming edges
  • Geotextile Fabric Various — Creating a separation layer between the subsoil and the base stone
