hey guys it's Josh Tony rich farmer here we are today we are mowing we're mowing hey beautiful wonderful awesome hey ok so I've already been out here mowing probably eight and a half hours yesterday didn't want to take you out here with me on the first day wanted to take you out on the second day where I can get the drone to follow me around can't do that when it's real close to the woods so anyhow I want to take you today show you the field that we're mowing this is a 25 acre field the timber crew is set up on this side and if you haven't been to any of my vlogs if this is your first time look back through there's a lot of stuff going on here on the farm we have timber being cut we've got stumps being removed land being smoothed out mowing some hay building barns lots of stuff going on but today is all about mowing hey let me take you over here and show you and talk to you about the equipment that we're using you might see I think I've got a little bit of sunblock on me always wear your sunblock guys and don't forget to get those ears okay put that put that sunblock on your ears guys this is where a lot of people get skin cancer we don't want skin cancer stuff burns so the piece of equipment you're looking at here is called a hay - a new holland hay bond it's probably about 15 or 20 years old runs great they're about 30 daggone lubrication points on this thing and the biggest thing you got to do to make your equipment last is lubricated so come along here with me on the vlog and we'll talk a little bit about the hay mine we'll talk about how it's connected to the tractor we'll talk about what it does and everything to go along with mowing this hay and look back here behind me beautiful wind rows of hay this stuff will take three or four days to dry but anyway we'll talk about that so come on let's go well once again this is my disclaimer to all you farm guys to all you guys that think you know everything about tractors please leave comments leave constructive criticism leave whatever you want but if you leave negative sassy remarks they'll just be deleted so you might as well stop wasting your time every time I post a tractor video I get some sassy know-it-all farm boy that has to tell me how much he knows I want to learn from you please share what you have share your knowledge don't be an idiot and throw insults I'll just delete your comment what we have here is a new holland 474 i assume the 74 is 74 inch cut so it's about 6 foot a little bit over 6 foot cut 7 foot 6 foot something like that this thing basically has tines on it that spin it almost looks like a combine those things are spinning and these little Forks grab the grass like this and this is stuff that hasn't been explained to me and now I know and I can explain it to you which is so cool anyhow it grabs the grass and pulls it in and underneath you have a blade didn't that cool so you had the blade that cuts like this basically like a pair of hair clippers it's at 4 it's grass clippers it goes she she she she cutting that hay as the rake the rolling rake pulls it in and then it goes through a couple rollers back here on the back and they're like big rollers that roll on top of each other kind of like an old-timey washing machine and those rollers pinch that grass really hard and crimp it so let me show you the grass and show you what I'm talking about by crimping it guys mowing hay is not that exciting but you're going to learn something I promise you'll learn something today so this is what we call red top or red top fescue or wild grass or fescue whatever you want to call it I planted this entire field in Kentucky 32 fescue it's called k32 fescue this K 32 fescue has a stiff stem on it and what those rollers do is that rolls through here and snaps this stem so that the stem is broken and the moisture can escape and thus all this hay on the ground can drive faster this time of year it's really hard to get your hay to dry a heavy heavy dew settles at night you have cool evenings cool nights cool mornings and the hay doesn't want to dry very good so that extra crimping makes a big difference now people use disk mowers and the disk Mar doesn't crimp it it just cuts it off and lays it down you can watch tons of videos on those I'm sure I'll have a disk more at some point during my farm experience but right now we just have this hey bond we paid about two thousand bucks for it we bought it about two months ago and it's doing the job it's doing a great job so let's look at this and think about this the tractor is offset from the hey bind the tractor is set up to where it rides right on the edge right on the cutting edge of right on the cutting edge of where the hay is being cut and then right here the habe ein is offset it's offset so that you don't run over the hay and mash it down prior to mowing so you get a better cleaner cut and you utilize most of your grass cool the closer look at the hay mine inside here are all the mechanical moving parts and on the other side they're also mechanical moving parts right here the hey vine hooks to your pto and your tractor it's a 540 PTO on this tractor and you also have a hydraulic setting the hydraulics raise and lower the hay bond so as you're going along mowing you have to raise it up at the end of the row and do your little circle turn around and go back in and drop it back down and those scissors start cutting again guys I hope you learned something here so a lot of information but it's really really pretty we're gonna toss the drone up in the air here get a little footage and I'll talk you through what I'm thinking and what I'm doing here first things first I've got to lubricate this thing so I'm going to get on that start lubricating it then we're going to take off on the tractor we're gonna make sure our tractor is at an optimal running temperature we're not gonna hit this hay and start cutting it while it's cold so we're going to start the tractor and let it warm up while we lubricate everything I cannot stress the importance of safety here many a hand has been taken off in this thing so be smart be safe and do things like you're supposed to be sure where the mere plugs through guys be smart all right all right [Applause] alright guys so we got the mowing done check it out everything looks nice and beautiful but we had a problem I was going to get you some drunk footage but we had a super duper drunk fail you can program this DJI Mavic to fly around you so what I do must at a time when I'm driving the tractors I'll get up there program it to fly around me and then I'll take off driving and it kind of circles me and it's circling me went right into those trees over there and that's where I found it mmm-hmm I don't know I don't know how we're gonna work that but still flies the camera is anyhow we got all the mowing done in this section of the field we've got it probably another four acre section over here that we need to mow we're gonna let this sit out we're gonna let it dry for probably I don't know four days or so it's 85 degrees and windy and dry perfect weather for mowing this hay not the usual weather that we have here in North Carolina and September so it's good well let this dry out we don't want it to dry too long because it'll bleach it we wanted to dry just right now I've got a moisture meter that I'll used to read the moisture in here or you can just pick it up and shake it find out when it's too dry if you bail it too wet your bails can catch on fire because of the moisture content so if you're using one of these hay mines like this New Holland hey mine you need a tractor that has about 40 35 to 40 horsepower this is a 74 inch I do believe 7 foot cut hay mine it did a great job you got to really pay attention guys you've got to listen to your ears it's kind of like a beat go go go go go go you got to feel the baler go this is Josh Tony Ridge farmer guys thanks for watching safety first click that like button leave me some comments thanks a lot guys come on back alright during break [Music] dear sweet add some ways nice Tony Reed [Music]
