Secure the Load with Proper Tie-Downs

How Not to load a Trailer. Mistakes that lead to accidents.
What happens here
Once the equipment is properly positioned on the trailer, it must be securely tied down using a 4-point tie-down system. This means securing the equipment from four different points (each corner) to the closest tie-down points on the trailer. For heavy equipment like a skid steer, use chains and chain binders. Ensure the chains are rated for the load's weight. For lighter equipment, such as mowers, specialized ratchet straps with built-in shock absorbers, like the 'ShockStrap' brand, are recommended. These straps prevent loosening due to road bumps by absorbing vibrations, unlike traditional ratchet straps that can become loose or fall off during transit.
Goal: Use appropriate tie-down methods and equipment to firmly secure the load.
Tools and materials
- Chain Binders — Tightening chains for heavy equipment
- Chains — Securing heavy equipment
- Lever Binders — Demonstrating an older, less recommended tie-down method
- Metal Bar/Cheater Bar — Used to demonstrate over-tightening of lever binders (not recommended)
- Ratchet Straps — Securing lighter equipment like mowers, with shock-absorbing properties
